SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

Elenlond is an original free-form medieval fantasy RPG set on the continent of Soare and the Scattered Isles, which are located to the south in the Sea of Diverging Waters. The four chief nations of the western side of the world—Ashoka in northern Soare, Soto in western Soare, Morrim in eastern Soare, and Angkar, the largest of the Scattered Isles—continue to experience growth and prosperity since the fall of the Mianorite gods, although power struggles within the countries—or outside of them—continue to ensue.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

    Name: Baridus
Age: Old, Appears late twenties - early thirties
    Gender: Male
    Alignment: Lawful Evil
    Social Class: Commoner
    Occupation: Demonic Ferryman
    Race: Demon

    Weapons:
Charybdis - This pretty lady is the Captain's pride and joy. The ship was given to him within the last millennium, and resembles a Spanish Galleon. Most of the ship is not made of wood, but something like Obsidian, with details in Gneiss and Quartzite. These materials are made of buoyant, fire-resistant minerals of an extra-planar existence, able to float on seas of lava and other intense conditions.

    Physical Appearance:
By no means is he anything but an exquisite specimen. Maybe a bit frightening and intimidating at first, he's actually quite elegant in his physical form, standing at a full height of six-foot-nine from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet. His body is both muscular and angular, with broad shoulders and a 'V-shaped' torso. Flesh only covers approximately sixty percent of his body, and is a warm, glowing golden color. The other forty percent of him is made of a hard metallic substance, similar to brass in its appearance, but is as difficult to break and puncture as the rest of him. The most notable brass parts are a section of his chest, his abdomen, his shoulders (which are fashioned similarly to permanent armor mantles), and the outsides of his legs. The tops of his taloned hands are also covered in metal, and wrap around a portion of his forearms. Baridus possesses a tail with the likeness of a unicorn (like a lion's, but with longer hair and a deeper hairline up towards the spine). It tip is the same color as his hair - fading, fiery hues.

The demon's face is of a triangular shape, just as angular as the rest of him, with somewhat deep-set eyes and cheekbones. He possesses a sloping, subtly bulbed nose with a wide mouth and average lips, which peel back to reveal a grin like that of a Tigerfish - more than adequate for the tearing of muscle an sinew. His eyes are sharp and narrow, with vertically-slitted pupils set above a sea of electric yellow. The lower half of the demon's face is commonly covered by a very short beard that is somewhere between a five o'clock shadow and 'I haven't shaved in half a month.' A pair of brass horns protrude from his forehead and ascend for a little less than a foot, making the use of a hood look ridiculous and forcing the poor fiend to sleep at the foot of every bed against a wall or with a headboard. Entering establishments with low doors is also sometimes tricky. A pair of brass accents are also embedded into his cheeks, just beneath both eyes. At last, his mane reaches to about the middle of his back, and is cut in layers from three inches from his scalp, all the way to its full length. It is worn pushed back, away from his face, and worn in spikes until it grows too long towards the base of his neck, where it begins feathering out. He is careless about his own appearance, so it's either loose and spilling over his shoulders, or tied back in a low tail. The demon's mane is the color of flames, red at the roots and tipped bright yellow.

His voice is deep and expressive, harboring a very thick accent (sounds like Russian).

    Personality:
If anything is apparent within a first impression, it would be that Baridus lives in excess. Whatever he does, he likes to put himself one-hundred and ten percent behind the idea, so that he may approach with confidence and the power he needs to do what he feels is necessary. The demon finds more satisfaction in the uncivilized slices of life, so what he does in excess is usually something to be frowned upon, and instigates amplifications of his environment's magnitude of rage, laziness, arrogance, jealousy, desire, hunger, and selfishness. Baridus appreciates quietly bringing out the beasts in others, even though he, himself, will simply sit and watch as if he's above it all, or just a seasoned veteran of corruption, when in public. Alone, he's more of an animal than most.

The mortal plane and the great majority of its occupants, except the one, are mostly considered like talking cattle to the demon. Sometimes they are amusing, but their main purpose is to be fed upon. He's so stuck in his mind-set that demons are the superior manifestations, that if anything else actually does something that pleases him, he can become quite pleasantly surprised. Baridus is comfortable, thinking he knows exactly how it is everywhere, but it's far from the case. Fortunately, he's also proficient at adapting to situations, so his recoveries are usually quick.

The laws made by men and women of the moral plane are also things Baridus prefers to disregard, in all aspects but the attention it draws if one is caught openly defying their rules. After having bad experiences with flaunting evil openly, he keeps his head about him despite the constant irritation. It's much easier to move around freely when one isn't being hunted or imprisoned.

There is nothing he won't defile. There is nothing he refuses to corrupt. Baridus has no shame, only pride. Such a vile creature does not exist without charm to lure a victim. The demon has an aptitude for deep thought and intense emotions. Past the monster is a very old soul, tired, bitter, and a little bit wounded, with a passionate spirit that stubbornly refuses to expire. He plays games to pass the time, and often stares wistfully into nothingness. Loyalty is also increasingly important to him these days. He trusts very very few, if anyone anymore, and presents himself in a somewhat guarded manner.

    History:
Ages ago, a powerful demoness took the red-hot rock of an active volcano, and the firelight of the infernal planes, then molded it into a figure that suited her tastes. Baridus was born, and he was created for the same purpose he serves today: to be the captain of a transport between his plane and others near it. He served his mistress for many years before she fell and another replaced her. In the earlier years, he found himself hopping from lord to lord, avoiding the politics and simply going where he was told by greater fiends. Somehow, he managed to survive for quite some time dodging various treachery schemes and power struggles. Because he was able to vacation to outside worlds long enough to feel better about himself, he never was caught up in any unavoidable havoc. He witnessed plenty, however, and enjoyed playing the role of the informant when it was more fun to play the odds than worry about who would potentially wipe out his existence if he were ever discovered.

The greater majority of his life has gone untold, and he doesn't seem keen on sharing. At times, he will talk about a woman. He met Amriel on the western coast of Soare. After agreeing to give her safe passage to another port city for currency, she lingered with the crew. Amriel left a path of destruction in her wake, more than once, that was unable to be ignored by the demon, and he became increasingly more emotionally invested in her well-being, as opposed to treating her like a pet. An unlikely relationship blossomed between the two, and they continued to sail together for centuries. Baridus was certain she'd be with him forever. She would die, be reborn, and things would pick back up where they left off when she'd matured enough.

The demon's fortune took a turn eventually, though it wasn't always smooth sailing. The pair had once again become somewhat bored of the ocean scenery, and settled in a wild region of what is now Angkar. Before the land was united, a tribe of indigenous found him, and upon observing him, mistook him for the God of the Sun. Of course, Baridus was thrilled, and milked it for what it was worth. He played a wrathful and mysterious God, never seen but for ceremonies and rituals, where he would ominously haunt the darkness and frighten people. In exchange for the warmth and the light he "bestowed" upon the world, Baridus demanded a beautiful virgin be sacrificed to him every year by throwing her off the cliffs. When she fell, she would be collected beneath the water, and the demon would eventually eat their souls. He'd acquired a picky palette in all the luxury of being a God.

This went on for some time before the later generations of indigenous became clever, and discovered his ruse. Baridus was unthreatened, and after admitting he was not their God, he told them to continue sacrificing virgins or else he would kill them all. It took many years and many martyrs for the people to afford professional help. Baridus and Amriel were exorcised, Baridus in a much more painful manner than Amriel. He was no match for the cleric the people had acquired.

Back to the Charybdis, and Amriel began to seek revenge. Confident the cleric would still be with them to prevent his return for a while longer, he advised her against going back. Against his suggestion, she did, and died in the end. By the time Baridus had managed to get there, his passage was blocked by spells specifically fashioned to keep him out. Her body was thrown from the cliff like the sacrifices. The demon collected her in a fit of rage and grief, hinging all his hopes for her on her racial ability to reincarnate. Forlorn, Baridus dropped her off with someone who'd look after her, and drifted back off into the sea, alone, to wait.

Baridus did return to the tribe one night, and there was enough fire to light the village that it seemed like day. No survivors. Since then, he's been busy ferrying others back and forth, usually due to overdue debts people had accumulated to other demons, and sometimes for the good eats...

    Abilities:

    Simple
    • Internal Compass: It's a requirement of all Ferrymen to know where they are going, and when you're dealing with multiple planes of existence, finding which way is North is a walk in the park.
    • Summon Lesser Imp: Can summon up to six Lesser Imps at once. Lesser Imps are a hair's breath beneath sentience, able to perform remedial tasks and simple independent thought. He can also send them back once their purpose is fulfilled. Baridus cannot control six Imps for longer than three hours. Then they go insane like crack babies.
    • Soul-Eater: Because he is a demon, he must eat the souls of living things in order to maintain his health and survive. This also means he can extract them in order to devour them, but the body must first be dead to do so. A human soul is a full meal, which will last a few weeks before hunger begins to rise again.
    • Sixth Sense: Having been born of unnatural means, Baridus has a sixth sense he can use to detect magic. It hits him like a cat that senses a storm approaching. He has a vague awareness of how powerful the magic is (a choice between 'a little', 'some', and 'a lot'), but seems to understand the signature of demonic prowess the best. Objects, people, and events must be within a range of approximately thirty feet.
    • Inconspicuousness: His appearance is difficult to conceal by common means, and the demon has become somewhat paranoid in is old age. He picked this up to use as a trick to repel attention away from him. It makes him seem far more common-looking than he is, without actually altering anything physically. Of course, the spell will be broken if he provokes attention by making a scene or talking to someone.
    • Searing Claws: He may heat the tip of his talons enough to cause severe discomfort for anything with a nervous system, if contacted for longer than half a moment. Folks with any sort of heat resistance listed in their abilities will not be affected. His claws are capable of dealing first-degree burns between three and twenty seconds, second-degree burns between twenty-one and thirty-four seconds, and third-degree burns for any longer. However, anyone that lets him do this for longer than thirty seconds probably deserves to get scorched. His claws have a searing effect, and cannot light things on fire unless made of flammable material, and is held onto for longer than a moment.
    • Regeneration: Baridus heals faster than average by about half the time. Small cuts take two days before healed, etc. As long as his heart beats and his brain is mostly operational, his body is healing.
    • Bloodlust: The sight of blood is just too much to handle for some people. Instead of fainting, though, the demon will receive a rush of adrenaline, naturally implemented by his instinct as a predator. His strength and stamina increase to 3/4 more of his original might. Already a massive fellow, few people can contend with his physical strength. If the blood is his, he cares much less, and does not receive the adrenaline shot. The effects of this last until he satiates his bloodlust, until he is defeated, or until he calms down half an hour later if neither occur.

    Intermediate
    • Heat Resistance: Due to his fiery nature and the manner in which he was created, Baridus is resistant to any low-level and most intermediate-level flames sparked by spells. Natural fire doesn't seem to phase him at all, but he is still discomforted by intense worldly heat, such as dragon fire and magma.
    • Fire Breathing: It isn't magic, but rather another fascinating aspect about this demon's anatomy. Within the back of his throat are hyper-sensitive glands which will essentially spray a chemical that ignites when touched by oxygen. The chemical secretion burns slowly, more likely able to catch things on fire than a typical fireball. The range of a blast can reach a distance of eight and a half feet.
    • Fanning the Flames: Like a helpful draft to get the fire going, all simple wind element spells and abilities, as well as most intermediate, only tend to make Baridus stronger, regardless of the application. His strength will increase by an additional 3/4 of his existing strength and stamina (that's a buffer to a buffer if he succeeds in drawing the blood of another's), and his own fire-based abilities will increase in power by 30%. This effect can last between ten minutes and half an hour, depending on the power of the air spell.

    Charybdis

    Simple
    • New-fangled Machinery: Whatever technologies the Infernal Plane has been working on is in his ship. It possesses a very crude engine, and takes less of a crew to operate than other vessels of the same proportions. A willing crew is sometimes impossible to find, so it's more than necessary.
    • Cannons: Fire power! Literally, since he'll sometimes call for the cannons to be doused in oil and ignited. Charybdis possesses four cannons on either side of her Hull. Seldom does Baridus start fights on the open sea, but he has used them for defense enough to know he needs cannons.
    • Harpoons: Massive hooks tethered to chains, set on what look like enormous crossbows, litter the ship's gloomy deck. She has five total, four of which are operational, currently positioned with one in each direction. The hooks themselves are hard to come by if lost, and are quite expensive to replace.
    • Beacon: If there is need to call attention to the ship, or sometimes on crisp, serene nights hundreds of miles from land, someone can light the ship's beacon. Instead of holding a single burning torch, the Quartzite crystals along the ship's outer accents with glow with a golden-orange light. At night, it looks at a distance as if someone strung up a lot of Christmas lights.

    Intermediate
    • Hellgate: Her captain may not know the way to alternate planes of reality, himself, but Charybdis does. As a demonic ship, she must be fed the energy of souls to make the bridge, but something equivalent to three human lives will do for a return home. Typically, that would not be enough, but as a Ferryman, Baridus will also draw from the power of the other side. This also means he must rely on his reputation for doing a good job to continue passing back and forth, lest his permission to draw on such power be severed. If he ever stops being a Ferryman, he'll be stuck in Elenlond. The Hellgate leads to a sea in the other world that prevents anything not on a demonic vessel from crossing, as its waters are remarkably inhospitable.
    • Underwater Sailing: For a short period of two hours, maximum, and with the help of her captain, The Charybdis may sail beneath the surface of oceans with your run-of-the-mill salt water. The ship cannot go beyond a thousand meters from the surface, as the pressure of most seas will begin to ware on the ship.
    • Infernal Architecture: The ship is a living thing, designed by demon architects to float in some of the most inhospitable environments. She can comfortably withstand a river of lava, and survive some of the worst storms known to the world. The obsidian and minerals she appears to be made of are not materials that can be found on Elenlond. Her sails, however, are replaceable, and are done so after about every trip to the Infernal Plane - another reason why his vacations tend to last a long time.
