Valerie froze. Temple behind her, town behind her she was standing in front of an old scary looking shack. She bent down low and sniffed the air. It smelt abandoned and just as old as it looked. Slowly creeping forward she came up to the front porch sniffing deeply. Having just come back from the town to see if she could catch anyone leaving, which she had and was extremely full now, she had been on her way back into the forest when she had stumbled on this little..shack. If that's what you could call it. It barely deserved the name Shack because of the look of it. Just abandoned building was more like it. But she got a bad feeling about it. It felt evil. It smelt evil. She slowly stood up and glanced into a small grimy window. There appeared to be some sort of kitchen in there. Backing up carefully she realized someone must still live here. She backed up even quicker, but being her normal clumsy self, fell backwards. She let out an "Omph" as she hit the ground and then jumped back up sniffing the air. It had to be midnight at that time. It was so black, the only light came from the perfectly round full moon directly above her head. She glanced up frightened. When the moon was like this it irritated her skin. Made her skin feel itchy. Seeing as moonlight was just a reflection of the moon. She backed into the shadow of a tree and stood staring at the house. |

The woods had been busy of late. It seemed to her that more and more people found themselves wandering past her humble little abode. It was during times like these, when the weather turned nicer and more people decided to venture into the wilder parts of the world, that she was glad that house wasn’t as obvious as it could be. As it was, few people actually noticed the strange wooden shack for what it actually was, being as the slats that created it blended in so well with the surrounding tree trunks. However she would get the occasional visitor as the more daring ones decided to see who, if anyone, occupied the small cabin. That was generally their mistake. Sometimes she killed them right away, if her mood suited it. Other times she played the part of the lonesome hedgewitch and invited them in for a spell. That spell generally led to their undoing. She liked to play with her prey first, and that was if she was in a good mood. Those who met her when she was vexed met death instantly; though that was likely preferable than the games she liked to play. She had begun to develop a reputation, after all the time she had been there. No proof had ever been found that she had lured anyone to her hut to kill them; indeed she had never had to lure anyone there. If you asked her, they all went the same way as the cat; their curiosity getting the best of them. She let several of them go of course, after the tea and bread and incredibly dull conversation. She had to or else no one would wander through this section of the woods for fear that they were haunted. Those that walked away with their lives were proof that she didn’t kill every person that walked through her doors. But with her reputation as it was, folks were still curious enough, frightened but not quite scared enough to stay away. It gave her ample supply to keep up on her experiments. Lately, however, there had been more passersby than she was accustomed to, and it was beginning to drive her crazy. She liked her peace and was in need of it now that she had other duties to focus on besides her little science experiments. The lack of quiet was perhaps what found her standing beside a filthy bedroom window around midnight. The night was always quieter, simpler, less complicated than the day. She had plans for this evening; there was work to be done. There was a good chance that she would have actually gotten something done that evening as well, had there not been someone creeping towards her abode. Her eyes narrowed the moment she could see the outline of a figure draw ever closer to her home. She watched in a calculating silence as the girl drew closer, only to frighten herself and fall back once again. Sphynx could have laughed at the sight of the clumsy little girl stumbling around her house in the darkness. It would have been a fairly humorous situation, had the circumstances been slightly different. As it was, she considered merely lighting the tree that the girl now hid behind on fire, hoping that the girl would catch up with it. Yet there was something about her terribly pale skin and decent reflexes that halted her. Instead, she went with a more direct approach. The tall woman left the confines of her house and stepped out into the moonlight. Her dark blue hair appeared black among the shadows of the trees, and the pale light only enhanced her own pallid face. She was cloaked in a black robe, which really was a standard for her. Her frame was thin enough, and her robe fitted enough, to clearly show that she wasn’t carrying any weapons, though anyone who knew of her reputation as a necromancer would know that she didn’t need weapons to cause pain. “I know that you are there; there is no use in denying it. Show yourself! And explain why you have traipsed across my front lawn. Didn’t anyone ever tell you that it is impolite to trespass?” She moved no closer, yet her eyes did not once stray from the shadows where the girl was hidden. “I have little patience, so don’t make me wait, and heaven help you if I have to come in there and fetch you out myself!” Her voice was only as loud as it needed to be for one to hear her clearly across such a distance. She didn’t have time to waste if this child ended up being a mere human. |

Valerie jumped and hid back a bit. Until the woman with dark blue hair told her she knew she was there. She slowly crept out and into the moonlight. Her curley hair falling lightly about her shoulders. Her fangs hidden cleverly away. She stepped up to the woman. "I am sorry."She said softly in the dark night that seemed to fold in around them, her voice sounding ten times louder than it should. "I didn't know anyone lived here, I was merely exploring."She said bowing her head slightly. This woman scared her. Of course living on her own to much Valerie didn't know of her reputation. So to her it was just another old woman living alone in a shack in the forests. She stumbled upon them surprisingly often and often had a chat with the woman before going on her way. But this woman scared Valerie to badly. She didn't know who she was, or what she did, but the shack had that dark ominous feeling about it. One that clearly stated, come here and die. She kept her distance from the woman. She didn't know why but she really wanted to run away and not come back. "I am sorry I disturbed you this evening."She said backing away carefully. "I should really be on my way."She said backing up a little quicker. She really hoped the ground was smooth, if not she was sure to fall. |

Sphynx’s bright blue eyes remained fixed on the girl as she slowly made her way out of the woods and into the clearing before her own house. The girl was clearly scared, though Sphynx cared little about that. Scared or not, she still could give answers, and every body had its uses. She stood completely motionless as the girl stammered out her excuses. Sphynx felt a frown forming upon her face as the girl talked. “You didn’t know…” She slowly repeated one important bit of the girl’s ramblings, venom dripping with every word that she spoke. “Do you think ignorance is any excuse?” Her voice grew louder now, biting through the cool, night air. “I should kill you where you stand, burn the flesh from your bones, just because you didn’t know how much of a disturbance your presence really is!” She had the spell all picked out, she even had raised her right hand in the air, ready to cast it, when a small breeze made its way through the clearing. Sphynx froze. Not because of the wind, no, but because of what the wind brought with it…the smell of blood, of vampire. A small smile began to curl her lips as her arms began to lower itself. This one deserved something else entirely, something very different, now that she knew her for what she truly was. “On second thought, why don’t you come inside?” Her voice was suddenly sugary sweet as she gestured past herself and into the house. The girl was already backing away, but Sphynx could change that. A large, black panther slinked out of the woods and placed herself between the vampire and the trees she was backing into. As if to emphasize her point, Pyra let a low growl escape her lips, as if to say that there was no going that way…unless the vampire wished to get mauled. |

Valerie froze when she held out her hand, threatening to burn her skin off her bones. When she turned around she saw...a panther? Growling at her in the woods. No running away that way apparently. She glanced to her left and right but realized if the Panther could get behind her so quickly it could get in front of her anyway. She turned around slowly and looked up at the lady. "Ok."She said trembling. For one she had just threatened her and now she was offering her inside. Which meant she was probably going to kill her in there. Which scared her really bad. She would have to fight for her life if anything bad happened in there. She slowly walked up to the house and stepped up to the door. "Ok."She said looking scared as she slipped past her and stepped into the house her back turned to the lady. She looked around and then spun around to face the lady again. |

Sphynx stepped aside as the girl walked past her, across the porch, and into her kitchen. She followed at her own pace, even waiting several seconds for Pyra to catch up, and the pair of them entered the small hut one after the other. Sphynx shut the door silently behind her before turning back towards her guest once more. She looked the girl up and down again, not saying a single word, before walking about the room. Firstly she walked to each of the windows and closed the begrimed fabric curtains so that no one would be able to see inside. Then she closed the door to the bedroom; the only other door leading out of this room. Once that was finished, she walked over to the fireplace, which already had a fire burning in it even though the night was warm enough as it was. The top of the fireplace had a large, flat surface and already had a teapot sitting upon it. “Would you care for some tea?” She picked up the smoking teapot with her bare hand and poured herself a cup of the steaming hot, thick, dark red liquid. She didn’t wait for an answer but instead just poured another cup and set both of them down on the table. She took one chair for herself and motioned towards the other girl to take the other without even giving her another glance. The overlarge panther paced around the room a few times before settling herself underneath the table at her mistress’s feet. She took a sip of the scalding scarlet liquid before finally giving any attention to the girl before her. A vampire could be a valuable ally for one who deals as often as she does with the dead; even one as fragile as this one seemed. She sighed heavily and hoped that she wasn’t wasting her time; well, if she found that she was she could always kill the girl. “My name is Sphynx, and I am a necromancer. Now, why don’t you tell me who you are and why you have come here.” |

Valerie felt her heart freeze when the door closed behind her. Then the girl started to close the curtains, the doors to the room, and picked up a teapot. Slowly taking a seat at the table she looked around the small room. The panther caught her attention and she stared at it her mouth coming open slightly to show her fangs. She shut her mouth quickly. "My name..is Valerie Strong.."She said slowly. "I was, well I was hunting when I stumbled upon you're house."She said softly her eyes fixed on the woman called Sphynx. "I really didn't mean to intrude."She said her eyes flickering towards the door. Looking at the woman she blinked a few times. This woman scared her. She seemed to think she was some sort of threat, if not a threat then someone to be used. Valerie wished she had the guts to stand up for herself, but she knew that she would have to do what this woman asked her if she wanted to live. Blinking a few times she looked around the room, her eyes taking in the closed curtains, the other door to the other room, the door out of the house. The panther. She picked up her mug carefully and took a sip. Gulping she gasped slightly. The heat scalded her throat. She wasn't quite sure what it was, she hadn't had tea in so many years she quite forgot what it was. |

The show of her fangs confirmed Sphynx’s guess, even if the fangs were meant more for Pyra than her. She took another sip of from the teacup in front of her, listening to the girl’s tale. Her expression did not change very much, though her eyes narrowed slightly before returning to a more normal look. Valerie’s gasp brought the small hint of a smile on Sphynx’s features. She thought the temperature and taste were perfect, though it probably didn’t suit most. It was a dark, thick mixture of dragon’s blood leaves and pomegranate seeds that turned out both sweet and bitter when mixed. She never added anything else to it, though many people added honey and lemon to curb the bitterness. Sphynx set her own cup down upon the table and gave the girl a hard look. “Your intention doesn’t really matter that much to me. You are intruding. You trespassed on my land, and hunting on someone else’s land is greatly frowned upon. Now answer me honestly, did you kill anything while you were on my land?” Part of her actually hoped that the girl had killed something, anything. It would be very easy to take payment for whatever prey she had found, whether it was human or something else. Everything that lived on her land, in her opinion, in a way belonged to her. If the vampire wanted to feed while in this part of the forest, then she would have to pay up. |

Valerie stared at the lady across the table from her. She was somehow attracted to the mixture in front of her though and glanced down. She could taste the blood, but something else was in there messing it all up. Something she hadn't had a taste of since she was human, but now that she had she was happy she didn't eat normal food. "Erm..I think I killed a deer off on the other side of this clearing."She said absentmindedly stirring the tea. It attracted and repelled her and she didn't know what to think of it. Glancing up at the lady and then back down at the tea she bit her lip revealing her fangs without meaning to. |

Sphynx emitted a sigh when the girl mentioned the deer, muttering almost to herself. “You think or you did? There is a big difference there.” She took the girl to mean that she had indeed killed an animal on her land, which told her that the girl was probably one of those irregular vampires who somehow thought it noble not to eat human blood. She didn’t understand why they chose to deny their nature, but she tried not to think about it too much either. She could really care less. She trained her gaze back upon the girl as she considered repayment. It was probably only the blood that was taken, and Sphynx could probably go and find the remainder of the animal if necessary, though the wolves might have already gotten to it by now. “In exchange for the creature that you killed on my land, I demand blood; human blood in equal amount to what was taken from the deer. It is the only fair repayment.” Fair it was, and her opinion the girl was getting off easy. She hadn’t even asked for a life, though if the girl had been the type to consume human blood, she would have asked for her own life. The experiments she had in mind revolved around vampires who consumed the lives of other humans, not animals. |

Valerie stared at the lady. "Well that's not to hard...I usually you know...drink their blood, what do you want it in?"She asked slowly. "Like a glass vial? I didn't drink that much."She said shaking her head. "I have a...bad reputation in town at the moment and got to hungry to consider going in there!"She said feeling a small smile twitch her lips. "So I killed a deer, I'm terribly sorry about that, I didn't realize that anyone claimed this land!"She said happy to have gotten away with her life. The fact that all she had to do was bottle up some of her next kill and give it to this lady made her happy. She smiled and looked a bit more relaxed. She even took another sip of the ruined tea. Focusing on the Dragon blood instead of the pomegranate juice. She smiled and set her cup down carefully. |

She stared blankly at the child sitting in front of her. Oh she did seem so young and naive. “A vial? No, no, no, my dear, you misunderstand me. You took the life of a creature on my land. I expect a life in return. I want the entire contents of a human’s circulatory system. You may as well throw in their heart as well; just so that I know that you did indeed kill them.” She leaned back in the chair and began drumming her fingernails on the tabletop. Was it really that difficult to understand a simple instruction? Of course, there was another way… She flashed a wicked grin and abruptly stopped her tapping fingers. “Unless you wish to trade your own life for the one you have taken. I generally give that as an option, but since no one has taken me up on it yet; well I simply stopped saying it over the decades.” She shrugged casually as she waited the girl to make her choice. It seemed a simple decision to Sphynx. She had killed enough humans that it would have been a breeze for her to pick that option. But for some reason she had a feeling that killing a human would not be as easy for the vampire as it would be for herself. |

Valerie shrugged. "I'd rather keep my life."She said smiling at the lady. She didn't seem that bad. No, not at all. Smiling still she bowed her head. "Would you just like me to bring the entire body here?"She asked absentmindedly taking another sip of the tea. She made a face and put it back down but then picked it up and took another drink. "Then you'll know for sure that I killed it."She said looking around the room like she was bored. Killing a human? How fascinating, she did it everyday. It wouldn't be hard, it was the one thing she had actually managed to get down pretty good in her few years as a Vampire. Looking at the girl again she ran her fingers in circles on the table top and leaned forward. "I mean, I could just get what you want, and then help ya take it apart if you need."She said looking at her. "Or just take it apart there and give it to you here."She said shrugging and leaning back again. "Either way."She said watching the lady. Sure she had a scary demeanor and a scary house, and a big scary cat thing. But she wasn't that scared of the lady herself. She just seemed like the type of person who liked humans dead. Oh well. She crossed her fingers and laid her hands on her lap waiting. |

She nodded as the girl made up her mind to keep her life instead throwing it away. That was what she would have guessed the child would do; everyone else does. “I thought as much. Most people seem to enjoy their lives.” She didn’t always understand why. Some people lived on the streets and dug through garbages to get all of their meals; why would anyone want to live like that? She figured that if she ever fell that far she’d just off herself. Sphynx felt her eyes widen at Valerie’s request. “Bring the body back here? Why the hell would I want a dead body lying around my house implicating me in the murder of a child? What a completely ridiculous idea.” Her expression grew more confused as the vampire droned on. What was that girl talking about? Where did she come up with such asinine thoughts? “Take it apart? What the hell are you suggesting here?” She slammed on fist down on the table, feeling her other hand curl into a fist. A deep breath reined in her anger unnaturally quick, and she gave a slow smile instead. The expression on her face turned thoughtful as she considered the offer she had made to Valerie. It didn’t quite seem fair yet; and Sphynx always tried her best to get what she deserved out of life. “You know, the creatures on this land are practically children to me. So make sure that whoever you kill is a child as well; with a mother and a father. Someone, I don’t know, under seven?” That shouldn’t be too difficult for a vampire, apparently such creatures had greater than normal strength and speed. |

Valerie looked seriously confused at her sudden anger. "How else am I going to get a heart?"She asked staring at her. "If I don't take apart the body, how am I going to get the blood out?"She asked frowning. "A child?!" She said standing up. "Why must there be the mother and father as well?! I thought I was only paying for one life!"She exclaimed staring at the lady. Who knows, maybe she should just run for it, or kill this lady and run for it. It would work, but then she remembered the panther thing. Sitting back down slowly she stared at the lady. Staring at her she took another sip of her drink. She was very confused. First she tells her to get one person, give her the blood, then she adds the heart, and now it was three people? A child and their mother and father?! What was this ladies problem? She didn't kill out of debt, she killed to survive and she had never killed a family before, or even a child. She kept those alive. They would grow up one day, have a future. But killing an innocent?! She wouldn't do it! No way no how. "I say, I give you the life I owe..."She said crossing her fingers and leaning forward. "I can give you a child, but not the mother and father, I only owe one life, not three."She said looking at her seriously. |

“I don’t care how you get the heart. That is your concern, not mine.” Her patience was swiftly running out. She could not believe that she had to explain so many things and in so many different was until the girl understood her. Already she had given her more chances than she normally did. She closed her eyes and placed her head in her hands. She thought she had made herself perfectly clear, and yet this child still did not properly understand. “I am not asking for more than one life! I only want the child, just make sure that it is one who has two parents. I don’t want their lives as well. I am not an unreasonable person, I just demand what is owed to me!” She felt her voice rising, and she made no effort to conceal her anger and frustration. “You know what, I’m done. I don’t have nearly enough patience to have to deal with you!” Her anger returned, and when she stood the chair behind her flew to the ground. The panther crawled out from under the table as quickly as she could, which wasn’t exactly easy considering her large size. The large cat turned towards the vampire and bared her teeth, ever so slowly stalking towards the girl. She didn’t intend on actually killing or even attacking Valerie; she knew that Sphynx would want that honor if the girl was stupid enough to stay around much longer. With a wave of one hand Sphynx cast a large ball of flames that hovered in the air between herself and the vampire. In the blink of an eye the ball had reshaped itself to form a huge dragon that took up one fourth the size of the room. The dragon practically roared as a trail of flames leapt out of its mouth and shot towards the vampire. Sphynx herself considering shifting to her wraith form, but she figured that her own imposing figure, the panther, and the fiery, fire breathing dragon would be enough to get the girl running out of the unlocked front door. Maybe then the necromancer could go back to getting some peace. |

Valerie was extremely confused. One minute they had been striking a bargain, the next she was being run out of the house! She stared at the panther, and then at the lady startled. This was uncalled for! Putting her tea down quickly she spun around and ran for the door as fast as her legs could carry her. Taking one last look at the lady in the room, confusion in her eyes she ran out and into the forest, jumping over logs and other obstacles. Finally reaching a safe place in which she could sit and ponder things she sat down on a stump. First the lady was angry with her for her being on her land, then she invited her in, then she chased her out. Not a very nice lady if you asked Valerie. Sighing slightly she stared at the dark sky. It sure was pretty out tonight, the stars shining brightly above her. The moon peaking over the horizon. But she was troubled by the woman. What a strange woman...oh well, hopefully she wouldn't run into her again. |
