Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity. But how long will that peace last? ((Please note that this thread takes place before the deciding battle for Ashoka.)) The days were growing steadily cooler and shorter. There was a bit of a chill in the air, yet not enough to keep people out of it or to freeze the river Andakilsa. The water that poured down the falls in the valley was frigid, and the stones that formed archways along the valley floor were icy to the touch. Of the few trees that called this valley home, few of them still boasted their leaves. The wind, that during the hottest of summer months is warm and inviting, was now cold and biting. Few people actually enjoyed this weather, and yet the lone woman draped in black who now wandered the heart of the valley was one of them. Sphynx had been spending far too much time cooped up in the Tower of late. It wasn’t that she minded being alone, as Andromalius was almost constantly at the palace in Kinaldi these days, but she did miss the peace one could draw from being outdoors. The Do’suul mountain range wasn’t exactly the most hospitable of places, and she had chosen to build her home in the middle of a forest for a reason. At least a couple of times a week she found herself traveling around Morrim and exploring its land. Travel was so much quicker when one had the ability to vanish from one spot and appear in a completely different one in less time that it took to take a breath; and Sphynx had such ability. During the day she had spent a great deal of time at the Temple of Life and Order; not particularly her idea of a perfect day, but better than pacing black halls…again. It’s just that Order was such a bore. When the sun started slinking low on the horizon, Sphynx decided to head low herself, and she followed the staircase leading from the Temple down into Alastrine Valley. Though the breeze flowed easily through that place, there was a certain amount of silence there as well; as if the surrounding mountains dampened all sound. It was also darker here, as the sun had moved behind the lip of the horizon, though it was still not willing to give up its light to the darkness. She found herself navigating towards the stone archways in the center of the valley. Though she didn’t mind the wind, with night falling the stones would provide some protection from it. On her way, she began to gather sticks and branches; anything that could help fuel a fire that would last throughout the night. She could always create fire with her magic, but then it would be feeding off of her energy all night long when this valley had plenty of flammable things within it. Sphynx set up camp directly underneath one of the arches, and within seconds she had a fire going, the flames eager to take purchase on the dry wood she was feeding to it. There were some parts of the world in which creating a fire overnight would be a dangerous idea, as one never knew what sorts of creatures would be attracted to the flames. Unfortunately, at least in the eyes of this dark sorceress, this didn’t seem like one of those places. She had been hoping for a little more excitement during the day’s adventure, but it seemed like today would end up being as uneventful as the twelve before it. |

He was terribly underdressed for the weather. No jacket, cloak, or any real protection from the biting wind and cold, just his fairly thin sleeveless black shirt, strangely out of place pants, gauntlets and boots. One would think he’d be the perfect candidate to catch a chill or worse, but that would never be the case. Mirix loved the cold. He loved how things, other than himself, had to struggle to survive in the cold, their prolonged suffering interested him and made him wonder why one would choose to live in such a climate. The longer nights, harsh winds, the snow, the ice; other, less devious things he liked about the weather. The mind also worked better in the cold he found, which was much to his benefit. A content sigh escaped him, a wispy cloud passing by his lips and floating up past his jaw line. Wandering this world had ended him up with some very curious encounters thus far, but few which could be of any use to his ultimate goal. What exactly that was, the demon kept a closely guarded secret, half the time even from himself. He very rarely thought about it and though the vast majority of his actions had little to nothing to do with reaching it, the few that did were well planned, well executed, and unbeknownst to anyone but himself. Time was his plaything; there was no need to rush and no need to force any hand that didn’t want to budge. Everything would be falling into place eventually and he had no need to want for sooner or for later. He smirked, giggling a little to himself while mentally stroking his own ego; simultaneously thinking that if anyone had view of his current strain of thoughts they would think him to be suffering from delusions of grandeur. And that was just how he liked it. Mirix had spent the entire day alone in his one spot in the valley doing nothing but thinking. Thinking over people, places, points and personas of interest, just about everything that had to do with what he wanted to accomplish. He thought about those he had met up until this point and what purpose they could serve him in the long run in regards to the grand scheme circling about his mind. He thought about those he needed to meet and how to get them to do what he wanted and what sorts of positions he would need to put himself in to make them more willing. Another giggle; he could be so childish with his perverse sidetracking. All of a sudden, light colored eyes swiveled to the side, the feline ears that stuck out of his head shifting as well while his pupils dilated in the darkness. He heard something; perhaps an animal, perhaps not, but something that had drawn his attention. His mind was still working however and for all intents and purposes he was merely staring into space. Just then, there was a spark and light erupted not too far away from where he was holed up. The demon licked his cool lips as the fire raged, his thoughts moving to the back of his mind now to sit undisturbed until he had another moment like the day before. Standing to his feet, he stretched his arms above his head towards the ground. Having been sitting still, upside down in the curvature of an arch had left his limbs a bit stiff, but nothing a few good moments of stretching could correct. Then, very casually he walked down the arch, beginning to whistle a tune to himself, though loud enough for the echoes to easily reach the one who was sitting by the fire. Mirix was feeling quite elated and almost giddy now, though he refrained from letting a wild grin cover his face, for now anyway. When he touched ground, he began walking briskly over towards the light of the fire, his hands shoved deep in his pant pockets. Eventually the whistling stopped, but only when the whistler was standing just within the glowing hue given off by the fire. Aside from the sound of him before, he seemed to simply appear there and he looked at the firestarter with a tilted head, the flames flickering reflected in his eyes. ”What a cute little fire you have going there.” |

The sorceress settled herself beside the fire beneath the stone archway as the sun dropped even lower. It would be gone before she knew it, and then hopefully the real fun would begin. Would the darkness bring anything interesting this evening or would she have to create all of her own fun? The necromancer never minded making things interesting for herself, but she grew tired of creating games for easy prey. The woman wasn’t one who was easily pleased, and she demanded more of a challenge. Among the crackling sound that the fire made, another noise caught her ear. The perverse giggling sound that the wind carried caught her attention faster than the fire had. The sound wasn’t one that a normal human could easily make, which piqued her interest even more. What type of creature was walking into her trap? When the whistling started up, she couldn’t help the slight curl of her lip as she anticipated the new arrival. Sphynx picked up a stick and mixed up the fire a bit as she waited, her eyes fixed on the rising sparks but her ears trained on the sounds made by her arriving guest. His appearance did not immediately draw her eye, though she could just see his feet when he stopped beside her fire without having to raise her gaze. She stirred up the flames one more time before setting the stick in the fire, running her fingers once through the flames as she pulled her hand back out of them. “I don’t believe that I have ever heard the words ‘cute’ and ‘fire’ in the same sentence before.” Her gaze finally lifted to take in his appearance; the odd pants, the short sleeves, the strange look in his eyes. An odd guest to be sure, but that was all the better for her. With a short grin that she couldn’t keep back, she beckoned him over. The smile wasn’t exactly a friendly one, but rather one that purposefully showed her teeth. “Would you care to join me by the cute, little fire, my darling, little friend?” There was plenty of room surrounding the campfire to seat them both comfortably. The woman had previously positioned herself so that her back was to one of the large stones that made up the side of the archway, and now she settled her back onto it in a more comfortable position, arranging her robe so that it draped around her. She could see the man clearly in the light of the flickering flames, and she made no attempt to hide her gaze as she studied him. His figured was lean and toned, but the muscle mass didn’t particularly concern her. There were other ways to dispose of someone than by sheer strength. She took note of the darkness surrounding his eyes, which had a slightly crazed look to them. That could be more of a problem than his size. Then there were the feline ears and beautiful claws, which told her that he was certainly not human. They merely reinforced her earlier thought that whoever had giggled was not human, and the challenge made this find all the more interesting. “You may call me Sphynx.” Her tone was that of a command, not an introduction. Sphynx was not one to ever just tell people things, she commanded them. The way that she held her chin and shoulders let people know that she wasn’t one to mess with. She was completely relaxed in this setting, sitting across the fire from a creature most likely not of this world, attempting small talk. The necromancer had perfect confidence in her ability to dispose of the creature if she wanted or, at the very least, to keep him at bay. There was still the question of what exactly he was and what he wanted, but she was certain that all would be found out in due course. |
