Welcome to Elenlond, an original medieval fantasy forum! We're always looking for new, dedicated members.

Elenlond is composed of two continents: Soare and Esiria. Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity.

But how long will that peace last?

Sophia

Slowly the sun was setting on another day. It was promising to be a beautiful night... The moon would be clear, the stars out... She would look for Morkai, a constellation she always remembered her father pointing out, there was a story to it, but that had been forgotten. However, that was not for now. She slowly drew her blade, careful to hold it so the dying light did not glimmer of it. Any time now... Any time...

She saw them round the corner. A man and a women. She knew not what they had done, or why, but someone wanted them dead. They ran down the alley, and Sophia dropped down. The woman noticed, and jumped to the floor out the way, but the man was not so lucky, he span just in time for Sophia to plunge her knife into his skull. He barely resisted, whilst the woman screamed. Like the man she offered no resistance as Sophia swung her sword, decapitating her. They evidently were not fighters. Calmly she removed the knife, which took some effort. She took a signet ring the man wore, before wiping her sword on one of their cloaks, and then leaving. She was to trade the ring and the deaths for a passage back to Angkar.

Until then however, she went back to the inn she had rented a room at. She took to the roof to watch the stars for a few hours, with a glass of red wine, a glass and a very private worry about who the people she had just killed where. Placing her sword on the table in front of her with the bottle, she simply raised her glass to the sky "To Mjor, lets hope the egotist was right, and your alive", with which she took a large sip.

Alicia was lost. She'd somehow gotten separated from Cyna, though the memory of just how was blurry for some reason... And she'd ended up wandering into Soto instead of Morrim. Well... It wasn't as if she really had any leads that would have Kinaldi better than anywhere else. Perhaps she actually WOULD find a lead here... And she had gotten a lead after all, when that Estressa woman had revealed herself...

As Alicia walked into Madrid, she wasn't entirely sure what to do next... It was nighttime, so perhaps it would be best to wait until morning before she started asking around about Estressa... Besides, she was exhausted. Some bandits had gotten the bright idea to try to kidnap her, thinking that her wings would be worth a lot of money...

Suddenly, there was a scream. It sounded rather far away, but it was unmistakably a scream of terror. Alica quickly began running in the direction it had come from, but though she was quite fast, she was rendered less so by the fact that she was rather tired right now, and it certainly didn't help that she didn't know her way around the city.

By the time Alicia reached where the scream had come from, it was too late. There was a man on the ground, with a hole in his head, and a woman who had been... Decapitated. She couldn't believe it... What had happened here? Why had these people been attacked? They certainly didn't look like they would have initiated the combat...

She shook her head. The killer was long gone, and it was too late for her to help... She wished she'd gotten there faster, if not to stop what had occurred, at least find out WHY it had... But she hadn't gotten here, and she needed to move on...

Alicia decided to go find an inn or something to rest for the night at. Soon, she found one, and rented a room. Once she headed up however, she found... She couldn't sleep. She wasn't sure why, she just... Couldn't sleep. No matter how exhausted she was... After a while, she simply decided to head out on the balcony and look up at the stars...

Slowly pouring herself another glass of wine, the Mistress of Blades let out a long sigh, relaxing back in her chair, letting a week's worth of stress, travelling and murder seep from her fingertips and into the arms of the chair, and then down, down and away from her.

She faintly heard a noise of a door creaking below her, and her right hand moved to rest by her knife without her meaning for it to. Paranoia always was a constant friend. It had to be. She entertained the idea of ignoring it briefly, of just letting herself think and feel nothing for a while, like had been longing too for a while now... But somehow, she was tempted not to. She was not sure why, it was msot unlike.

"Nice evening, isn't is?" she called down to whoever was on the balcony below. It would be nice to hear another voice, she got few chances for conversation, at least few chances for conversation which was not violent, and... Well, it would be soothing for that to change. Of course, she kept a close eye on her now spotless sword. She may have recognised herself as paranoid, but that did not mean she did not view it as good sense to be prepared.

Suddenly, Alicia heard a voice. "Nice evening, isn't it?" Wait... Was it coming from the roof? Alicia decided to fly up and see... Then facepalmed. If she'd flown when she'd heard that scream earlier, she might have made it in time! She probably would have caught the killer at the very least... But it was too late...

Alicia flapped her wings, and shot into the air. Once she got a bit above the roof, she noticed that a woman was sitting at a table, with a glass of wine and a sword set down on it... Wait, why was there a table on the roof? "Yes, it is a nice evening," Alicia said, "Though I am curious as to how you knew I was coming out, seeing as how you seem to be the only one up here, so couldn't well have been talking to anyone else at a volume that could easily be heard from where I was."

Alicia barely noticed the breeze blowing by her and her wings as she kept her attention on this woman here... However, then the sword caught her eye again. Was it just her imagination, or was it stained with blood...?

Sophia raised her eyebrows a little as the person flew to the roof. She had not expected that, wings were not the usual, but it did not exactly make any sort of difference. She grinned as the winged woman asked how about how she knew she was there.

"I heard you open your door" she replied simply "It's a nice quiet spot, you hear a lot. Thats part of the reason I had this brought here" she tapped the table "The quiet, not the hearing" although that was a part lie. She could hear everything, she knew when someone was coming, and she could be ready. She took another sip of wine "I thought I would be friendly. If you like, think nothing of it".

She looked back up at the stars, seemingly losing interest in the winged one, although her hand stayed near her hidden knife, just in case. She honestly knew not why she had called out. Maybe she was just having a few doubts over her last contract, and that was causing her to act differently. She settled on that, it sounded convincing, even if she did not usually let such things affect her.

The woman spoke again, simply saying that she'd heard Alicia come out, she heard a lot in a quiet spot like this, and said that she'd just thought she'd be friendly. Alicia chuckled, "You must have rather good hearing then." Really, Alicia never was all that loud when she moved, probably quieter than most people, though she'd never ended up trying to be stealthy before, so she couldn't have said if she'd be good at it.

The woman had looked up at the stars at this point, and Alicia did so as well. After a moment, she said, "You know... There's something about the stars, and their light, that just seems so calming. I can't explain it, but... It almost feels as if they're watching over the world." She chuckled again, "Though I'm not under the illusion that they'd do anything about anything they saw even if they actually could."

The winged one seemed to be placated by her explanation. That was good, Sophia had no desire for more blood tonight. "Reasonably, although you are quite quiet yourself. That door, less so". She looked down as the girl spoke about the stars... There was a romanticism to them, it seemed. Well, to an extent.

She took another sip of wine "I suppose your right. They are calming" she looked back up "I like remembering the stories in them. Morkai, Jotnar... All things my father taught me" she did not add about his death. In truth, these celestial things were pretty much all she remembered now, yes there were other small details, but by and large, the story of Morkai, the two headed wolf, Jotnar, the man who moved mountains and all those others... It was sad, really. That was what Sophia saw in the stars, sadness, tales from a bygone age of constellations and stories far from here that had been long forgotten. "But as you said, stars have no affect on us here, except by chance... But it is nice to look up and know that some things never change, that in this world of chaos, death and mystery" she did not mention at times she caused all three "that they are always the same".

Alicia listened as the woman spoke about the stars. Unchanging, in a world of chaos... Yes... Perhaps that was part of what was comforting. Even though sometimes it seemed like everything changed, some things truly didn't... To find just one stable thing in the world was comforting...

However, Alicia was interested in something the woman had said, "You mentioned Morkai, and Jotnar, correct? I don't believe I have heard of those, would you mind telling me the story behind them?" She found it odd that she hadn't heard of them however... She thought she knew all the constellations... Then again, perhaps the names had changed over time. She had been imprisoned for a thousand years after all... There was a lot about what the world had become now that she didn't know...

"Ahh... Not many have heard of them. They are from my parents homeland... I have been told it is far away, but, somehow, that makes no sense to me" she admitted. She took another sip of wine, and sat up.

"Morkai... If I remember correctly, was the two headed wolf who guarded the gates of death, one head watching each direction." her mind drifted back, to her father sitting her five year old self on his lap, pointing out the stars, telling her the stories. She sensed now that maybe he dumbed them down. "One day, he fell in love with a mortal woman, but, as a mortal, of course, she died. When she did, he was loathe to let her into the land of the dead, and instead, he took her upon his back, and ran, ran so fast and so far that he ended up in the sky... I never understood why the woman is not in the stars with him..." she mused, wiping her hair from her face, and looking up at the two headed wolf in the sky.

"As for Jotnar, well" she paused. Again, similar memories came back, and similar thoughts that her father may have held parts of the story back flooded into her mind "He was a warrior, who fought for a just king. When the kingdom was under attack by hordes of the dead, let out by Morkai abonding his post, the just kingdom was threatend. In the end, Morkai, Jotnar sacrificed his life to push mountains across the open gate, ending the way into the afterlife forever. As a result, the way to the afterlife is now closed, and when we die... Thats it. However, for his noble sacrifice, Jotnar was granted immortality in the heavens"

"I think the stories had been dumbed down for me, I was but a child when I heard them... That is also why I may have forgotten much of them."

She leaned back again "If you want a chair and a glass, feel free to go grab them, or if your bored and want to go back to your room, I won't be offended". Tonight was a strange night. She found herself lost in the few childhood memories she had. It was nearly painful, and the emotions that had long been repressed where... Tough to handle, to put it simply.

Alicia listened with interest as the woman explained that they were supposedly constellations that could be seen in a faraway land... Though really, Alicia wondered herself if that was the case. She thought the stars would be the same no matter where you went...

Then, the explanation on the stories of the constellations. Alicia listened intently, the stories were somewhat interesting, even if they indeed were the short versions, and as the woman had put it, a little "dumbed down" Perhaps missing parts as well, as she said that she'd forgotten a lot of it.

She then welcomed Alicia to sit down and have a drink, but also said that she wouldn't care if she left. Alicia replied, "I think I will accept your offer, thank you very much. She sat down, and did pour herself a drink, then sipped gently at the wine as she looked up at the stars.

The winged one accepted her offer of a seat and a drink, and consequently took both. Sophia just sipped at her own drink, and relaxed back into her chair. "So, we never did tell each other our names, did we?" she asked, not in a way which made it seem like a request, but merely as an observation "Our names, who we are, what we do... We are both mysteries to one another, are we not?" she smirked a little, and sipped once more at the dark red liquid in her glass, enjoying the taste and fragrence of it.

Her hand finally moved from resting hear her knife. She was close enough to her sword, and far enough from the winged one to no longer need to fear her, and to leave her hand there much longer would have drawn attention, and questions. She disguised the movement by slightly in her seat, taking a different view of the sky, the roof, the city. The city always seemed to be a different type f view, the skies showed limitless possibility, something inhuman and impossible to understand... Looking over populations, you still saw the lights, but, somehow... They did not mean anything. "I suppose we might as well share some small pleasentaries" she sighed "My name is Sophia, may I inquire as to yours?" she purposly left the name she was also known by, the Mistress of Blades, he proffession and her surname hidden. She did not need to say too much, there was no reason to.

Alicia heard the woman's voice, and looked over. She was commenting that they didn't know each other's names, nor really anything about each other... Though a mere observation, not a request. Alicia didn't respond, merely looked up at the stars again, until...

"I suppose we might as well share some small pleasantries." came her voice again, once more prompting Alicia's gaze to come back to her. "My name is Sophia, may I inquire as to yours?" Alicia responded, "My name is Alicia. Alicia Valka." She then commented, "Of course, everything besides our names is still as much a mystery as it was before, no?" Then, she took another sip of her wine, before saying, "Though it isn't as if I would have much to tell you. I'm merely a wanderer at the moment, searching for answers..."

Alicia paused, before asking, "Speaking of which, would you happen to have heard of a woman named Estressa? I believe that she would have at least some of the answers I seek." She did not elaborate on what the answers were for however. She didn't believe it to be necessary.

"The whole world is but one big mystery" Sophia remarked dryly, puring herself another glass of wine "There are a few constant though, they are one" she nodded up, although she was not sure if Alicia was even looking at her, "They are one, and human nature is the other. We all will do whatever it takes to live" she smirked a little, and thought of her Uncle "Even if it means selling out all you know and love" she added, quietly, not really intending for the winged one to hear.

Alicia then went on to ask her about some woman named Estressa. Sophia swirled her bevarage and thought for a moment "Hmm" she mused "The name does not sound familiar, and see a lot of people in my line of work" she neglected to say what that line of work was, no need really. If Alicia really wanted to guess her sword was on the table, that gave something of it away. Or at least to Sophia it did, but that may of been more of her paranoia. "Sorry, I can't think of anyone who goes by that name... It's a little unusual". She wondered what the answers that Alicia wanted were, but did not pry. This was not the kind of meeting where you asked questions of each other, it was just two strangers talking, watching the world go by over a bottle of the places most mid priced wine. It was relaxation, nothing more. If she wanted to share she would, if not, well, the Mistress of Blades couldn't care less.

The world was one big mystery? She supposed so. So few things were constant... The stars, and human nature... Though, as Alicia looked up at the stars, she realized something... The stars were the same as she remembered, all those years ago, except... One star, that she'd memorized the location of. It was gone. Perhaps... Even fewer things were constant than she realized. Mysteries... Not quite as much. There would always be things that any given person would never know... And yet, even just living, you at least find out what happens each day. Slowly, less and less things are mysteries, though it would be impossible for one person to find the answers to all of them...

Upon Alicia's question about Estressa, Sophia responded that the name wasn't familiar, though she met a lot of people in her line of work, and eventually said that no, she didn't know of anyone with that name. "I... see." was Alicia's only response.

Alicia continued to sit there, taking a sip from her glass of wine every few moments. However, once it was empty, instead of filling it again, she decided to attempt to sleep again. As she got up, and set her empty glass on the table gently, she said, "Well, it was nice talking to you. Perhaps we'll meet again, perhaps not." If nothing else happened to catch her attention, she would merely fly off the edge of the roof, and back to her room again.

After she revealed that she had no knowledge of the person that Alicia was looking for, there seemed to be silence between them. Not an awkward silence, but one of the both simply be content to sip, and watch. It was strange, and yet comforting to have company for a change, hers was a solitary lifestyle, and whilst that was not something that bothered her, it was still nice to have something different sometimes, just to make a change, to add some punctuation to the long sentance of her life. She finished her glass, but did not pour another, deciding that she had enough for one night... But there would be other nights, other evenings, other events and happenings. She had a long ship journey ahead of her tommorow, and it would keep until then, and once again it could provide a much loved gap in between life and reality.

Alicia got up, and said her goodbyes "And the same to you, if we meet again, lets hope that once again it is such a clear night as this" she stood up " But for now, I think I shall go also" she placed her glass down, and picked up her sword, holding it briefly against the moonlight to see it shine, before sheathing it. She grabbed the near empty bottle of wine and began to walk to the stairs "Goodnight Alicia, may fortune blow your way".
