Fear had stalked her at every turn. It had tortured her childhood, taken her mother, killed and scared away friends and acquaintances, and even a kind stranger or two. Fear had chased her all over the world, for she could stay nowhere without endangering everyone around her. That was why she had come to the forests of Soto. Not to become a recluse in the forests, no she did not have the strength to do that and it would solve nothing. She had come to Soto to see if someone could help her to be freed from her curse. The Temple of Nature had sounded promising. Surely a place that honored all the spirits of nature, may have someone so deeply connected with it that they would know why she had been born in such a way. That had been her hope in coming here; but now she would just be happy to be at the temple before the sun finished setting. Yume had been travling slowly and cautiously the whole way. Sleeping as little as possible, and staying in her well lit tent whenever she could. However, today she had made a mistake. She had reached the city of Madrid, and asked for directions to the temple. She had tried to follow them; but no longer on the main roads, she had gotten lost in the forests as the day wore on. Now, darkness was approaching and the sleep deprived woman was beginning to fear she would not make it to any place of safety. Her lanterns were out of oil, she was out of torches, all she had was a single candle remaining. She had not stocked up on supplies in Madrid, for she had been told that the temple was always well lit. The sky was now a fiery orange, and every direction she looked, Yume was certain it was all the same. She was walking at a quicker pace, her sandaled feet crunching leaves and twigs as she moved. Her opalescent eyes stayed on the skyline; but as brightness in the sky sank, so too did her spirits. Soon, she knew it was too late but continued to mutter that the sun was probably still setting. Her rush soon slowed to cautions walking once more as twilight hung all around her. Yume lit her lone candle and used it to guide her way. However the wind continued to blow it out. She began to tremble and bite her lip in nervousness as she moved along in the dark. Trying to focus on finding the light of the temple; but knowing that at any moment her fears would get the better of her, and one of them would come to life. An owl hooted, and insect chirped, a bat fluttered by. The moon was only a waning sliver tonight. Hardly any light to guide a path as she continued to move. Yume fought to ignore the image sin her mind; but they were coming. Soon enough, visions of arms grabbing hold of her continued to appear in her eyes. With trembling fingers, with her last match, she re-lit her candle hoping for a moments peace. However, just as the little flame was about to transfer from match to candle, a strong wind blew, a tree groaned, and Yume knew what she would see when the light came. The candle slowly grew brighter, the pool of light stretching out, and there it stood. The tree with a face and branches like arms. It moved for her, she screamed, dropped her candle and ran. Yume did not need to turn around to know what was transpiring at her back. The sound of upturned earth and snapping vines let her know that the tree had uprooted itself and was following her. It’s bark had been black, like ebony, and it had two notches inside which green sparks of light acted like eyes. The tree thundered through the brush behind her, knocking it’s inanimate brethren aside as it moved. “HEEEELLLLP! ANYONE PLEASE! HEEEEELLLLP!” she screamed knowing it was futile but not knowing what else to do. Yume could not fight an ent with a dagger. She had no time to make her shield, and no means of fighting for herself. Her only other option was to run until sunrise, and her tired body could not deliver such a heavy request. Sure enough as she tired to run through the forest, her foot snagged on the root of another tree and she went down. Skidding forward on the leaves in the dirt she felt the wind knocked out of her lungs and tears stream down her cheeks. She would give anything to get out of this alive, to be away from these horrors finally. Anything…. |

The necromancer had spent her day at the Temple of Nature. She went there often, for reasons better known to herself. Others who frequented the Temple tended to simply leave her to her own devices. When she had first started visiting, there were a few people who had attempted to make conversation or get to know Sphynx, but she never reciprocated, and it didn’t take long for them to back off. Most people didn’t even know her name. She was just known as the woman who lived in the forest, as the Temple had graciously allowed her to build her home not too far from there. But she found the Temple to be a peaceful place, and after her discussion with Tsuki and battle with Andromalius, the peace was welcome. Her shoulder and collar bone were still a bit stiff, as she hadn’t really done any healing on them until the day after they had broken. After having spent half of a day merely sitting in one spot in the Temple, allowing the calm seep into her, she decided it was probably time to leave. Now that the sun was setting, she made her way back to the small shack in the woods that she affectionately called home. She had given Tsuki free reign of her house, though she wasn’t sure if he had yet arrived. Anyway she only needed to pick up a few things before heading to Ashoka. The walk wasn’t a long one, but it was peaceful enough. Few other people tended to travel that direction through the forest anymore, not since she had set up shop there. This suited her just fine, as she didn’t typically give guests a very warm welcome. As she walked closer to her home, the silence was broken by the sound of someone crashing through the underbrush of the forest. Sphynx sighed; her hopes for a typical, peaceful evening were quickly slipping away. A scream broke through the trees, and the woman stopped her trek and listened. Someone was calling for help. She wasn’t the type of offer assistance without knowing that she would receive something in return, but at the same time she didn’t like how the quiet of the forest had been broken. Her steps took her on a slightly different path now, towards the commotion. She saw the tree creature first, creaking its way towards a girl who had fallen to the ground. Sphynx sighed again, but wasted no time in casting a pillar of flame between the girl and the tree creature. It didn’t last more than a couple of seconds, as she wanted to use it as more of a distraction than anything else. The ent stopped its movement towards the girl and instead slowly turned around to face the necromancer. She looked almost bored as she sent her magic out, trying to decide the best way to deal with the creature. She didn’t dare light the moving tree on fire, as she didn’t want it spreading to the surrounding forest. But as she examined the tree more fully, she realized that this wasn’t a creature that belonged in this realm. She had no idea where such a creature had come from, or how it made its way into being, but its presence was not very comforting. The creature stalked closer, but Sphynx merely raised a hand in a commanding way. The creature hesitated, before stopping its movement entirely. The tree merely stood there now, motionless except for the glowing of its green eyes, her magic holding it in place. It would not be able to make a move now except by her own command. Sphynx approached the girl who had fallen on the ground, her brow knit together. “Who are you? Did you call this creature here?” She motioned towards the immovable tree and demanded answers, not even noticing the fallen woman’s fear. |

Yume shielded herself cowering ready to feel the final blow at any second. Instead of the crushing blow at the fists of the tree, a wave of heat rushed over her. Yume opened her eyes in time to see the creature turn and advance on someone else. She felt tremendous guilt weighing on her as the beast moved to destroy someone foolish enough to have intervened. The figure was dark and hard to see. However, Yume did not miss the impossible event that transpired right before her eyes. As the lumbering monster charged down towards the figure, it did something unprecedented. A simple raise of the hand was given it, and the lumbering beast stopped in place. It did not move again; but it's eyes were still glowing in the night. Yume looked up at whoever had done this impossible feat. Opalescent orbs met with icy blue as question were fired at her like arrows loosed from a bow. Yume's head was spinning her understanding of the way things worked being stopped in it's tracks by the simple wave of a hand. She opened her mouth but no words would come out. "How....how did you do that. How is it possible?...What are you?" Yume asked in a mystified state. She could not wrap her mind around the fact that the creature was being commanded by someone else. Dread filled her as she thought of the possibilities. "You...you aren't one of them are you? Have you come to take me away? Has my curse finally caught up with me?...What did I do to deserve this punishment? Why was I born into this fate?" Yume bit her tongue stopping the flood of questions as her eyes brimmed with tears. She was almost certain that this was the case. Some final apparition had called itself to finish what the curse had yet to do. It had stopped the tree beast from killing her, so this figure could pull her into that chilling black her mother had vanished into. Silently, she awaited her fate, knowing there was no way she could escape it now. |

Sphynx had the majority of her focus on the creature, which was interesting indeed. However the moment the child on the ground spoke, her eyes instantly switched targets. The woman on the ground looked frightened, and her eyes had the glassy, sunken look of one who hadn’t slept in days. It seemed like a foolish idea anyway, to be wandering through this part of the forest at night all alone, at least it was foolish for most people to do. The necromancer could do it; most people who found their way through here knew who she was anyway, and those that didn’t soon found out. But then again, she was one of the creatures that lurked through the night, one of the ones told in stories to children who didn’t obey their parents. And unlike the so called ‘Boogeyman,’ Sphynx tended to live up to her reputation. Her eyes narrowed as the girl began to question her. “What am I? Are you serious? What do I look like?” Sphynx sighed in exasperation. Really, was it that difficult to recognize a human being when you saw one? Apparently, for this girl, it was. She moved a bit closer and called forth an orange fireball to hover in the air between and above them. The light from the fire would make it easier for both of them to see, though Sphynx at least liked to think that she saw just fine in the dark. Her hands went to her hips as looked down at the girl. “For one cowering in fear on the ground, you ask a lot of questions. But to answer a few of them, my name is Sphynx, and I am a human, much like yourself I would assume. No, I have not come to take you anywhere, I have no idea what curse you speak of, and I care nothing for the ‘why’ of your birth.” Still controlling the tree creature, she made it slowly turn towards her so she could better examine its features. While it looked fairly normal, for an ent that is, there was something very wrong with the creature that she had yet to place her finger on. Once again the strangeness of the being took up nearly her entire attention. “Now I would really appreciate it if you would answer my previous questions; specifically the one about whether or not you called this creature here.” One thing was for certain; the ent was not born of this world. |

Sphynx... that name carried hints at a far different creature of myth and legend. She had heard the gypsies tell tales of the tricky sphinx and their riddles. Taking a more human guise and using their own mythic power just to play with their food before devouring it. The images that came to her mind, were ones far more terrifying than this tree creature that still stood. As her questions were answered, Yume looked up into the cold eyes of the other. The orange fireball that floated in the air mystified her somewhat and she noticed a faint shudder in the upper branches of the giant tree being. The woman seemed to take almost too much interest in Yume for a moment. She felt like she was being examined through and through by the calculating stare of this phenomenal individual, capable of such amazing power. Sphynx turned back to the tree creature and it moved, startling Yume until she realized it was under the woman's control and was simply being rotated to be better scrutinized. She decided, for now, it would be best to go with the truth. Something in the tone and presence of this woman told her it would be unwise to lie. Swallowing hard, Yume tried to answer the question. "I, I didn't call it...but it's my fault it is here yes... I didn't mean too, honest. I...I'm curse. Fears and nightmares come spilling from my mind into reality and hurt all those who try to protect me from them... you are the first one to stop such a beast without a long battle ending in it's death....I've never seen anything like this... how have you stopped it? How long do I have before it will try to kill me again? How can I repay you for sparing me from my curse?" Despite the unsettling feeling she had from the woman, she owed her thanks, and wished to know how she had been able to stop the beast where no one else could. |
