| Welcome to Elenlond, an original medieval fantasy forum! We're always looking for new, dedicated members. Elenlond is composed of two continents: Soare and Esiria. Esiria, a land now isolated due to the efforts of the last remaining Goddess, is inaccessible to all beings and lies in the east. Soare, a continent in the west, is composed of three distinct nations: Ashoka, Soto, and Morrim. Lying between the two major continents are the Scattered Isles. Since the dissolution of the pantheon and the fall of the gods, these countries have existed in relative peace and prosperity. But how long will that peace last? I'm not really planning on making a half elf, but I'm curious about them. What is it that makes them different from their Elwetritsch counterparts. Obviously they have their own society, but how is it that one race can breed, and another cannot when they are so much alike? Is it something in the gene structure of the half elves that gives them the capability to produce offspring, can it be foreseen that there will be sterile children, or is it a luck of the draw kind of thing? Also, do the other races treat both Elwetritsch and Half Elves the same? Are there certain humans that will have sterile children? Or is it the particular mix of parents? As in, do human males with female elves produce Elwetritsch, or is it the other way around? I'm just really interested because this character has been around the block a bit, and has a long standing history of being very prejudice towards half-breed races. So, I'm just trying to get a general idea of what I am facing if Vaelen were to run across one of these creatures. |

I would say that it has a lot to do with the gene structure. I would think of it in terms of disease, if you will: two parents who carry the same fatal gene (ie. cystic fibrosis, which is recessive) may have a chance to pass it on to their children. In the same way, if an Elwetritsch child is born, s/he may have inherited a combination of genes that causes them to be sterile. In a sense it is kind of a luck of the draw deal - if you end up with the 'bad' genes, you're an Elwetritsch. If you end up with the 'good' genes, you turn out to be a normal half-elf. It doesn't matter what gender each parent is; mom can be human, dad can be elf, and they may produce an Elwetritsch, while mom could be an elf and dad a human and there'd still be the same general outcome. I would imagine that only human and elven races would have any particular biases towards Elwetritsch and half-elves because it is in their eyes that they may be seen as inferior. Whether other races see it this way too is up to you and the characters playing those races, as, obviously, not everyone is racially intolerant. I actually didn't create the Elwetritsch - I think Sphynx did, if I'm not mistaken. However, reading it, that's the sort of vibe I get, and that genetics plays a huge role. Does that help? =) |
