Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity. But how long will that peace last? The Crimson Claw was on a mission. He had been preparing for this quest, to face one of his greatest trials yet, head on without the help of any others. However, that would not be the case today. It would seem fortune had been smiling on Sammeln, as she often did, for a thief had been foolish enough to try to pick his pocket in the last town he had stopped at. The all seeing eyes of an Ophite knew how to watch their wallets with care. When a sneaky had had grabbed the purse, a sneakier tail tripped him. A more powerful hand had hoisted him face to face, and a well aimed fireball had been warning enough to silence him. However, this thief was lucky enough not to have his hands removed from his person as punishment often demanded. Sammeln had seen the chance of opportunity so instead had told the stranger of the vast reward, paid him ten gold pieces up front, and when he consented, brought him along on his quest. If nothing else, he'd use the fleshling as bait. The charriot rocked unsteadily and it's abnormal mounts let out angry hisses as they strained harder to pull it over the rocky terrain. Finally it came to a stop and Sammeln knew they were at the onset of the true adventure. Reaching across the cabin he shook the cloaked figure who was at least pretending to sleep. "Get up, it's time to move. We are at the base of the roost." Sammeln then kicked open the metal door to his chariot letting it slam against the side as he thudded heavily to the ground outside it. His two horse sized lizards that pulled the massive ride, seemed to actually be tired by the trek. However, Sammeln knew why. Climbing up the back of the chariot, his claws found the bindings for his mighty shield. His free hand took hold of the handle of his tremendous lance. Growling fiercely as he lifted the two heavy weapons Sammeln had them in position and leaped off of the chariot, this time causing a small shake in the earth when he landed. Stonewall, and the Lance of Sorrows were his weapons chosen for this fight. Looking back towards the chariot he called to it. "Come on, I'm not paying you to wait here in the chariot. We have a mountain to climb!" Turning back to face ahead of him, there was the stone mountain with a red glow at it's summit. This was the home of one of the rarest and fiercest beasts in existence. A dragon of the long dragon variant, more specifically a subspecies known as Meteor Dragon. Edited by Sammeln, Aug 8 2009, 02:51 AM.

Stranghill grumbled slightly as he awoke. While he was annoyed that he had been so foolish as to get caught picking a pocket, he was glad he had. It gave him this opportunity. Now, he could pull off what might just become one of his greatest thefts. And he didn't even have to kill anybody, though he might have to run from a dragon. "Yeah, yeah . . ." Stranghill summoned up his shadow-cover as he threw off his cloak. He stepped out of the chariot, still mumbling. "Sun's not even fully gone yet. Vampires aren't meant to be up at this time." Despite his complaints, Stranghill shook out his arms and stretched a bit, finally getting comfortable. He looked at his surroundings. "Ah. Climbing. At least that's something I'm used to." Stranghill didn't quite know much about this Sammeln character. His informants had never given him any information concerned him, which meant there was no reason for Stranghill to be concerned with him. Still, he felt like there was more to this man than he was seeing. The next time he got to a tavern, he would certainly check his sources about this man. Stranghill looked at Sammeln, noticing his weapons. "I'm sorry, are we stealing or fighting? I signed up to steal treasure, not to slay a dragon. You don't really think you're going to win, do you?" Stranghill's eyed the man both curiously and suspiciously. He didn't really think he could kill a dragon, did he? Stealing treasure was one thing, but to actually slay one . . . Of course, Stranghill didn't actually know much about the dragon itself, as he hadn't asked (important rule of a man in the business of theft and murder: don't ask too many questions). He assumed that it was not one of the smaller ones, but one of the greater dragons. He assumed it would be large, powerful, and very angry with anyone who disturbed it. "I really don't care, of course. As long as I get my hands on the reward you promised, it's irrelevant whether you want to risk your head to slay a beast of this kind. Still, I stand more of a chance of surviving if you're not a corpse, so I'd rather you stay alive. If you simply have a death-wish, there are easier ways to go about it," Stranghill joked, tossing his daggers in the air and catching them. He was in a relatively good mood, having had a decent rest. "But, enough of this. Let's get to business, shall we? The less time I spend here, the sooner I can become even wealthier. |

The hesitancy of his newly hired shadows associate was apparent. Sammeln smirked at him before speaking. "Even if we weren't planning on facing a dragon, would you really think it wise to go in without any means of defense? It starts with simple plundering; but the artifacts I am after will undoubtedly get it's eventual attention no matter how carefully you attempt to abscond with them. However the reward, as I promised, will be well worth the risk... and if you die, consider it penalty for trying to steal from the wrong person." Sammeln turned away from his vampiric ally, and pointed his lance up the mountain. "Onward, we have a time limit i am sure you are accustomed to. Sunrise marks the failure of this mission for the dragon will be unstoppable then." Not waiting for the other, he began to make his way up the steep incline of the mountain face. "If you have any more questions, I suggest you ask them now." |

Stranghill laughed at the response of his partner. Or was it employer? He wasn't quite sure. Either way, he was making money. "Questions? No questions. Let's just get moving." Stranghill, unencumbered by any heavy shield or weapons, and naturally agile, Stranghill quickly moved ahead of Sammeln during the climb. He took a moment to stop and turn to face his partner/employer. "You do know that when that dragon starts fighting, I will do everything in my power to avoid it. If that means it focuses on you instead of me, I'll not be held accountable," Stranghill chuckled, making light of the fact that his statement was no joke. "Just warning you. I know how to handle myself in a fight, but not a fight against a dragon. I don't agree with fire too well. Nor does anyone else." While Stranghill wasn't actually the kind of vampire who had a natural weakness to fire, he still seriously disliked it. "So let's make this quick, shall we?" |

"When it comes to who does and does not agree with fire, speak for yourself my flamable friend" Sammeln stated with a smirk on his reptilian face. As the last words left his mouth a small fireball flicked off the end of his tongue as if reminding the thief of his earlier feat. Sammeln wasn't fire proof, but it was always nice to perpetuate yet another myth about his abilities. The other had been keeping a steady pace ahead of Sammeln, and continued to do so for the rest of the way up the mountain. Sammeln had not been asked questions; but to pass the time as they made their precarious trek, he chose to speak to the other on what he knew of the dragon. "It is called Sunblaze, said to be a descendant of the first fire dragon. It's power rises and sets with the sun and during daytime, it's body is literally wreathed in so much flame one will die from the heat from twenty paces away. However, nightfall gives us an opening to strike, and to steal. It must rest in it's burning den to keep itself heated and prepare for it's next blaze. Long ago, this particular dragon was being worshiped by a small tribe who were somehow in possession of some valuable relics, glittering prizes of antiquity, and it is those prizes that the dragon now holds in it's roost. However, the real prize, is this dragon's egg. THAT is what I am truly after. The shell of this egg is made from a material the color of gold but the qualities of a diamond. Fragments of it sell for veritable hills of gold, due to their tremendous rarity... and to be in possession of one such an infant... the value to owning a beast like this... it is unmentionable." Now that they were closer to the goal, and he was traveling behind the thief so they could not try to turn and flee right away, Sammeln was choosing to be more specific about what he wanted and what treasures they were after. Having spoken these things, he realized they were closer to the summit and it would be better for them if things went more quietly. There was time for the thief to reply if they were so inclined; but Sammeln would probably not speak again until he was giving directions. |

Stranghill didn't bother hiding the wild grin that formed on his face as his employer, or partner, spoke of the value of the theft. It was only then, though, that he realized a problem. "I don't suppose there are multiple eggs of this dragon . . ." He mentioned as casually as possible. From his description, simply stealing the treasures from the dragon would be nothing compare to the value of the egg. If it came to it, he would not let such a valuable item escape his grasp easily. If he could end the man's life and get away with the egg, he wouldn't have a tinge of guilt. However, the dragon was a serious threat, and Stranghill knew that he couldn't fight off the creature, and might not even be able to escape it, should it get angry enough. He didn't want to risk dying, so it was unlikely that he would end up betraying his partner. Besides, he actually didn't dislike the man, so it wouldn't be too bad if he ended up surviving. Still, the money always comes first, in the end. |
