Welcome to Elenlond, an original medieval fantasy forum! We're always looking for new, dedicated members.

Elenlond is composed of two continents: Soare and Esiria. Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity.

But how long will that peace last?

Liron
lol pacifists.

Liron sat on a water-worn stone protruding from the roaring river, a single hand trailing through the crystal clear depths. Despite being some thirty feet away, the roar of the falls was loud in his ears, masking most other sounds. He sprawled on his back with legs propped up and eyes half-closed, relying on the constant forest melody to alert him to any oncoming danger. There was no better watchdog than the sparrow protecting her chicks, or the chattering squirrel guarding its horde. If the soothing lullaby ceased, he would know to take his leave. Perhaps if he had been a true warrior, he would have kept one ear open, or one eye open, constantly aware of movement and noise. But he was not, and had not been for quite some time, and so those habits had faded, leaving behind nothing more than a jagged memory.

The falls, as well as drowning out the majority of sound, also pushed away most of the thoughts in his mind. He felt relaxed and contented, things he had not felt for a great deal of time. Or rather, he had, but for mere moments, never for such a prolonged period as this. Part of it, no doubt, stemmed from the fact that he had been frequenting cities, never the best of places for solitude and tranquility. There were far too many people in cities, both small and large, to suit his liking. Once, he’d enjoyed the fast-paced life, such a change from his own. Once, he would have given anything to be part of the crowd, just another man in a sea of faces. Now, he was older, and a little wiser, and wanted nothing more than to be left in peace. It was a change brought on by natural aging, but mostly by the result of too many things occurring in too short a time.

“I wish…”

Well, no use in finishing that thought. There were lots of things he wished for, none of which he would ever receive. And he was not the only one to wish for such things, so what right did he have to complain when they didn’t come true? None whatsoever. It had been his own fault that those things had happened, and now he had to take the blame, much as he didn’t want to do so. His human side made him weak, and no matter how much he hated it, he couldn’t change that aspect of himself.

A wet, clinging feeling on his wrist alerted him to the fact that all was not well, and he opened his eyes to peer, a little blurrily, at the shirtsleeve that had unrolled and fallen in the water. Oh bother. So much for staying dry. He’d taken off his shoes and rolled up his sleeves, but apparently he hadn’t done it well enough. He should probably roll them up, should being the operative word in that statement, but the sun was shining down on him, and a nice feeling of lethargy was spreading over him, and Liron didn’t particularly feel like moving, even to save his shirtsleeve.

“You know,” he said, to no one in particular. “I think I’ll just let it get wet today. One day of wetness will not result in pneumonia.”

After telling the caravan that they would be exploring for awhile, Tsura and Yura embarked to explore this forest they had never seen before. The tall trees and sometimes flowering foliage sent a wave of nostalgia over them, reminding them of their old homes in the treetops, only a lot bigger. The many sounds of nature, from the twittering songbirds feeding their young to the chipmunks scurrying across the forest floor, appealed to the sisters' long ears. The leaves from the towering trees would've almost blotted out the sun were it not for various openings here and there to let generous amounts of light and life in. This added to the beautiful landscape that nature was able to paint, and the two blue-skinned sisters were captivated by it.

"Wow...everything's so beautiful...and big," the longer-haired Tsura spoke, craning her head up to see the treetops.

"Yeah..." the short-haired Yura mused, looking about her in circles. "Kinda reminds you of home, doesn't it?"

An air of longing surrounded Tsura at those words as she paused in her barefoot steps. A look of slight sorrow played on her face. "Yes...yes it does."

Yura noticed the sudden change in mood and stopped as well. "You okay, sis? You seem..."

Tsura snapped out of her solemn trance. "It's nothing, Yura. I just...I just miss it is all."

Yura put a hand on her twin's shoulder. "Me too, Tsura. Me too. That's why we need to move on, no matter how hard it seems."

Tsura nodded and smiled. "You're probably right, sis." Her left ear then perked as it caught the sound of something in the distance...it sounded like the roaring and splashing of running water. "Wait...do you hear something?

Yura's long ears perked as well. "Yeah...it sounds kinda like a river. The sound's coming from the south. You wanna check it out?"

"Of course. It'll be a good opportunity for us to fill our waterskins; we're pretty low on water," Tsura replied, but when she finished, Yura was already thirty feet ahead of her. "Hoy! Wait up!" She ran after her sister, mumbling incoherent things about her being too impatient and whatnot.

The two of them ran through the woods, dodging trees and other foliage. Tiny woodland creatures wisely pranced out of the way of the sisters, while others watched from afar with curiosity. The sound of rushing water became more and more distinct as they neared its source and slowed to a brisk walk. Tsura had eventually caught up with Yura and scolded her about being too anxious and probably getting hurt, while Yura laughed lightheartedly. They quieted down when they reached a parting in the trees. What they saw beyond it took their breath away.

Water...lots of white, foamy water...was endlessly pouring off a high cliff into a river down below. Their view was from a cliff that was perched about halfway between the top and bottom of the falls. This astonishing sight petrified Tsura and Yura in awe as the water continued pouring, setting off a roar of lush sound.

"By Raenah...I don't think we've seen anything like this!" Tsura spoke over the rushing water.

"I know! It's so grand!" Yura replied. She looked about the banks, which were also teeming with forest life. Flowers in full bloom gathered in clusters here and there, and trees lined both sides of the river, some of them willows whose leaves gently caressed the flowing water. "It's like a paradise." Her green eyes then caught another sight: a young man lying down on a protruding rock some thirty feet down where they were near the bank. "Who's that?"

Tsura looked down the same direction and saw the man as well. At first sight, he appeared to be unconscious, but then she saw the man move a bit, perhaps trying to get into a more comfortable position. She concluded that he must be here to relax and enjoy this foreign scenery. "I don't know, but let's leave him be. I think he's trying to relax."

"Well, okay," Yura stated, sitting down on the cliff's edge. "Maybe we should rest too. The scenery's just so great."

But this relaxation was short-lived. The cliff edge she was sitting upon had become saturated with water after the millenia of being exposed to the cascade's constant splashing, softening it in the process. It seemed sturdy enough, but despite Yura being relatively lightweight, it was just enough for the cliff edge to give way and crumble beneath her. It all happened so fast; Yura had no idea what had just happened until she found herself falling. Tsura was quick to react though; she rushed to the edge and grabbed Yura's arm before she plummeted into the water and rocks below.

"What just happened?!" Yura shouted, her life hanging by an arm.

"The ground collapsed under you!" Tsura shouted back, Yura's weight dragging her to her belly.

"Well, whatever! Just don't let go!" Yura yelled, trying to pull herself up.

"I won't! Goddess, you should reconsider wearing chainmail under your clothing!"

"Well excuse me for trying to be well-protected!"

"Have you tried flying at all?"

"Are you kidding? I used up my flight time a half-hour ago!"

"That's just great! Make things more difficult, why don't you--agh!" Tsura's grip slipped for a second, but then she grasped Yura's shirt. Her mind raced. Her grip was slipping again. That man! Maybe he can help! "Help! Help!"

((Sorry for the late response.))

After deciding to let his sleeve be, Liron lapsed back into his half-conscious state, where he remained for the next three minutes before he was loudly interrupted by a feminine scream for help. His eyelids popped open, and he hastily scrambled into an upright position, while simultaneously reaching for the glasses he'd carefully placed to one side. This time, he completely disregarded the water that splashed onto his clothes. There were more important things to worry about than clothes in a time like this. Shoving his glasses onto his nose, he peered up and up and up.....until he spotted a figure hanging off the edge of a cliff.

Well, this was a dilemma If he guessed correctly, he was probably the only person in a one-mile radius who was witnessing this entire scene, thus making him the only person qualified for help. The only problem was, there was really nothing he could do. While he prided himself on being fit, there was no way he could run to where they were in a reasonable amount of time, especially not when the entire route was uphill and in a forest terrain completely unfamiliar to him. He couldn't fly, nor did he have a great enough command of magic to be able to lift the woman up back onto the cliff. But...he had to do something! He couldn't just let that woman fall to her death.........or if not to her death, than to a state of extreme pain and many broken bones that would surely result in death.

A sudden idea struck him. It was chancy, and there was a possibility it wouldn't work, but it was the only thing he could do. Breathing deeply, he cleared his mind and searched around for a suitable assistant. .............There! A large wolf, half hidden in the shrubbery. Liron quickly assessed its speed and strength, decided that he had no other option, and reached out mentally, doing his best to convey, without words, the woman hanging on the cliff and how she shouldn't have to die like that. The wolf considered this for a brief moment before disappearing. Liron sent up a quick prayer before he leapt to his feet and began running. If the wolf had done as he asked, he could check up on things, make sure everyone was okay. But it hadn't....he could only hope that he could get there in time.

-------

The wolf ran quickly and nimbly through the trees, dodging branches and protruding rocks as it practically flew towards the cliff. It slowed down as it neared the sounds of struggle, and when it reached the edge of the forest, trotted out towards the two girls. It paused, cocked his head, and then resumed its trotting. At the edge of the cliff, it carefully reached out, took the dangling girl's arm in its jaw, and slowly inched back, dragging her upwards. When it had dragged her most of the way, it released her, and trotted back a few steps, where it sat on its haunches and observed the two girls.

((Waaaaah, sorry, it's kinda confusing. I'm a little rushed because I have to run off to class, so PM if it doesn't make sense.))

Tsura got a better grip on Yura and pulled with all her might, trying to get her sister up to safety, but to no avail; she was not strong enough to lift her. Yura was trying to lift herself up to the ledge, but she was using all of her strength just to hold on. The two were locked in a stalemate between life and death, but they were getting weaker by the second. At this rate, either one of their grips could loosen any moment, sending Yura plunging to possible death. Tsura's mind would not accept that, but her petite body was being pushed to its limit.

"Tsura!" Yura yelled, tired but determined. "Don't even think about letting go!"

"I'm trying not to!" Tsura yelled back. "But my arm's starting to fall asleep! I don't know how much longer I can keep this up!"

"Don't give me that cow dung!" Yura snapped.

"Well it's kind of hard to hold onto someone wearing chainmail!"

"Oh, like leather's any better! Here's an idea! Why don't you--AGH!"

Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a wolf came and grabbed Yura's other arm in its jaws. Both of the girls' instincts told them to shoo the wolf away and probably run away before it could eat them, but they weren't in any position to do so. When they saw the wolf trying to pull Yura up, it puzzled them as to why, but they shook the thoughts from their heads. The wolf's teeth started to sink into Yura's blue skin, causing it to bleed a little, but Yura held in the pain as it slowly helped Tsura pull her up. It was a painfully long task that seemed to take several eternities, but eventually Tsura and the wolf got Yura up most of the way, just so Yura could rest her arms on the cliff edge. The wolf then let go and stepped back, allowing the girls to catch their breath.

"Are...are you alright?" Tsura asked, breathing in and out.

"I'm...fine now, I guess," Yura replied. She then looked to the wolf and said. "I don't know why, but that wolf helped you save me."

"I know...nature works in strange ways I guess," Tsura stated thoughtfully.

"Yeah, right. Now how's about helping me out here? I can't hold my grip forever!" Yura quipped.

Her statement became the truth as more of the saturated earth collapsed beneath her arms. Tsura grabbed her again.

"By the gods, why does this always happen to me?" Yura cried.

"Your guess is as good as mine!" Tsura harped as she pulled with what little strength she had left. This time around, she was successful as she pulled her twin sister onto the cliff and in to safety. Both of them were breathless, battered, and overall relieved that neither one of them died.

Liron

I have to run faster….faster…..I think it’s a left here….now a right..NO, LEFT!

Disconnected thoughts flew through Liron’s mind, mirroring the actions of his body as he sped through the forest as fast as his legs could carry him. Branches whipped past his face, and protruding tree roots threatened to trip him should he make one misstep, yet not once did he fall and go flying onto his face. Whether it was providence or a natural affinity for the woods, he didn’t know, and didn’t particularly care at the moment. The only thing that concerned him was that he reached the cliff’s edge on time. It didn’t matter if he sustained injuries so long as that girl was safe.

Huffing and puffing – despite being in good condition, Liron was not accustomed to running at breakneck speeds for any duration longer than a minute – he broke through the edge of the forest and skidded to a halt. His eyes darted around madly until they focused on the large wolf and the two girls it sat next to. Here, he paused, refocused his eyes. Two girls? Wasn’t there only supposed to be one? His vision wasn’t the best, it was true, but it was hardly bad enough that he would start seeing duplicates. Although, they weren’t really duplicates. One had short hair while the other possessed long, and they certainly had different styles of dress. Still, their facial features were similar enough to suggest a blood bond between the two. Had there really been two girls?

While regaining his breath, he replayed the image in his head. The girl hanging off the cliff, the voice screaming for help. Hmm, no discrepancy there. He rewound a bit. Fuzzily, he thought he might have heard two different pitches when the screaming started, possibly belonging to two different people, but he wasn’t sure. The sun had slowly been absorbing him of all ability to think when he’d been jolted out of trance. In any case, it didn’t matter whether there was one girl or ten. The important thing was that she – or in this case, them – was safe.

Liron had regained most of his breath, and his composure, by this point, enough to that he could speak without having to stop every five words. “Sorry I’m late. Haven’t run that much in a long time, so I wasn’t sure if I’d make it in time. I’m glad to see he did, though.” Turning to face the wolf, he bowed his head in a measure of respect and thanks, trying to convey all his gratitude as best he could. It had been the wolf’s choice to aid Liron, and Liron was not about to slight the wolf after it had taken precious time and energy away from its own matters.

“Anyway, are you two all right? No broken bones or anything? I could probably take care of minor wounds, but if there’s anything larger, a hospital would be your best choice.”
