Name – Yume Makasta Age – 18 Gender – Female Alignment – Chaotic Good Social Class – Though of noble birth, she is now a low commoner street rat. Occupation – Fortune Teller Race – Human? (The taint of demon power is prevalent, but there is something more) Weapons – All she has to defend herself with is a 9” dagger she was given long ago, everything else she better find as she goes. Any other weapon she comes across, she often sells for food. Physical Appearance – I’ll never forget the day I saw that woman. A simple palm reader on the surface; but even in appearance she was so much more. While not the most fetching creature I had ever seen, she was at least recognizably female. Her body was thin from lack of food she was not quite skin and bone; but rapidly approaching that state. Her skin was pale like one who had been inside for too many long winters. She spoke with a voice rasping from too little water. As I drew closer I could see her face. It too was thin; and pale. Here eyes were bloodshot as if she had not slept in days; but within the pools of blood red were two opalescent orbs. However, those orbs still seemed to bear a lethargic hopelessness. She removed her hood as I got closer and I was able to see the blood-crimson hair tied back into a braid that disappeared behind her back only for coils to be noticed on the ground beside her. I was certain that if she were to stand it would still brush the ground. My attention was not as focused on her hair as much as it was the indigo orb imbedded in her forehead. It looked to be a deep indigo on first glance but as I looked closer I noticed an inner light of flickering reds and the occasional green. It was captivating. The stone embedded in her forehead was the largest one on her person but not the only one and it did distract from the scar on her cheek, and the one across her left eyes, as well as the several piercings in her ears. The woman had more of those stones, at a smaller size, in both of her hands, able to be seen on the palm and back of each hand as if the orbs had some how been rammed through, and she had one each on her feet, finally one smaller one set in her navel. Surely these stones had to be magical. The tattoos and markings all around them made it apparent they were significant, however something about the poor state of the fortune teller’s apparent health, and her many scars, told me that asking of them may lead to more than I bargained for. Still I ignored the signs… I should have stayed away. -This was taken from the diary of a man still locked in asylum. Personality –Yume is a quiet individual. Her appearance alone shows she holds many secrets, her demeanor only proves this. Yume is reserved and cautious. She keeps everyone at arms length. Never lingering too long in any one city and trying to traverse only in neutral lands as often as possible. The fortune teller is a firm believer in spirits. What seems odd is that for one so independent, as dusk draws near she is clearly not a woman without fear. She grows nervous, always casting an eye over her shoulder. Her tent is never seen without light and those who have been inside see that it is filled with dream catchers and some other items believed to ward off evil spirits. She has been alone for a long time and bears the weight of her curse in solitude. Knowing there are answers somewhere to what and why she is; but without any means to look for them. Instead she continues to read the fortunes of others so that, perhaps, they can escape a fate like hers and better their lives. Still, the loneliness grows and sometimes she will venture into a highly populated place, staying awake all night in a place like a well lit tavern, just to be near other people for a while, then when the morning sun finally rises she will return to her tent and sleep. History – There exists, in many stories, from books found within the void between the worlds, of a hell dimension known as Lerfeor. In opposition to Lerfeor, there is a shining place of rest and freedom known as Chromiel. Those who know of Lerfeor and Chromiel, also know of a place in between. A plane that exists within all other planes perfectly intertwined with reality, and that is the plane of dreams. Lerfeor was created to be an entire realm used to seal away an evil like no other, a demon god. Along with him were the massive hordes of his darkness locked as well within that place. For as long as any existence can remember, Chromiel has existed to combat any attempt that Lerfeor has made to surface into any plane of existence beyond it’s own. The constant struggle of light and dark. One of these stories tells of how the demon god, in his vast power, managed to find the one door out of his world besides the sealed gate. By entering the plane of dreams and filling it with his foul power, he had given himself a gateway into all worlds! He knew the first place he would have to strike would be Chromiel, before they would have a chance to seal his one gateway out. The demongod’s dark power tainted the realm so that the fowler side of un-reality was increased and thus the Nightmare’s realized what was going on. As the equine guardians of the realm of dreams tried to quell the uprising in the material planes, the demons were given their chance. With only one shot, the demongod consumed a vast number of souls within his realm and melded them with the forces of the dream world so that they could not be banished into Lerfeor again. Then ordered this new magnificent demon to strike at the angels of Chromiel. One angel saw this threat and knew that it would be impossible to slay. For the world of dreams is infinite, the beast would be able to re-surface and strike over and over. The only way to stop the creature would be to contain it. Doing just thus, the angel used their body to imprison the demon, by allowing the demon to try to possess them. The full might of the angel was enough to contain the demon; but not eternally. So it was decided that such a thing could not be held in Chromiel, the only way to weaken them both was to sever them from the two mystic realms. The angel, turned prison, was cast into the material world so that Chromiel would not be in danger from the demon and would be able to continue to fight Lerfeor, without a looming second threat… Yume Makasta was born to a rich and noble family. When she was born, the disfigured girl was still loved by both her parents. Unaware why their poor child was born with these stones protruding from her body, and with such pale skin, they still chose to love and care for the girl. They dismissed the fact that the child would always cry every night, to possible discomfort from these defects; but no healer could remove them or ease the childs suffering. They often assured the parents that the stones were not the cause; but did not know what was. The crying only lessened some as the child grew older. When Yume was six, she would awaken the house every night screaming of monsters in her closet, and creatures in the dark. It was by this time, her father was fed up with the girl’s perpetual fear. He ordered that her light be snuffed out that night and not replaced until the morning sun rose. Noone was to enter the room until morning. Sure enough, that night she began to scream like all other nights. She pleaded and begged for help with such desperation that it sent chills down the spines of all who were in the house; but no one acted until a second sound was heard. A multi-tonal unworldly screech! They burst in the door in time to see a beast of indescribable horror attempting to drag the child beneath the bed. Two attendants were killed in the struggle; but Yume was saved. Now afraid of the curse that seemed bent on their child’s life. The family began to spend every expense on wielders of magic to try and save and heal their daughter. All tried, but none succeeded. And fewer and fewer would come for the death toll around the girl was rising. Stories of abominations rising from the dark to take her, and striking at those around the girl spread. Finally, one night, Yume was awake, in her room with the lights on. She was protesting being put to bed as she always did; but her mother assured her that the lights would be on and the guards would keep them safe. Yume cried and clung tightly to her other pleading that the drapes be drawn. Her room being in a high tower, her mother assured her that no harm would come from the window and that the cool air would do the girl good. Yume pleaded with her mother that she not let her go not even to open the window but her mother insisted that all would be well. She set down the little girl for a moment and turned to open the window. Yume screamed and all watched in horror as a tremendous arm burst through the window and ripped her mother through it. Her screams fading into what was described as “a void of the blackest darkness”. No body was found but there was little time to search for the creature that the arm belonged to was still clinging to the side of the tower. The beast laid siege killing tens of people dwelling within before it vanished when the morning sun arose. Yume’s father was at a loss. Buried in grief, he knew that his wife would never wish harm be brought to her child; but could not stand to be near her any longer, and fear of the curse consumed him. He took Yume, disguising his identity, and sold her to work along side gypsies. Lord Makasta, was executed under suspiscion of the murder of his daughter who had suddenly gone missing. But Yume would never discover this. The old fortune teller who had paied for her took the role of her guardian. She used dream catchers, lantern light, and stories of angels slaying demons, to soothe the girl to sleep. As Yume grew, her elderly guardian taught her the ways of the fortune teller and assured her that she saw that Yume had the gift, just like she had. And so the nightmares did not surface for the first few months. However, one night, after a drunken gypsie man had attacked Yume, just barely failing to have his way with her, her shaken nerves awoke the fears of the still young girl. That night, screams awake the camp! A nightmareish beast was after one of their own in their camp! Fighting the creature back, they managed to slay it; but the next night another came. It did not take long to connect the attacks to the strange girl who lived with the fortune teller and so the two were cast from the troupe. The old woman never blamed Yume; but rather helped her to steady her fears enough that once again the child dreamt peacefully. The two were forced to travel on their own from then on. They would try to make a life in one town, eventually, though, Yume’s curse would strike and they would have to move again. It was the night of Yume’s 16th birthday when, her fears struck in tremendous force and without warning. Her mind was filled with visions of absolute horror and the nightmares that appeared before her were still there when she sat up screaming. Awake now, she was certain her time had finally come. The images she had escaped had left her surrounded by hundreds of these demonic nightmares that were all focused on her. However, there was a sound like thunder and a brilliant light. The demons screamed and charged; but seemed to steer away at the last second. Yume had to clamp her eyes shut from the light and when the cries of the evil beasts stopped, she was still alive. When her eyes opened it was to see the tearstained face of the old woman. “I’m sorry child. I was supposed to kill you before this day, to spare you from the fate to come; but I could not. Please forgive me, I can not help you any longer. I pray I made the right decision, please don’t let me down.” the woman’s words echoed in Yume’s ears, and before her eyes the elderly lady seemed to fade away leaving empty clothing, dust and echoes behind. Since then she has been traveling on her own. Struggling to fight and survive against her curse, and to keep anyone else from being dragged to the same terrible fate as her mother, or ripped to pieces by the beasts that come from her fears. She knows they are there, though. Lurking and waiting to emerge, hidden just behind every shadow. This profile has been approved by Sphynx! |
