The night danced before her lovely in its grace as she walked along the cobbled road. That was worn smooth by the many travelers that had passed before her. In front of her along it's way side stood a tall and imposing structure. Lit by the silver moonlight, and the warmth of firelight which blazed from its windows. The Seldona Tavern, according to the sign. Marked the halfway point as Nicolet approached the structure. Opening the main door, to find a vary large common room. To her left was a spacious L shaped bar. Hosting various races and people along its gleaming brass rail. While the large hearth offered a rush of warmth that washed over her skin. Reminding her that the moon offered little in the way of warmth. At which she couldn't help the slight smile that pulled at the corner of her lips. Without looking back she stepped into the open main room looking over the various people that were at the tables before the fire. While she noticed a woman moving briskly about with a contented smile. Nicolet, found an open table near a corner of the fireplace, just near a set of stairs that lead to the upper floors of the establishment. It was here she decided to take her seat and watch. It wasn't long before the brisk friendly woman was making her way towards Nicolets table. Her platter, held high on a stable hand. She offered a warm smile. “I'm Cyane, your hostess. What can I get for you tonight?” The woman asked in a pleasant tone denoting she had a great deal of experience with travelers. “For now a tankard of ale and a bowl of stew would be nice. Lady Cyane.” Nicolet said returning the smile. For a moment Cyane looked as if she was going to laugh, as she tilted her head to the side. “Vary well.” She said smiling even more brightly as she spun on one foot and headed off to another table. Nicolet sat watching and waiting. For what she wasn't sure but she knew time offered her a vary wide array of opportunity. With which she intended to make full use of. She thought watching as another entered the vary door she had, less then an hour before. Obviously male, and well built by many standards she thought looking him over. Red hair crowned a face that wasn't scared or disfigured. Not that it ever mattered to her. Looks were only, a way of determining the first dance she thought. Noting his topaz eye's as they stood out. Scanning the crowd and room. For what ? She was curious, though content to let that sleeping dog lie. As for the rest of him, covered in tasteful though not tailored outfit of black. Her eyes were drawn to the flashes of silver. Which only allowed her to rule out certain pieces of his puzzle. Nicolet found herself leaning forward even as she realized she was openly starring at the new comer. Who's eye's had now found her in the corner. Shoot she thought even as she tried leaning back, to act as if nothing had happened. Almost tipping the chair. Damn! She thought again. The last thing she needed was to be off balance! That just wasn't her speed at all. |

Valerian had pulled himself together, finally. It had taken him two weeks, but after the honeyed words and poisoned riddles had been whispered into his ear, it was actually quite amazing that he was in fact up and about in the mere space of a week. No longer did he break down every hour, withdrawing into that dark space filled with numbing mist. He could now at least affect a mask of nonchalance, a false pretense that everything was alright, that he hadn't killed his best friend, hadn't murdered his wife, hadn't been transported to an alien world where he was familiar with nothing and no one. It couldn't last, obviously, but for the moment, he could at least pretend. In those two weeks, he'd traveled, wanting desperately to get away from the place where he'd fallen to pieces and revealed the bitter truth. The more distance he put between himself and that place, the easier it would be to forget...right? No. He couldn't forget. Not only was the image too terrible for him to ever forget, it would have been an insult to want to erase the memory from his mind. He'd sinned terribly, and carrying the image was his punishment, his form of paying penance, every second of every day. The moon hung high in the sky, the only visible light in an otherwise dark night. The darkness suited his mood, and as he walked, heavy footsteps against hard cobbles, he couldn't help but wish that he could become one with that darkness, fade away completely until he himself was nothing more than an element of the night. But he was destined to be here, alive, whole, searching for things he didn't know if he would ever fine. Weariness gnawed at his bones, and the sight of a building ahead - tall, imposing, but inviting - gave him pause. This must be a sign. After travelling for hours and finding nothing more than dilapidated, abandoned huts, to have a tavern appear magically before him seemed like a godsend. He would stay the night here then, throw down his gold in return for a room and perhaps a bath, and maybe even a bit of food. Though...his coin was different from the rest here...but gold was gold everywhere, yes? Making up his mind, he sped up his pace, reaching the entrance in a matter of minutes. The rush of heat and noise that greeted him upon entry caused him to wince momentarily, but his senses quickly adjusted to the higher levels of activity. He paused at the entrance, unsure of where to go first - food or bed? - but before he could reach a decision on that matter, he felt eyes upon his person. Amber eyes flickered to the left, drawn to a figure in the corner. A woman. She noticed him watching her watch him, and gave a start. Hmm. Quickly rearranging his order of priorities, Valerian turned away from the bar, heading towards the stranger who'd been eying him instead. He ought not to have made such a big deal out of it, but he'd been on edge constantly, and if this person was planning on attacking him in any way, he wanted to settle that score immediately. Drawing close to the table, he paused a foot away and placed a hand on his hip, eying her. "Any particular reason you were watching me?" ((ooc: Sorry it kinda sucks. =/ My writing muse is completely tapped out.)) |

"Damn." She whispered under her breath, as she adjusted herself on the chair. Even as she noticed him walking in her direction. * Damn * , she thought again. Nicolet knew she was tired. Which was obvious, by the slight mistakes she'd made in just the few brief moments he'd walked in the door. "Any particular reason you were watching me?" He asked his voice smooth and even, if a bit weary sounding even to her own ears. He was within a foot of her table, his voice low. Most likely so as not to disturb the other customers. She noted, that many of them hadn't noticed him enter. Or if they had they didn't really care. Out side of the jovial brunet hostess, who'd sized him up in a matter of seconds. Nicolet also knew that like a proper hostess, Cyane was simply waiting for him to get settled in. "Do you mean, out side the fact that you appear to be the most appetizing thing in this place at the moment? Or, maybe I'm just so famished that you appear more appetizing then you really are. I wonder?" Nicolet said softly, allowing a brief smile that showed a little more fang then she normally offered. What the hell she thought, she might as well have some fun and enjoy herself as she waited for her meal to arrive. None the less she knew full well what she was doing. So much for not disturbing sleeping dogs. She thought as she leaned forward still looking at him as she rested her chin on one hand. Leaving her other on the table in plain sight. His tone had been weary, she really hadn't done a thing, outside of loosing track of time while she looked him over. So it was time for him to make the next move. ((OOC: Not a problem hun.)) |

He stiffened at her words, body tensing reflexively and eyes narrowing as he continued to stare at her. Perhaps it was the exhaustion kicking in or maybe his sense had begun to suffer while in this world; whatever the cause was, he could not interpret the subtle meaning behind her words, nor decide whether they were to be taken literally or metaphorically. Valerian would have bristled at either interpretation, but one he was far more able to handle than the other at this moment. But she'd made no move against him yet, only tossed around words heavily shrouded with meaning. And words were his forte, no? Years had been spent honing skills on the verbal battlefield, and though he'd recently traded in those skills for more physical, hands-on ones, sparring with wit wasn't something easily forgotten. Or so he would have liked to think. Recent circumstances, sadly, had done nothing to hone his sharp tongue, and only made him more susceptible to the attacks of others. "Perhaps you should eat something then. I'm sure our gracious hostess would be more than willing to bring you something, if she has not already done so." His gaze flickered to the hostess, some twenty feet away. Valerian had felt her gaze on him almost constantly these last few minutes, no doubt in a subtle effort to make sure that this tensely held stranger 1) offered no harm to the rest of her clients, and that 2) he himself was not in need of any refreshment himself. He needed both, and was quite positive that this would be the only decent establishment for miles, but something held him back temporarily, leaving him standing rather than sitting and sharing this table with the woman who'd been so focused on him. "No offense, Lady, but I'm not in the mood." His words were less hostile now (if they had ever been hostile to begin with), though just as detached as before. The aim was to inform, and not to insult. Though the term was spoken, he'd meant to use 'Lady' as a term of respect, an address due the upper nobility, and not as a coarse term replacing 'girl' or 'woman.' He smiled, briefly. "I don't believe I'm appetizing at all. If I had been, I'm sure I would been attacked by wild animal long before I reached this place." He shrugged and looked away, content for the moment to taken in the surroundings of the place he'd chosen to stay in for the night, whether his conversation partner realized it or not. "In any case, I really don't think you want to associate yourself with me. Not unless you'd like to keep me company in hell." ((ooc: Short and not good at all. But I figured you'd rather have something to work with than nothing at all. =/)) |

She noticed as his demeanor shifted, tensing. He was still vary wary. She realized even as he seemed to take a moment to think over her words. Then he responded, telling her that she should eat something. That the hostess could provide. Taking the joy, out of every word she'd uttered. Nicolet thought even as she watched him look back to the hostess. Who was keeping an eye on them. “No offense, Lady, but I'm not in the mood.” He said evenly, as he gave her a slight smile in return and continued. Explaining politely why he didn't consider himself appetizing. Nicolet found herself trying not to laugh at the picture he painted. Of being attacked by wild animals due to looking appetizing. A vary vivid picture of a small ravenous squirrel. Attempting to consume this gentleman in a fashion of your normal starving squirrel. She thought even as she tried to listen. Though his words did catch her attention and shattered the image she had so been enjoying. “In any case, I really don't think you want to associate yourself with me. Not unless you'd like to keep me company in hell.” He said, though his tone was bland, as his eye's drifted over the room. Cyane, chose that moment to bring her order. Walking over with a plater in her hand balanced gracefully. Holding the bowl of stew, and tankard of ale. She had ordered. “Will that be all, hun?” The brunet asked even as she looked from Nicolet to the company before her. “Could you bring another of the same for my companion?” Nicolet asked Cyane, with a polite smile. “Sure.” The hostess said. As she turned away briskly. “Need a guide?” Nicolet offered after the hostess had moved away. Giving him a chance to adjust to the change in situation. As she, reached for the bowl of stew Cyane had set before her. “After all hell, is a horrid place to wander. It would have been nice to have a guide, or at least directions when I last visited.” She said seriously even as she took a bite of stew. Relishing the flavor, and warmth it added to her. She really had been hungry, and she wasn't about to wait on him, to fix that issue. No matter how polite she was content with being. Though on a second thought, he looked as tired and wary as she felt. She had no reason to be rude either. “Your welcome to the ale.” She offered as she looked up at him once more. “Association, doesn't need to last longer then those involved wish it to.” She said after a moment waiting for him to chose. She wasn't attacking, and she was playing much nicer now that she had food before her. Nicolet did have to admit a small tinge of disappointment at his earlier rebuke. Still, she wasn't the kind to walk away, especially when she was sitting. Besides at the moment she found him to be the most interesting thing in this place. ((ooc: Not a problem hun, you've given me more to work with then others. Thanks for getting something up. Hope life improves for both of us.)) |

The hostess returned then with food, perhaps catching a sense of his meaning in the look he'd just shot her. He'd always wondered if innnkeepers had a touch of the psychic about them; how else could they respond so promptly so all the various whims of their patrons? They were a breed of people he would never understand. His companion, despite his silence, went ahead and ordered for him, asking the hostess to kindly bring another portion of food and drink. Valerian didn't know what to make of the action. Was it a signal of friendship, an action meant to comfort, or was it a subtle manipulation, the food meant as a chain to keep him at the table, leaving him no way to back out without seeming like a heartless bastard? Although, if it had indeed been the second one, he probably would have backed out and not cared at all. He'd done far worse things than snub a person. But he was tired, and she seemed to be the least harmless of all the people in the main room. Not to mention, she actually seemed to have a sense of humor. So he shrugged, a slight roll of the shoulders and pulled out the chair directly opposite her, settling himself down gracefully into the hard wooden seat. At her generous offer, he shook his head. "It's fine. I don't need a drink right now. You didn't need to order food for me. All I really need is some rest." Not the complete truth, but not a bald-faced lie either. He hadn't eaten in a day, but he'd hadn't slept for far longer than that, and if he was forced to rank them in order of importance, sleep definitely would have won out. But he had enough energy to keep his posture straight in the chair and to look her in the eye and hold a decent conversation without yawning every other word. "Mm, no, I'm finding that exploring Hell on my own is a rather...interesting experience." He offered her a smile, this one warmer than any others he'd given recently. Perhaps exhaustion really was wearing him thin, or perhaps she really was nothing more than she was pretending to be; in either case, he found himself warming up to her. "However...I do still need a guide. Not for hell, but for this place....Elenlond." The name rolled off his tongue a bit clumsily. It still held no significance to him, an unfamiliar name for an unfamiliar place. "I'm something of a newcomer, if you couldn't tell, and I find myself in need of someone to...explain things to me. If you know of someone who could do that, I'd be very much obliged." |

She watched him intently as he took the seat across from her at the table. Offering a warmer and more polite smile as he turned down her offer of the ale, and mentioned that she hadn't needed to order for him. As he explained that he was more in need of rest. She had to agree that it was high on her list of priorities. Though she also knew the value of food. She held her silence, as he mentioned that he was having an interesting time exploring hell on his own. She continued to eat, at a steady pace. While she listened to him continue about needing a guide for the world its self. Mentioning that he was a new comer, and needed someone to explain things to him. She attempted not to choke on her food, as she fought back a laugh at his mention of being obliged to a person who could help him. Though it only took a minute for her eye to catch on another patron, sitting at the bar. He was being overly loud, she noticed as she had a to concentrate on the one before, as the guy at the bar sloshed his drink over the other customers. “My name is Nicolet. Would you excuse me for a moment?” She said as she new he was waiting for a more detailed response. She rose from her seat, careful to make sure she didn't knock the table as she did so. She didn't want to spill her stew, as she heard the shout of another irate customer who had ended up wearing more ale then he had intended to. Nicolet moved swiftly to the side of her hostess, who was now frowning, as she marched steadily, towards the pair. Placing a soft hand on the womans shoulder, to catch her attention. “If you don't mind I'll see our friend to the door?” She said softly to Cyane. Who's eyes widened for a moment, before she gathered herself to respond. “Don't make a mess.” Was all she said with a slight nod. Nicolet was moving before Cyane had the chance to finish speaking. Her short blade, was in her hand as she walked up behind the drunk at the bar. The one who'd been shouting at him, noticed and quickly moved away. She placed the blade squarely against his lower back. Enough so he could feel it's point but not enough to break the skin. Grabbing the collar of his shirt, with her free hand. “Sorry sir. I think its time for you to leave.” She spoke softly, as she leaned over his shoulder. “What? Why?” He responded trying to turn even as he felt her blade and seemed to realize his situation. Looking around him, at the other who had moved away without him noticing. “I would like to get some sleep tonight. Now I can't vary well do that if your down here making a ruckus, can I?” She asked digging the blade a little deeper causing him to move off his stool. She had to steady him, as she maneuvered him, by blade and shirt collar towards the door. “I didn't do anything.” He said as he staggered. “Your right, and your not going to. Your going home to sleep it off.” She said softly in response. “Why, should I? I didn't do anything... I's just having a good time.” He repeated as she pushed him more forcefully to the door, trying to keep him on his feet as she did so. It was difficult, and hard to manage as he was taller and heavier then herself, by a great deal. Though for all appearances he was nothing more then a drunk farmer. “All the more reason to enjoy it, by going home and sleeping it off.” She said her tone taking on a more biting response. “Fine.” He finally conceded as they reached the door. She released her grip on his collar, and moved her blade back to it's sheath. He spun on her at the door, with a closed fist. She had the last minute to duck when she noticed it coming. It barely missed ruffling her hair as she dropped to the floor and swept his feet with one leg. He came down with a hard thump hitting his head against the door jam as he did so. Rendering him unconscious. She stood dusting off her hands. As she opened the door, and shoved him with her foot out the door. Closing it behind him. She turned around to find almost every single eye on her. She gave a brief nod to her hostess, as she moved ignoring the stares, to her seat. She was still hungry and tired she thought, as she collapsed into her chair once more. This time jostling the table, causing her some of her stew, and ale to slosh over the edges. “Well.” She said eying them ruefully. “I'm not a native, at least not that I know of. Not much help in the guide or information department regarding this place. Sometimes I think I'd preferre hell at least I know that place.” She said as she pulled the bowl of stew towards her once more to take another bite. Only glancing as she noticed the hostess, making her way to their table once more. “On the house.” Cyane said as she set down the second order of stew and ale on the table. “Thanks.” Nicolet replied softly as she watched the woman walk away again. “So you have a name?” She asked softly between bites. |

She didn't answer his query directly, not at first. Her attention didn't even seem to be focused entirely on him, one pale blue eye focused on him as the other roved about the tavern, resting on this drunk patron or that rowdy man as she ate. Valerian wasn't quite sure what to make of this, but in all honestly, he was a bit too tired to examine this strange woman fully. For the most part, she was human, but there were those small qualities that weren't quite right, much as he had his own distinct quirks that caused people to do double takes whenever they first laid eyes on him. Her overall appearance suggested nothing out of the ordinary, but the delicate points of her eyes, as well as the bared canines whenever she spoke, imparted to him the knowledge that he'd best be wary around him, no matter how tired he was. The unknown was often dangerous; he'd parried with it far too often not to have learned that lesson. Abruptly, Nicolet - as she'd introduced herself - stood, excusing herself as she went off to do some chore or another that she hadn't seen fit to enlighten him about. His brow furrowing, and a frown touching his lips, light golden eyes followed her projected path, landing on a drunk man sloshing ale over his neighbors. Valerian's frown deepened. It wasn't an uncommon sight, to see patrons roaring drunk and picking fights. In fact, he would have found it downright odd if the people hadn't been picking fights. So why then, had Nicolet suddenly appointed herself peacekeeper of Seldona Tavern and gone over to deal with the offenders? It didn't make much sense to an already harried mind, and Valerian was of a mind to follow and see just what it was she was doing. He'd even pushed himself partially out of the chair, body slightly bent over the wooden table and hands pressed against the table-top. But he didn't, remaining instead in his half-upright position, amber eyes focused on Nic for the most part. She was dispatching some errant customer, a firm shove towards the door that quickly escalated into a fight, albeit a short one. He tried to punch, she dropped and felled him with a single kick. Not much else to be expected from a drunken man and a sturdy woman with all her facilities in check. Valerian resumed his seat as she returned, his gaze upon her now unreadable. He still didn't know what to make of that little interlude, especially when she made no mention of it upon her return, merely dropping into her chair with a tired sigh and picking up her spoon to eat once more, resuming conversation as though nothing at all out of the ordinary had happened. She was interrupted once by the hostess, bringing the second order of food that was meant for him. The redhaired man gave the innkeeper a smile, silent thanks for the food, and began eating, slowly though, because tiredness was warring with hunger. The tighter-than-usual grip he had on his spoon was proof of that. "You're not a native, then? Pity. I'll pick up the pace and look for someone else then." He would have preferred that she was a native. Hers was a presence he might have actually been able to deal with. But he hadn't been expecting too much, so he supposed there wasn't much lost. Now for his name... "Valerian." He shrugged as he said it, and shoveled more food into his mouth. The time was long gone when he'd been embarrassed to reveal his name. Now it was just another part of him that people would have to learn to accept. "You may shorten it, if you wish." A couple more bites, then: "Was there any particular reason you felt compelled to escort that man out? You and the innkeeper do seem to be on very good terms, but I wasn't aware that she had made you her official watchdog. Please correct me if I'm wrong though. Was that action on her behalf, or did you have a personal complaint to lodge against the man?" |

His expression was blank as she looked up at his comment on her not being a native, and having to look else where. Though for all his words he didn't sound or look disappointed in the least. She thought taking another bite of her stew, and watching him do the same. Then between bites and seemingly out of the blue he said a strange word. “Valerian.” At first she was puzzled, not understanding. Till he continued by saying she could shorten it. Though it still took a moment of thought for her to realize it was his name. She merely responded with a nod, though it had taken her a moment. They ate in comfortable silence for a few moments. Then he spoke again. Asking why she felt the need to escort the drunk man out. Even as he mentioned his personal observation on a possible relationship between her and the Innkeeper. Though was still uncertain if her actions had been for the well being of the Inn or more selfish. “Personal complaint, other then the noise he was causing? None at all. I don't particularly know the Inn Keeper though, she's an observant woman. Hmmm, really didn't have a reason, I guess.” She responded honestly with a shrug. Even as she took another bite of her stew. She honestly hadn't given it much thought. Till he had mentioned it. “I suppose it had to do with the noise he was causing, if I had to name a reason.” She said off handedly even as she tried to talk her answer out. More speaking to herself then to the Valerian. “I've always been slightly impulsive, so if somethings bothering I don't think much on it.” She said with another slight shrug, as she looked at the man before her. He was an interesting creature. Admittedly not from here. As she suspected she wasn't a native of this area or possibly even this world. She thought to herself as she watched him. “So do you have a story, or just wandering along your merry way as I am?” She asked after a moment of watching him and contemplating what a curiosity he appeared to be. |
