Welcome to Elenlond, an original medieval fantasy forum! We're always looking for new, dedicated members.

Elenlond is composed of two continents: Soare and Esiria. Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity.

But how long will that peace last?

Destructive Minds Among Lovely Flowers; With Alvar only

Gratiano slipped through the labyrinth of the Rose Garden. The sun shone fantastically on the morning dew of each and every pedal, though it was not the stunning beauty of this miraculous he came for. The thrill of the chase had once again set in upon his mind, the helpless fleeing from the mindless fiend. Cornered in a stalemate, backs against the wall, fearing the ever building tension.

He turned round a corner, but alas, his prey had fled. Muttering curses under his breath, he shifted his form, becoming a lynx, and reentered the maze, where he would patiently await the next victims.

The lush rows of flowers seemed endless from his new point of view. Structures such as this were of no use to any man, they were just playthings for blind buffoons.
"A rose may carry a sweet scent, but they are of no use to the trivial matters of the heart." Gratiano voiced quietly in his mind.

Footsteps echoed closer towards him, though, they couldn't be a victim. He was praying upon couples today. This one was alone. He tensed up.
The situation was in his favor no longer.

Alvar

Alvar walked slowly, his head facing downwards. He was wearing a large dark green robe, which covered all of his artificial limbs, as well as disguising his crossbow, which hung from his waist. He needed more now than ever to disguise himself, recently he had lost his arm (the non artificial one) and had to replace it. He had managed to get back to his liar in time, and used the arm of a absoloute beast of a man, strong like an ox, to replace it, and although it was stronger, he had not got quite used to it yet... His co ordination was a little off, which was a problem when he wanted to operate and experiment.

That was why he had came here, by and large, to think. He needed to get away from his work for a bit... Even with as noble a calling as his, you needed a break sometimes. This place was quite... Relaxing. In his mind he was going over his next procedures, he planned to use the rest of the strong man for something, well, he was planning on using him for parts, as he had made a bit of a mess, it was tought taking his arm whilst only having one yourself.

He absent mindedly turned a corner. Within a second of turning he had noticed a lynx ahead of him, and immediatly grabbed for his crossbow, which he held in his left hand, pointing it at the animal. "What are you doing here?" he asked, a little amused. Maybe he would find something worth hunting here after all...

Gratiano flinched as the crossbow was slung out, hopping back a foot or two. The man was covered completely with a robe, hiding a, possibly, monstrous sight. However, the man's scent still lingered through the soft breeze. He took the scent in, identifying it as putrid smell of cold steel. He stared up at the man's face, shooting out a piercing gaze as a warning.

"I am performing my job, my duty to society." He replied in a nervous tone.

Right then Gratiano realized he made a grave error. Speaking to a figure, either man or beast, while in a shifted form can lead to their understanding that he was not a simple animal, but a man as well.
He began to back away, but then he felt the power of the lynx form to wear away. He was being forced back into his human form.
"No! This is too early!" he cried as the blinding light settled around his body, switching him to his normal state.

There he stood, the chain wrapped around his shoulder, the book cradled by his side, and an enraged look plastered upon his face; eyes fixated straight at the man before him.

Alvar

The Lynx spoke. Well, this was amusing... Not only was a wild creature here, in a very... Human (oh, how he loathed that word) part of the gardens, and a dangerous creature at that, but it was a changling... How very... Interesting. In Alvar's mind, cogs began to turn, ideas formed of tortures and experiments he could visit upon it...

The changling backed away, and seemed to be under some distress as it changed back to a man, a weak, pitiable thing of flesh. Like Alvar was... Oh so long ago, before he could remember. But like this one could (albeit, it seemed temporary) he changed into something strong, pitiless steel morphed with mighty magic, with at its heart still the impulse of flesh, something still unique to the world. Alvar wished he could remember how to make it, for when he did thousands, no, millions of constructs would be made, and he would be able to ply his craft on a scale the human mind could not even imagine...

"Your duty to society?" Alvar questioned, a smirk tracing across his face, his one coloured eye sparkling with glee. He liked people with a sense of duty, a few of them turned their duty to him, after enough of their mind was stripped away by months of mind bending torture, of course. It was regretable, but Alvar was confortable with the fact he had to destroy what was weak to make something strong. He had to destroy the imperfect world to create one which was flawless, it was simple, really. The creature seemed to be... Angry? Again, cogs in Alvar's mind whirred, thinking, planning. "Then we are similar. I am here fulfilling my duty to the world. Or at least the world of tommorow" his crossbow dropped a little, and his left hand became more visible. It was metal, undoubtedly, but with a faint... Glow? Of magic, to look at it you would say it pulsated dark purple, but if you conentrated, then there appeaered to be nothing but metal.

"I must say, you are glorious... To change like you do, I must say, I am quite interested" Alvar used his right hand to remove his hood, showing his face. The first thing noticable was that the skin colour on the right hand and his head did not match. After this the difference in his eye colours (one devoid of colour, with a metal plate above it) seemed to be most striking. The look he gave was... Quite strange. "I have not been able to meet one like you properly, not even in my line of work" his voice carried only one emotion. Curiousity. He wanted to understand, to know, and to be able to immitate.

Gratiano watched the shimmer of the metal in the light of the sun. An arm made of pure steel. A bit strange, but this man was rather eccentric to begin with. His manner, was just, odd. A freak of society, like himself. It was a bit of a putrid sight, the unfeeling steel creating a human appendage.

Of course, the interest in him threw his thoughts off course. There were a grand assortment of beings like himself, yet this man noted that he had never met one in a close situation such as this? Did he not know how to pick up a conversation? Though, it is possible that no one would even wish to associate themselves with a monster like him.

"You're quite the monster. And here I thought that I wouldn't see another beast of my caliber in this garden at all." Gratiano replied, attempting to rile up some additional emotions, to gain an upper hand in the situation. "You're a sinister man, I can just see it in your eyes. Quite feral there. I guess me might have one or two qualities in common."
He reached for his chain, unraveling it from the perched position around his shoulder. It was the perfect precaution. As long as he did not perform a rash movement, the situation's peak would be around this range.

"Allow me to propose a question for you." He picked up, a grin about to form upon his face. "Does not a cold, unfeeling steel arm like yours create a rational feeling of inhumanity? Does the mutilated body of yours make you feel like a dreaded fiend? Do you not feel terrible that you could have changed how you evolved into the monster you are now?"
He did not say 'devolved', as to him: a man who grows away from this mortal being and creates a new meaning or feeling of life for himself to grow and prosper, has 'evolved'.

Alvar

Alvar chuckled a little, bringing his empty (fleshy) right hand to his mouth to stifle it "My, my, don;t we play with words" he commented, and hs grip tightened on his crossbow as he saw the other slowly grab a chain. So he was arming himself. Alvar calculated, and decided he would be alright, if it came to combat... He had plently of tricks up his sleeve.

"Although I must argue with your points" he began, his coloured locked on the changling, whilst the dead eye scanned around, noting everything. "I am no monster, I am merely progress. When society was young, we lived in caves, we did everything for ourselves. And then, it grew, we built things, magic came into use, we developed tools and language and culture. In short, we turned the world we lived in, which was unfavourable to us, into something that worked for us. All I have done is the same, for we have only changed the external. I am what happens when you change the internal... I am a sceintist, a observer, a researcher.", he licked his lips "I am progress, and I am going to remake the whole world" his crossbow began to ever so slowly raise as he prepared... This would be an interesting being to capture... His mind could not contain delight as he thought of slicing open its ribcage, peering at what was inside... What made it tick.

"How about you?" Alvar replied "Do you not feel inhuman? Having to hide a monsters face behind the dull canvas of weak, ugly, malliable flesh?"

Recreating the entire world. The man obviously had a few screws loose, but then again, so did everyone else. The differences are what makes life as interesting as it is. Asserting your own dominance through superior abilities or, in this case, technology, was just a futile effort to change the views others have of you and the views of yourself. Simply put, an insecure man needs technological advantages to force himself to believe that he is a superior person in all ways.
In Gratiano's honest opinion, he was a complete nutjob, though, he was a complete hypocrite himself.

"Humanity is a vague idea. Though we constantly talk about ourselves as 'humans' and fulfill our own selfish desires by explaining to ourselves that because we are one type of being, we are better than another." he replied, focusing in on the man's slight movements, attempting to analyze his next course of action. "You are no exception to this superiority complex. You built yourself up to become a more perfect man, one that no longer even resembles what he must have looked years before. Your constant fear of losing your edge to other beings who might be surpassing your level leads you to updating your body, adding more and more. Just to feel superior to all others."

"I, however, slipped away from this superiority complex through tapping into the true beast inside. I am a monster; a hideous, vicious, insane beast. I reject my humanity and embrace the feral instincts of a ruthless killer. While you might hold some moral virtues close to your heart, I discard all sense of morality. As an inhuman being, such are useless to me."

Alvar

Alvar laughed again, harder this time "You think I am trying to make myself perfect?" he asked, his crossbow falling from its ready condition "You think anyone could think this is beautiful?" he closed his eyes and threw his head back. A manical laugh, really "I am nothing like perfection" he said, calming, his crossbow gripped tightly once more "I am ugly, twisted and damaged".

He stopped. Those words... They were not his own, they were an echo... He could hear them now, in a womans voice. Who was it? Why did they, they, sting? Why did they hurt so badly? What was it? Who was she to tell him that! All he had given up! He had sacrificed himself just for that! No! No! She couldn't! He did it for Her! He gave up himself for Her! How could she judge him so harshly, hate him so!

Who was that voice... Why was he so angry... Was it someone from his past? Had he remembered something else, another glimpse of purpose? It was but a memory of a voice... That had triggered a violent mental backlash. He had to be calm. He had to forget this for now, he needed to be strong, to know the beast, he could not let... Quite what it was escaped him now, likely it dwelt in that same damaged part of him mind. Curses... But he felt his anger drain away also, his fists and facial features unclenching...

"No, my bestial friend, I am nothing like perfection... I merely strive to be the one who creates it, and, I myself, am an experiment for various parts of this process. We all need to suffer for progress" he licked his lips, his voice now returning to how it was previously "You have yourself progressed, do you not see? ou said it yourself, you are inhuman... But at times you take the form of one. My friend, you are not are not inhuman, but posthuman, one direction of advancement made by tapping into the power of beasts, just as I have tapped into the power of unfeeling metal and uncaring magic". He tapped his chin, and his eyes lit up "Tell me... Do you think your paticular brand of life might have a place in my New World... Can I use what you are? Can you use what I am?" he grinned a little... Strangely, maybe sadisticaly, maybe with joy... Not even Alvar really knew with what. He did not even know his plan. Was it a ruse, to trap the thing? That was unlike him, he had plently of chance to open fire, and get a good start and bolting it down, he just had to move a little... Fire, and grab that chain with his metal arm, before pulling him closer into another wave of bolts. When he collapsed of the induced exhaustion, bring him back... Why had he not done that? Was he humouring him? Was it something else?

The cogs in the scientists mind whirred into hyperaction.

Gratiano took notice to the maniac's movements. They were becoming slightly erratic, not beneficial to him whatsoever. The questions the freak was posing began to annoy him as well. He laughed to shake away his nerves. Another cold one, revealing the loss of natural feelings or emotions. The laugh became a mocking rattle towards the crazed lunatic as well.

"A new world?" Gratiano spat out during his laughing fit. "First, how can you even overthrow any polities with magic and cold steel that runs from your body alone? It takes one man to plot the resistance, but a group of specialists to put the plot in action. How can you create a New World Order with your flimsy logic?"
He began to prepare his chain during his short lecture to the man. From what he saw, the monster definitely needed a sharp lesson in logical thought.

"Second, how can man create something of perfection? If a man can not do so, how could you do such, an insane being like yourself? Man cannot create a perfect being, neither can the gods or deities that humans hold so much faith in. If they could create a perfect world, why is ours filled with monsters and killers like you and I? How can you, a simple, albeit crazed, man, who is imperfect in all manners create a perfect world if these perfect beings above us cannot do that simple task?"

"And lastly, to answer your foul-hearted question: I am no tool for others to wield to their bidding. Neither are you a tool for me to utilize to my wishes. While we are all inhuman beings, we all have equal rights as beings and cannot be bent out of shape to perform another's goals. Now, good day kind sir."

He twisted the chain into the crude shape resembling a noose, and began a wild dash towards the man. He was planning on not killing him, but instead disabling him for a temporary moment of time, during which he could make an escape.

Gods? This man truly held faith in them? He believed that this world was due to them? Because of them? He believed that they were anything more than snivelling children, who had long forgotten this crude playthign they made so long ago? And then, he stated he had no intention of working with him... It was not a question, but a statement... The power of the beast would be his. All he needed was a sample... He did not know how much he would need, but bone, brain and muscle matter would do.

"Your Gods are a lie!" Alvar called as the beast charged him, and his crossbow, at the ready still from earlier, sprang up and began spitting bolts at the rapidly approaching man beast thing "Our existance is proof of that!" he clenched his other fist, and the ground just in front of him grew dark, twisting and forming into a hideous form.

The experiment Alvar summoned was... Impressive physically. Or rather, it was big. A wall of flesh, with a small head located somewhat of centre, below the shoulders but just above the waist. It had one remaining eye in its human face, although to look at it was dead and lifeless, as if it no longer understood anything at all. With one massive it reached out for Gratiano, despite the man being too far away from him to reach for another second or so.

"Our existance proves that much!" he continued as he sidestapped back a little, and to the left. His accuracy would suffer now, but he knew this experiment could take enough punishment to buy him time. Admittedly, it had about as much chance of doing anything other than madly flailing about as Alvar did of winning a Miss Soare competition, hence why he was backing away. "The Gods are either dead, vanished or never cared in the first place! If this world is to be improved, its people like me that must do it!" he opened fire once more, and was tempted to summon more of his children. He decided against it. None of them had the subtlety to allow him to capture the specimen, so unless things looked dicey (Alvar could not comprehend how that would happen) he would leave them. He still had his magic, and his bladed arm if his enchanted repeater and experiment failed.

He grinned with hunger.
