The city really was beautiful. There was something incredibly comforting to Salster about the reddened color of it. It reminded him of Hell, which was actually not as horrifying as one might think, at least when you were an employee and not a captive. For the first time in a while, Salster was in a very good mood. Everything seemed to be going well, at least for now. Nobody bothered him as he strolled happily through the city, and he preferred it that way. He wasn't even thinking about his past, or lack-there-of. He spent quite some time doing nothing more than walking through the city, but his legs were finally getting tired. He decided to stop at the inn, first to just relax, and then rent a room and rest. The tavern was bustling with travelers, there for whatever reason, but Salster managed to find an empty table and took a seat. He ordered a simple ale as he leaned back in his seat. Not only was he in a good mood simply because of the look of the city, but he wasn't wearing his helmet. He never found his armor hot, nor all that cumbersome, but his helmet restricted his vision and clanged around a bit, so he preferred to leave it off if not necessary. Nobody asked questions about his odd skin-color or teeth, as most people had matters of their own to deal with, or simply didn't want to risk angering someone with his intimidating appearance. "Here you are, sir." A woman handed him his ale and he restrained himself from grinning, as his sharp teeth would only frighten her if shown. She was perfectly pleasant despite the fact she was obviously slightly frightened. "Thank you," Salster said as gently as she could. It elicited a small smile from her and she continued to the next tables. Salster, now not fearful of frightening anyone, drank and grinned, happy to be so totally unbothered, at least for now. |

In the darkened corner of one of the rooms along the second floor of the tavern, the demon Mirix sat. He was seated comfortably in a cushioned rocking chair, drumming his sharp claws against one another, pale eyes staring into the open area of the room as he swayed forward and back. All was silent aside from the squeaks of the rocker and the clacking of his claws as he took the time to simply enjoy the memory of what he spent the entire day doing. The demon wasn’t alone in the room as there were two forms on the large bed shrouded in the darkness. The one closest to him was male and ever so dead; his throat having been torn out and body littered with vicious slashes and deep bite marks, evidence of the demon’s lust for murder and hunger for flesh. The other was female and unlike her companion, completely unharmed, for the most part anyway. Slightly stained with the blood of the other that had seeped into the sheets, the woman was in a state of deep sleep. A toothy grin pulled at the corners of Mirix’s mouth as he fondly remembered the terrified expression on her face when she came in to find the demon feasting on her traveling companion. The grin widened when he remembered also how that fear became mixed with curiosity and fought down desire when she found herself pinned and completely at his mercy. Humans were such odd creatures and though he’d still not think twice about killing one, when he found one that seemed as crazy as most thought himself to be, he couldn’t help but smile. After a little while longer of simply sitting there, he stood and headed towards the door, scooping his shirt from the ground as he did so. Mirix had already cleaned himself of all traces that would link him to anything that had happened in the room so he needn’t worry about that detail. He’d also leave the woman to survive this encounter; there was no point in killing her too. When she awoke and fully realized what had happened to her friend, and processed what she willingly did with his murderer… Well, the thought of her reaction alone was more than enough reason for him to leave her be. The demon had just finished completely pulling the sleeveless article over his body when he reached the main downstairs area of the tavern. The barmaid passed him a questioning glance, having not recognized him as being one of the people who paid to have even been upstairs. He merely made a kissy face at her and grinned wickedly, to which she cringed lightly and went back to what she was doing. Mirix was just getting ready to leave when something caught his attention. His feline ears twitched and he stopped before looking around the tavern, sensing something that was sort of, kind of, familiar. As he scanned the room, his eyes quickly fell onto the form of the semi-armored crimson man sitting at a table enjoying a solitary drink. Approaching the red one without pretense, he wasn’t at all hesitant with plopping himself down in the opposite chair at the table, one arm hanging over the back of it while the other simply fell between his legs. His eyes flashed as he looked at the other with a pleased and fang filled grin and casual, joking air. ”Well would you look at that? I didn't think I'd find any kin here for at least another half century! Who might you be, big red?" |

"Big . . . Red?" Salster was nearly speechless at the surprise encounter. The man, as it was obviously a man, was nothing normal. In fact . . . something about him . . . Had this man called Salster . . . kin? Demon. "You . . . You too are a demon of sorts, aren't you?" He was certainly no hell-spawn, as he looked nothing like any of the other denizens of Hell. Still, Salster recognized the presence of a demon when he felt it. A rather . . . non-frightening demon, though. Salster was taller than him, bulkier than him, and didn't have those ridiculous cat ears. Still, the demon could have any number of abilities. For all Salster knew, his appearance was a charade. "What am I saying? Of course you are. But . . . Well, it has been quite some time since I've met any sort demon. Still, and I mean no offense, we are not kin. I . . . well, I will say we are different, and leave it at that." One of the tasks often given to Hell-Spawn in the mortal realm was to track down and eliminate reckless, rampant demons. Salster thought it might be a bad idea to reveal the fact that he was a Hell-Spawn. "Ah, but, I suppose I've ignored your question. I am Salster Corse. I came to this city hoping for nothing more than to ease my mind, and it has worked. I certainly did not think I would run into a demon either, though. What brings you to the city, demon?" Salster normally would have been more cautious, more suspicious, perhaps more blunt, rude, and ass-like as well, but he was in a good mood. From the ale to the city, he was simply not very alert. Why would he need to be? What harm could this demon do anyway? He certainly didn't seem threatening, and they were surrounded by people. Surely this demon couldn't be a threat if he was so polite in such a populated area. |

He chuckled at the other’s off guard response. He had been joking obviously, just a little something to break the ice and not appear so rigid and cold which he never thought to be a good first impression. Nodding at the hesitant asking for confirmation, he lightly thrummed the tips of his claws against the back of the chair, light eyes staring intensely into the reds of the other. Mirix didn’t bother sizing up the crimson man sitting across from him; he didn’t have any plans to engage the man in a fight. A demon such as he normally wasn’t one whose strength or power could be estimated on looks alone as sometimes it was the largest and most monstrous of the bunch who were the gentlest of souls. Not to say that the natural inclination of underestimation hadn’t worked in the demon’s favor; many a battle had been instantaneously decided due to an opponent’s oversight. “Oh?” He asked, brow rising as the other claimed the two of them to not be kin. He listened to the explanation, which was actually less than satisfactory with great curiosity. The demon wanted to know how, exactly, they were so different. It was clear, at least to him that they both came from a plane other than this one, so what was this differentiating factor? Though he did have a desire to further press the issue, he let it go, responding with a light shrug of the shoulders when the armored one decided to leave the subject alone. “Mmmm hmhmhmhm….” Mirix lightly closed his eyes and shook his head at the question presented, the first time during the encounter in which his eyes were not focused on Salster. He momentarily relived the events of the past several hours and a pleasant shiver ran through him, causing him sighed nostalgically. Reopening his eyes, he looked once more at Salster, a dreamy expression on his face. “Oh, the usual… Just seeing the sights, enjoying the people, sampling the food.” He smirked. “Taking in all that life has to offer, ya know?” The demon then nodded towards Salster's armor with a teasing grin. "For someone who only wants to ease his mind, ya seem a little overdressed." |

Salster laughed at the demon's reply, as well as the question. There wasn't really anything humorous about either, but Salster didn't much care. "Ah, yes, my armor. Well, I don't actually have a house, you see. There's nowhere for me to put the thing. It's really not all that inconvenient. Plus, it just means that, should someone be foolish enough to start something with me, I'll have quite the advantage. Not that i expect anything to happen," Salster responded. He brought his glass to his mouth, only to find it empty. "Hey!" Salster called over a barmaid. She turned around to face him, and Salster was surprised by a very hostile glance. The glance, though, was not towards him. It was towards the demon sitting across from him. Still, the barmaid came over and refilled Salster's glass as he handed her a few pieces of gold. She quite obviously avoided the other demon's gaze, but was grateful for the gold pieces, and didn't show any hostility towards Salster himself. Salster eased himself into his chair once more and let out a sigh of comfort. He took a sip of his now-full glass and chuckled. "That girl doesn't seem to like you much, eh? Not too good with the women, are you . . ." Salster trailed off. Normally, he would have added the man's name. The problem was, he didn't actually know the demon's name. "Why . . . I don't even know your name. What do you go by, demon?" Salster's ignorance sparked a bit more of his awareness. He straightened up in his seat and leaned on the table with the arm holding the glass. |

“Mmmm… Mortals are a foolish bunch as I’m sure you’ve found. Wouldn’t surprise me if one or a few attempted to take you down on a whim. Not one bit.” He shrugged, eyes falling casually to the table as the hand closest to it reached up and began idly carving random expletives along the bottom. He didn’t think very much of the mortal species; they were simply things to provide him with something to do and were easily expendable. Mirix’s eyes flashed at Salster’s sudden outburst and he looked up at him again, catching the oddly surprised expression that was painted onto it. His head tilted just a fraction, perplexed, before realizing that he wasn’t the one being spoken to and that the other had called for the barmaid. ”Oh.” He didn’t turn around to look at the approaching woman, though his ears twitched as he heard her approach and his eyes instantly locked onto her when she came within viewing range. She was trying hard to avoid looking at him, but that didn’t help much, her fear and dislike of him was clearly evident, wafting off of her body in waves as she poured the armored one another pint. He took in the scent with a deep breath and purred lightly while exhaling. He couldn’t help it; people’s negative feelings were like a drug to him, he couldn’t get enough. Though she was trying so very hard not to look at him, it was clear that Mirix was still intimidating the poor woman. His intense stare bore into her, the longer she was around, though only really for a few seconds seeming like an eternity to her. Surely it was a great relief when she could finally leave the table in haste and return to her other duties. Mirix said nothing regarding any of it and simply returned his casual attention to Salster once the girl was out of sight. A brow perked up at the other’s words though he grinned in response, taking no offense to the comment. “Fancy yourself a ladies’ man, eh?” Again his eyes flashed, this time directed towards Salster before he continued. ”Mortal women are of no concern to me… Good for fulfilling my lust, but other than that, meh.” He stated plainly, adjusting his position so that he was now leaning forward with both elbows on the table, clawed hands cradling his chin. ”Normally I simply go by Mirix by the way.” Was his ambiguous answer to what his name was, which was accompanied by a short laugh. |

Salster was starting to feel slightly uncomfortable. Despite the buzz he was getting from the ale and his generally good mood at the moment, the demon's responses were starting to . . . worry him. His first response, calling mortals a foolish bunch, was only barely noticed. Salster assumed it was just the same as most people saying "people are all idiots" and was nothing to worry about. However, in combination with his most recent response on human women . . . Well, it was slightly disconcerting. "A ladies man? Me? No, no. Red skin isn't a big turn-on for mortal women, it turns out, and you'd be surprised how few women have red skin themselves," Salster joked, purposefully trying to hide his discomfort. Perhaps the ale was, instead of making him feel better, just making him paranoid. That was probably it. Of course! That would explain it! But still . . . "Mirix, hm? I see. You say it as if you go by it as an alias, though, not as a birth-name." Salster laughed to show he was joking around, though the cat-eared demon's choice of words was indeed . . . strange. "Though, it wouldn't be the first time. In fact, I chose my own name. The name my parents gave me has been . . . long forgotten . . ." Salster trailed off as he began to think he had revealed too much. He set his ale aside, deciding it would be best not to muddle his head any further. "So, no taste for mortal women, though? And I assume no demoness of your own? That's a shame. Ah, can't say I blame you though. I had an interest in a demon woman back in . . . my old home. Never quite got at 'er though." Again, Salster laughed, hoping to distract the demon opposite him from his previous comments. He couldn't have him get suspicious of Salster's own suspicions. "But I've nothing against mortals, really. What is it about them that seems to have you so upset with them, though?" |

Mirix was ignorant of the other’s discomfort. He was too caught up in his own feelings; he amusement of being able to cause that woman to tremble with fear, the pleasure of having taken what he what he wanted from the couple upstairs. His eyes narrowed, life was good. Of course this inner distraction was forgotten when the hell spawn in his company began speaking once more. Mirix smiled, appreciative of the other’s sense of humor. He’d hate to have to spend time with one who was boring and uninteresting. “Aww… I’m sure that’s not true!” He countered with a playful smirk. “Women like to think they have a knight in shining armor coming to save them from stuff. Plus they like danger. You’ve a dangerous air about you, what with the red eyes and all. You’re the complete package.” He laughed then, pleased. As Salster spoke about the demon’s name, he did nothing aside from sit there with an enigmatic grin on his face. He wasn’t going to explain any of that in detail, or at all. A little mystery was never a bad thing. Mirix caught everything that Salster said however. His eyes gained a curious glint in them when he began to talk about his past, how he didn’t know his true name before trailing off. He seemed rather, well, sad, about it from what Mirix could tell and he assumed that was a touchy subject so he wouldn’t push the subject. Instead he just went right along with his company’s conversational deflection. “I like to think of myself as a free agent. To be tied down to one person… That would be… Well… Torture!” He was exaggerating of course; he didn’t find monogamy to be all that revolting truly, but he did know full well that it wasn’t for him and he wouldn’t attempt to abide by it. The demon snorted at Salster’s question regarding mortals. Did he not know already? Was their flaws invisible to him? He was tempted to question this, but decided against it, assuming instead that simply being around those lesser creatures for too long and not seeing them as the filth they were had dulled the hell spawn’s senses. Pity. He sighed, eyes hardening. “What about them?” He repeated, sounding slightly disgusted and surprised that the other needed an explanation. The demon’s voice was rough and made no attempt to hide the contempt he felt for the lesser beings. “Heh… Mortals, of the score of fine qualities they imagine they have and are vain of, they really possess hardly one. Always ready to claim what they haven’t got and regard themselves as gold when they are only brass.” He paused, but only to scoff and spit at the floor, his eyes alight with silver. Mirix opened his mouth to say more, but stopped, the silver glow fading away as a small, toothy grin played on his face. “Let’s not ruin your evening with such talk about them. Tell me, what adventures have you gone on while walking this plane, Salster? Surely you must have tales of great conquest.” |

Salster was becoming even more uneasy. This demon clearly had a grudge against mortals, and it typically didn't take much for a lone demon to be willing to kill. Could Salster trust this man for long? Could he even trust him now? How many men could he have killed? Or be planning to kill? Salster shook his head and attempted to push the thoughts from his mind. "Adventures? Well, I'm not quite the adventuring sort, really. I've had my bouts with mortal criminals, demon criminals, and soldiers of a few varieties, but I never like to do it too often. For the most part, I ask questions of people who seem . . . in the know. There's a particular man I've been wishing to know more about. He died some time ago, but his history is rather important to me. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the man I'm trying to learn about. I don't know how he died, his name, his appearance, nothing. As you can guess, it's not a very successful quest." Salster did not mention, though, that the man he asked questions about was himself. He had nothing to go by other than a few guesses he had gotten from the other Hell-Spawn and the Hell Lord himself. Those and the statement from the angels of judgment, who gave him his best clue. The angels had said that he had been a very, very good person in his lifetime. Someone well-deserving of heaven. So, that was all Salster had to rely on. He looked into the histories of those who sacrificed themselves for cities, but their deaths did not match up with the time he died. He had to find a very righteous person who died on the same day as him, and hope that might have been who he was. He had gone to many mages in an attempt to have a spell give him his memory back, but never to any avail. "What about you, though, friend? You look like an exploring sort yourself. Done anything of interest in your time?" |

Mirix listened to Salster speak, obviously very much interested in what he had to say. The red male had the demon’s complete attention as he looked at him in the expectant manner as a child awaiting the reading of their favorite story. His mind was jumping ahead of him with imaginative stories of great slaughter, destruction and mayhem; things that he liked and wanted to hear about. He couldn’t get enough of stories in which humans were the victims or being caused anguish but quite frankly and upsettingly, he hadn’t heard much of any since being here. What he actually got from Salster was something completely different, though he wasn’t necessarily disappointed. Mirix nodded at the mention of fights with various people and demons alike; he had them too, though for the most part he preferred targeting the civilian types. They always seemed so much more caught off guard than those who were well versed in the art of battle. Mirix leaned forward a little when Salster mentioned that what he was really working on was finding out more information on some mysterious man. That perked his interest as he rather enjoyed stalking and hunting things. “Oh? Is it your father? Or brother?” He asked, curiously, a wide, almost anxious grin on his face. “Surely you must know something about this man. A starting clue or something. Otherwise finding him would be quite impossible I assume.” Though he was apparently quite interested in Salster’s quest, when asked what his own agenda was, Mirix hesitated, letting his hand drop and backing off a bit, his previous excitement vanishing in an instant. “Me?” He hummed, his eyes dropping to the table as he began slowly digging a small hole in the wooden surface with the claw on his index. “The reason I’m here is to keep tabs on someone… Just to make sure they don’t do anything incredibly stupid like they’ve done in the past.” He told Salster slowly, an uncharacteristic softness appearing for only a brief instant in his eyes. ”Eh, other than that time consuming commitment, just exploring the world! Haven’t been to many places just yet, but I’m hoping to change that soon.” |

"Is that so?" Salster responded as Mirix explained his reason for being here. "Well, Mirix, you surprise me. You've obviously no love for the mortal kind, why bother tracking someone? Are you this one's guardian of sorts?" Salster was honestly curious. Not only was he wondering if this demon was some sort of bodyguard, but the truth would help him understand just how dangerous this Mirix character was, if he was dangerous at all. "No, no, I'd doubt that. But then again, you did say you're trying to make sure they don't do anything stupid. Enlighten me, then, as to exactly why it is you are intent on guarding this person." Salster wanted to know as much as possible. His good mood was dissipating quickly, and suspicion had replaced any buzz the ale had given him. He still thought Mirix could be dangerous, and needed to find it out, quickly. |

“You assume too much, Salster…” The demon cooed slowly, his head down, eyes slanted to the side to glance at the patrons of another table as his claw stopped its rhythmic digging into the wooden surface. There was a very slight grin on his face, though it was not nearly as large as usual. It was clear that the question had caused something somewhat heavy to weigh upon his mind. “It isn’t a mortal that I keeping my eye on.” He finally revealed in a sighing breath, pausing for several moments after that, staring into space now. Mirix shook his head, both brows rising as he returned his attention to the man in front of him. “I won’t go into the gory details of the matter; it isn’t nearly as interesting as it might initially appear.” He shrugged, beginning to clean the wooden scraps from under the claw he used to dig into the table. The demon then leaned back his chain once more, stretching his arms back above his head while balancing the chair on the two back legs. He remained leaned back like that for a little bit, his eyes half lidded as he regarded Salster carefully, the predatory grin returned to his lips. “Perhaps we can help each other…” He mused aloud, having not forgotten about the red one’s reason for being here. Mirix didn’t actually intend for the other to help him with his issue; it was more of a task that he felt only he could accomplish. “Dead things are my specialty actually… If you could perhaps give me a bit more information on the subject, I might be able to find something out for you.” |

Salster tried to keep his expression calm as the demon made his proposition. While he was slightly excited by the idea that he might get a bit closer to his old identity, but he doubted the demon would actually be able to help him. He was also still suspicious, and needed to get a better understanding of this person. "Well, there isn't much information I can give you. All I know is that he was very righteous, someone who did either many good deeds, or one extremely good deed. He died about fourteen years ago, and I have a reason to believe he died a young man, though I don't know exactly how old. Other than that, I'm clueless. It's nothing to go on, and it's been a hopeless task since I started. Still, I refuse to simply give up. This man's history is . . . far more important to me than anything else. Besides, I have all the time in the world, don't I?" Salster tried to laugh casually. "So, how is it you think you can aid me? And what is it you want in return?" |

Mirix watched Salster with interest as he waited for a response. There was something restrained about him at the moment, as if he was holding something back, but the demon paid it little attention. The subject was much too light, as he saw it anyway, to really care about whether or not he was getting the whole truth. When the red one began speaking, he listened carefully, rather curious about the man’s situation and quest. “Mmmm, I wouldn’t say that….” The demon mused once Salster finished, eyes shifting to look at the wall across from him as he began thinking about things, continuing to speak as his mind wandered. “Though time may not affect you personally, it most certainly affects mortals.” He was of course assuming that the person the one across from him was looking for was human, or at the very least mortal. If this proved to be true, it would be imperative to find out who they were as soon as possible. “The mortal mind is a fragile thing, their memories easily warped and degraded as life continues on. It is because of that I would say time is not on your side, Salster.” Of course there were a lot of variables he wasn’t getting into at the moment. Whether the person in question had been renowned or not, the general location of their life and death, things like that. “Now as for me specifically!” Mirix gleefully stated, eyes glinting with excitement as he rubbed his crimson clawed hands together eagerly. “I have some… Talents… That may be useful in tracking down your dead target.” He couldn’t help but chuckle at that, amused by his own inward thoughts on the subject. ”Aside from that… Two heads are better than one, wouldn’t you say?” |

He was right, of course. He didn't really have much time. He had already lost enough of it in the 14 years he had wasted searching futilely. He was losing time, and his chances were slimming with each passing moment, let alone year. Again, though, he spoke so . . . angrily . . . towards mortals. Salster had a wrenching feeling in his gut that, if he was still working directly for the Hell Lord rather than searching here, he would eventually be hired to "take care of" this demon. "Well," Salster chuckled as he spoke, "not all would agree with that, oddly enough. I've seen some strange things in my travels," he let his laughter become more prominent, but quickly quieted down. "Well, if you have these talents, I'd love to hear of them. In fact, I'm sure many would like to hear of them, but I'm already here, so let us stick with that, shall we?" |

“Mmmm… To each his own thoughts, I say.” The demon waved his hand dismissively. He had been picking up on Salster’s personality and current attitude as their encounter continued on and it was becoming clear that the one across from him did not share the silver haired one’s outlook on life. When Salster said he would like to hear of his talents, a particularly feline grin came to Mirix’s face. He hesitated before actually responding, instead opting to simply stare at the other intensely for some time, apparently thinking about something. When he finally did decide to speak, it wasn’t to spill his secrets regarding his ability however. ”I’m sure you would love to hear about this ability of mine… It is wondrous, I assure you. However, it’s not really something for me to describe….” The demon’s eyes never left Salster’s own; never blinked, and seemed to become even more intense and focused. ”To make use of it though… I’d need to be at the place where this person died, or to have an object or another person that was with them when they died…. It’s all very complicated and boring to explain, but the results are sure to be worth your while.” |
