| Welcome to Elenlond, an original medieval fantasy forum! We're always looking for new, dedicated members. Elenlond is composed of two continents: Soare and Esiria. Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity. But how long will that peace last? ((Do not reply to this thread.)) It was a beautiful, sunny day. Shadow, feet dangling towards the cobblestone street below, was seated on Madrid's largest fountain, found within the market square, surrounded by hundreds of people who were going about their daily business. Her emerald eyes, out of habit, scanned the square looking for people who might be recruitment-worthy, people who she could pounce upon like a feline attracted to a tiny mouse. This morning, as she eyed the crowd, she saw nobody that particularly interested her - at least, nobody who wasn't huddled in a group. The guilds had been a little skeptical when it had come to joining the cause she and Razarod had created in order to oppose the Emperor of Morrim and his continuous advance. A few of the guilds had decided to stand beside them where the Council itself wouldn't, but it wasn't enough. They needed more people and they needed more time. A quick movement within the crowds caught the shapeshifter's eye and she felt herself glancing towards it. She followed a fleet-of-foot man as he ducked and weaved through the people milling about. As he moved towards her, Shadow's brow furrowed; she felt a sudden flutter in her chest, a feeling that she had felt before and never really wanted to feel again. It only augmented as the stranger made a bee-line for her. Squirming uncomfortably, Shadow found herself folding her arms over her chest. When the man reached her, he was gasping for air. Clearly, he was a messenger. "Are you... MidnightShadow...?" he gasped, bending over to place his hands against his knees. Shadow waited until he had straightened. "Yes... But how did you find me? And how do you know it's me?" "I was told... to look for a woman who... had dark hair, green eyes, and... who is wearing far too many belts. I was told to come here... to Madrid... by someone from the... next town over..." Shadow looked him over once before she glanced towards the rest of the people. The messenger was a young man, probably a few years older than she was. He was dressed lightly, in a pair of boots, a baggy pair of pants, and a shirt that was missing its sleeves. It looked like he'd run a long way, to give her whatever message it was he had been instructed to say. "Fair enough. What is it, exactly, that you need to tell me...?" "Alex Prowers... He says you know him. He told me..." Alex glanced back as his faelits trailed behind him, the little fox-like creatuers chatting amiably amongst themselves. As he came to stand on the summit of a tall hill - there were foothills all around - he glanced about, a grin upon his face, his black hair waving in the wind. His silvery fox ears twitched as his three tails wove together. This was it... this was what he'd been searching for for so long... Motioning for the faelits to follow, he evoked the power within himself and ran down the hill. His grey-blue-green eyes widened as an excited glint entered them and he spread his arms wide, feeling the wind resisting him. Calling upon the light power that he had acquired all those moons ago, a shimmering rift formed at the bottom. Just before he reached it he saw a young man, standing no more than twenty feet away on an incline, watching the spectacle. The man's mouth was slightly open. The fallen god, realizing that he could not leave without first saying goodbye, tossed a small letter to the wind and called out: "When you see a woman with brown hair and emerald eyes, wearing more belts than she probably needs, named MidnightShadow, give her this note and tell her I love her!" A very tangible expression fo sadness passed across the boy's face, as if he was finally realizing what this would mean, but was now powerless to change the situation. Tears sprung from his eyes. As his hand touched the rift light exploded all around. He was gone. Shadow fought down the tears as they welled in her eyes. Reaching out with a shaking hand, she took the note from the messenger and nodded her thanks. She tossed him a few coins, and, as he turned to leave, he glanced back. "Do you understand what it means?" The shifter's eyes remained downcast for a moment before she replied. "Yes... He..." "It seemed like he died... There was a flash of light! I wonder if he was incinerated..." When the messenger received no reply, he left. She unfolded the small letter and read it. She managed to bite back the tears that were now threatening to spill over in full, but only just. Shadow was too cold to let the public see her sorrow. My Dear One, My Shadow, I wish that I could have told you all of this before, but there was no time, and I had no means to do it. I just wanted to tell you that I love you with all of my heart and I hope that, someday, you find someone else to fill the hole that will apear in your heart. I'll never forget you, love. Please don't forget me... I'll think about you everyday. Farewell, Dear One. Love, Alex The letter fell from her hands as she slid off of the fountain. It floated to the ground, where it was trampled by a hundred feet, forgotten and forlorn. Heedlessly, Shadow fled from the scene, shoving through people as hard as she could, knocking them aside. Angry shouts and cries echoed behind her but merely fell on deaf ears as she continued to run. Only by sheer memory and the mechanical repetition did she know where she was going; disappearing behind the inn's door, she took the stairs two at a time; when she reached her room the door slammed shut, the lock clicked, and before she knew it she was sliding down the back of the door, sobbing, tears overwhelming her to spill down her face. Putting her hands to her it as if to hide her shame, she bawled. She knew where he had gone, what had become of him... He had gone home. Home to the future. Away. Home. The words reiterated themselves. Shadow felt her right shoulder hit the floor. She cried herself to sleep. |
