| Welcome to Elenlond, an original medieval fantasy forum! We're always looking for new, dedicated members. Elenlond is composed of two continents: Soare and Esiria. Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity. But how long will that peace last? Enter Elenlond; Turn the pages and tell your own tale. If you're already a member please log in to your account to access all of our features: |

This announcement is important and should be read by everyone. This hasn't become a problem yet, and I don't foresee it becoming one, but it needs to be put out in the open now. Since many of you are reaching the advanced bracket for your abilities, it is quite relevant. This isn't in the Abilities Tutorial, though I think it's vaguely mentioned. In any case, I seemed to have conceived of this notion independently of the tutorial. I know the implications of the tutorial state that once you hit the advanced bracket, you can floor buildings, are really powerful, etc. etc. This is true, however: if your spells are overpowered based on the number of posts you've made (110 vs. 320), staff members reserve the right to ask you to tone it down until you've reached a higher 'level', ie. have acquired more posts. What this is means is that, within the advanced bracket, you can continue upgrading. For example: if I wanted Shadow to be able to flood an entire continent, I would not be allowed to do that when I hit 80 posts. Instead, it might be acceptable at 300 or 400 posts, when I've clearly been here for a while and haven't abused whatever power I've gained since arriving here. But, say I wanted her to be able to flood a building? 80 posts is acceptable. A small town? 110 posts would be acceptable. An entire city? Probably between 200 and 300 posts would be acceptable. Do you see what I'm saying? This is just an example, and may be considered a little on the extreme side. This is designed to curb godmoding, or attempts at it. I know most, if not all of you, recognize the limits needed for your characters, but there will be people who won't. The point of this is to keep people from reaching 80 posts and being able to wipe out half the site, because, let's face it: that's not fun for anyone. So, in the future, think about how many abilities you have in relation to how long you've been here and such. Do you think the ability will be accepted by the staff, or do you think it's a little overpowered? Also, keep in mind what these spells can do. If you use them on a PC, can it kill their character in one fell swoop? If so, and you don't have the posts/time here to back it up, chances are it's too powerful. If anyone has any comments or concerns, drop me a PM. I will be updating the Tutorial sometime today or tomorrow. ~Shadow |

Another apparent issue that people are having with the abilities is the notion that "I have intermediate ____ to your simple ____" - this is also true for advanced compared to intermediate, or advanced to simple. While I understand this way of thinking, it is not a way I think people should be thinking about these. It is what you DO with your abilities that counts, not necessarily what level they are. This means that it doesn't matter if someone's speed is a step below your hand-to-hand combat, or that their shield only shields against simple abilities. The person you're fighting should still be considered quick on their feet and fast, and you should expect not to hit them every single time; likewise, a shield that shields against simple spells won't completely deflect intermediate or advanced ones, but it will be able to decrease some of the damage done. Levels and detailed descriptions are not used for the purposes of saying that one character overpowers another based on those levels. They are used to keep your character's power level in check, so that you aren't destroying half the forum's landmarks and you've been here for half a day. Therefore, take all of these abilities with a grain of salt. Just because your fire spell might overpower their speed skill in level doesn't mean that you're automatically going to win - they may still be faster than your character, and if they use their abilities to an advantage (dodging a move because they have better speed/reflexes), it's acceptable. When making abilities, don't look at it as a "How can I be uber powerful?", but "How can I make something that will benefit my character, whether powerful or not?" I hope that makes sense. If you have any comments/concerns/questions, drop any one of the staff members a PM. |
