SPRING

Angkar: Dry season. Often sunny, but precipitation is rare. Humidity is low, some bodies of water may have dried up, and bushfires can occur. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Cooler temperatures, although still relatively hot. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Calm and generally cool. Thunderstorms and heavy showers are not uncommon, and there is also a chance of snow until late in the season.

Soto: Trees begin to bud and the snow begins to melt, which may cause minor flooding. Although temperatures increase, snowfall early in the season is not uncommon. Low-lying plants grow while the tree cover isn't too dense.

WHAT IS ELENLOND?

Elenlond is an original free-form medieval fantasy RPG set on the continent of Soare and the Scattered Isles, which are located to the south in the Sea of Diverging Waters. The four chief nations of the western side of the world—Ashoka in northern Soare, Soto in western Soare, Morrim in eastern Soare, and Angkar, the largest of the Scattered Isles—continue to experience growth and prosperity since the fall of the Mianorite gods, although power struggles within the countries—or outside of them—continue to ensue.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

    "HUH!"

A blow to the right side

    "Huwa!"

A strike to the left side of the head

    "AyeYA!"

End of the staff connecting to the sternum, a potentially fatal blow. Kaida had stolen a practice dummy from the barracks in the city and found this nice cathedral. She had decided to call this place her new home as the high rafters gave her a good area to make a small nest of the fallen drapery.

Her wings stretched out freely now that the rope that bound them was gone. Kaida had only learned a little about english and wanted to learn more than the evil tofu switching woman had taught her. The small japanese girl continued to hit the practice dummy and think about her past.

Kaida was a happy child once upon a time. Her father was her world and her mother her comfort. The black eyed girl was happy and laughed often, played with her birds and drew endlessly. At nights her mother would sing to her as she would comb out her long black plates and stroked her soft golden wings. In the mornings her father would kiss her on the forehead before leaving. When he returned in the afternoon he would play with her and draw. Kaida would never see her father doing his work at home as he felt that his home life should be full for his daughter.

But that all ended when Kaida was 9. Her world was killed at two simple darts laced with poison. Kaida hid and was scared, and this is when she found that she could manipulate the fears and emotions of others. The small mice that were once her friends were now her test subjects. She induced fear into them and watched them as they ran in circles slowly dying in their own mind. The 9 year old had lost herself to the darkness that the world had to offer.

And now Kaida was here, in the abandoned cathedral imagining the town people that killed her true happiness and joy. If she ever were ever to return to her home she would kill those people that killed her parents, she would make sure that they were like the mice, slowly going insane until death.

Raine could hear the sharp thwacks of a sand sack as she neared the abandoned cathedral. She lowered her head and crouched slightly, taking a defensive and stealthy stance. She felt her hands and the blades strapped to her thighs start to heat up with the anticipation she was feeling. She quickly suppressed the burning in her body, knowing that if she chose to use her flames, she might not make it back out alive, or stable.

Her eyes scanned the shabby doorway, a few feet away. She listened to the sounds coming from within, waiting for heavy breathing. Heavy breathing meant whoever was inside was tired out, and if she needed to fight, it would be a good time. She became impatient as the thwacks continued. Rounding up all her courage, she stepped around the doorway, holding her fists level with her cheek bones and feeling a surge of immense heat throughout her body.

She was taken aback as she stepped inside, however. The only other soul inside appeared to be around 11 or 12 years of age. She froze, taking in the young girl's frame. She admired her golden wings and her dark eyes held so much power. She automatically felt attached to the youngling, and decided that if the girl was willing, she would take her on all of her adventures and teach her all she knew.

    Your Fear blows wind
    ---------------------------------------------------- Under My Wings---------------------------------

Kaida felt a slight temperature change near her wings, and it wasn't the wind. She worled around her bow staff stopping about three inches from the womans face. The japanese girl narrowed her eyes so they where only black slivers. Who is this woman? How dare she sneak up on Kaida like so.

"Anatahadare? Anata wa dare ka no kunren ni muchu ni naru koto wa kenmeide wa nai nodesu ka? Anata wa anata no jinsei o ushinau kanōsei ga arimasu kami no josei"1 Kaida didn't move from her spot but looked around for others that could have followed her.

"Anata wa hitoridesu ka? Kore wa machibusedesu ka? Hakone ga anata o okutta nodesu ka?Na ndeshou?!2" The twelve year old began to yell paranoia filling her. Kaida choked it down and noticed the sword hanging from the woman's belt.

Quickly she spun the bow staff flipping it to hit the bottom of the sheath the sword sat in. The sword flew up spun and the hilt fell right into Kaida's now open hand. Kaida took a few steps back before lifting off into the air to a high rafter and peered down at the woman.

"Kaito!3" Kaida barked at the woman.

Raine emitted a low rumble from her throat that resembled a growl. That sword had been through a lot with her and she needed it back. She could feel heat rising in the pit of her stomach, the beginnings of anger. She forced her hands down to her side and swallowed down the heat. She decided to focus on the problem at hand.

She began analyzing the situation. She had only heard that language once before and she couldn't place what it was, let alone translate it. She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts and beginning to voice them.

"Listen, I do not speak your language. I am in search of an empty place that I can claim. I did not realize you had set up camp here. I will leave if you return my sword." She kept her voice calm, but firm, showing her place of authority and that she was not intimidated. She spoke with confidence and kept her icy stare on the girl in the rafters. She reminded her of how hostile she was when she was that young.

The japanese girl knew the word sword, well katana. She watched as the woman seemed to be trying to force down something that seemed to be stuck in her throat.

"I is Kaida! I has you katana!" Kaida proclaimed to the woman "Anata wa anata no Katana o gen-dōri ni shitaidesu ka?"1 Kaida mocked dancing along the rafters and swooping down keeping the sword just out of reach.

Raine squinted her eyes shut, trying her hardest to keep the flames at bay. She could feel her palms getting sweaty, the heat rising. She swallowed hard, focusing on keeping her wits. But when she looked up at the young girl who was obviously not going to be cooperative, her flames weren't going to have it.

She doubled over and yelled as the flames surged up within her. When she stood back up, her hands were immediately covered in flames. There was burning determination behind her eyes that shot through her body to her hands. She was overcome with the burning sensation and she had to get rid of it. Before she knew it, the flames started at her legs and quickly started rising. She had to calm down before she got burned again.

Now there was fear in her eyes, it rose in the pit of her stomach and she felt it in the back of her throat. She realized she was straining herself and she couldn't calm down if she was forcing it. She pushed down the fear and up rose confidence. The confidence to overcome the flames. She took a deep breath, closing her ice blue eyes.

Air in, flames out. Air in... flames out. Her own voice echoed peacefully in her mind. She opened her eyes again and the flames faded. They shrunk back into nothing, and Raine placed her hand on her thigh, reaching for a dagger indiscreetly.

Kaida saw the struggle in the woman and was slightly scared. If this woman was a Kaji iitsutae1 then Kaida didn't want to make her mad. Swooping back up to the rafters the small girl dropped the sword right at the woman's feet.

"Kaida is sorry" The small girl bent down on the rafter and watched the woman. What was her fear? For once Kaida did not want to know what the fear of someone was, expecially because this woman could be a Kaji iitsutae which could cause a problem. "You a kaji iitsutae?" she asked looking at the woman with wide eyes.

Raine calmly looked up at the young girl after picking up her sword. She strapped it back up without looking and tried to decipher what the girl had called her. She couldn't make sense of anything the girl was saying, except her poor english. She decided to give something a try.

"Young one, I do not speak your language. I only speak English. I would like to teach you some if you want." She spoke slowly and clearly, making sure the girl got almost everything. This young girl was cute, and she wasn't helpless, which Raine admired. She had taken up her own duties and responsibilities. She was better off than Raine was at her age. She wasn't running from anything, she was charging life head on.

She waited to see recognition flash in the girls dark eyes, and then realized that with how dark and emotionless they seemed, there had to be some emotion inside, be it hatred, longing, sadness or fear. Raine wanted to see it, so she would find it. She would be as much of a guardian as she could for this girl, if she let her that is.

"Kaida can english." The small girl said crouching and then hopping off the rafter landing lightly, She pointed at the lady "Hinoon'na1 teach Kaida."

Kaida looked at the woman intensely her black eyes almost never conveyed her emotions being that they were all black. Her pupil was hard to find among the black sea that it lay in. The twelve year old took a step or two closer to look at the woman's face. It was a kind face, like Kaida's mother's face, round in the cheeks and narrow in the chin. The ice blue eyes were different from what Kaida had seen most of her life. Both of her parents had brown eyes, so eyes of color were interesting to her.

"You give Kaida you name." Kaida demanded hopping back quickly and crouching again to watch the woman's movements.

Raine could tell the young girl was extremely cautious, and it made her sad, thinking of all she had to have gone through to be this skittish. She moved her hands from her blades, bringing them up to surrender. She wanted Kaida to know she wouldn't hurt her.

"My name is Raine. Like the weather." She smiled, keeping her voice calm and smooth, and her expressions peaceful. She started thinking about why her mother had named her Raine, and she could come up with no explanation. She wondered if it was raining the night she was born, or if there was something her mother never told her. It could even be that her mother just liked the name.

Raine didn't know, but she wanted to. Maybe this girl could open up a window, trigger some memories since she reminded her so much of herself. She wondered if she was meant to find this girl, but she had never believed in a greater being controlling all the creatures of the earth. She had gone through too much with no sign of anyone to help her, to believe in anything anymore. Maybe, just maybe, she could believe in Kaida.

"whe-ath-er?" Kaida cocked her head at the woman, Raine? No no this woman's name was surely Hinoon'na, Kaida would just call her Noon'na for short though. "we-hea-th-er?"

Kaida sounded out but it still did not make since. Noon'na clearly did not know english, or she did but she just doesn't know how to explain it to her. Kaida scurred around then floated up to her nest that she had made in a small out cove where she had pushed a statue of a lady out. That lady now lay on the floor in many little pieces.

The coves was about ten feet deep and a little taller than five feet, and perfect for Kaida. At the far end she had made a nest out of three large red curtains that had fallen from the alters at the front of the church. Kaida had collected candles from around the church and lit them at night for light in her small cove. The girl also had a array of nick-nacks she had collected.

One of these pieces was a figure that had been bent into a lowercase T shape. It was made of a heavy metal and was about as big as Kaida's small foot that was about a size 4. Kaida ran out of the cove and jumped out into the air before spreading her wings and lightly landing in front of Noon'na.

"whe-ath-er!" She proclaimed holding up the metal T.

Raine chuckled, realizing she did not know this word. She looked around the building for a way to explain it, when she spotted the setting sun. She hadn't realized how much time had passed, but blew it away, seeing as she had no where to be. She lifted her arm silently, pointing outside to the sun.

"The weather is nice. It's sunny and warm. Rain is when water falls from the sky. That's bad weather." She slowly lowered her arm, waiting to see if Kaida understood. She tried to think of more examples, but then she realized there were so many more basics to teach her. She got her mind wrapped up around grammar to teach her and then realized that grammar wasn't that important. She would pick it up later.

"This is the letter 'T'. It makes a 'tuh' sound." Raine then pointed to the bent pieces of metal in Kaida's hands. She could teach her the alphabet. Or maybe just stick to words and meanings. All Raine was certain of, was that both of them had a long way to go.

Kaida flew back up to her cove and pulled out a big thick crumbling book. It was heavier so Kaida pushed it to the edge of the opening and let it fall to the ground with a big thud. Then with all her strength Kaida pushed the book over to Noon'na.

"Hon" Kaida pointed at the book.

Raine bent down over the large book, blew some of the dust off the cover, and lightly brushed her fingers over the crumbling material. It smelled of violets and old books, and she felt a strange pull towards the object. Suddenly, fragments of memories started flashing through her mind, but they weren't hers. She drew back from the book, and the images faded. She grasped her head in her hands to ease the confusion, until she realized they were Kaida's memories.

Everything this girl had been through, it was all clear now. Ridiculed. Shunned. Attacked. Physically injured. She knew it all. And she had experienced it all herself. Now that she had an understanding of Kaida, she decided not to push her luck. She bent down over the book once more, running her fingers over the cover and gently pulling it back.

She crouched on her knees, eyeing the paper that was tattered and barely hanging on to its spine. She looked at the poor paper with a feeling of recognition. Like she knew exactly how it felt to be hanging on by a thread, and feeling like you can't make it. Her thread had been Ruby, her fox familiar. Suddenly realizing her pull to the young girl in front of her, she realized that if Kaida needed a thread, she would be it.

"Noon 'na Hon1" Kaida pointed at the book again hoping that Noon 'na would realize and tell her the english word.

Kaida could not read english, and barely read japanese when she was home. Hopefully Noon 'na would teach her a lot. All Kaida wanted to know was basically everything. Despite being twelve Kaida acted like and thought much like a six or seven year old. That was due to a traumatic even that happened on her birthday, but the girl did not remember what had happened exactly.

"Noon 'na." Kaida pulled on Noon 'na's sleeve before pointing at the book and saying hon again.

Raine smiled and closed the book cover to preserve the pages. She pointed to the leathery cover and muttered, "Book." She then flipped the cover over and to the first page. She pointed to the thin, shredding material, and spoke. "Page, and cover. Page, cover." She pointed her finger, alternating between the page and the cover, all yellowing with decay.

She looked up at Kaida and smiled, taking pride and honor in teaching her all that she knew. The young girl would prove to love learning, holding a passion to know more and see all. She wasn't easy to teach, especially considering English was not an easy thing to teach. But she knew that Kaida would not back down. She may get frustrated, but seeing her past and knowing her mind told her that she was too determined to give up.

Raine looked outside at the still sinking sun, wishing she had more time with the girl, but she needed a place to camp overnight. She would return tomorrow to teach her more and keep her company, but the sun was setting quickly and she needed daylight to find shelter. She slowly stood from her crouched position over the book, and turned to face Kaida.

"I am sorry, Kaida. I must go so I can find a place to sleep. I will return tomorrow morning." She turned to leave, but froze when she felt another small tug on her sleeve. She turned around, finding Kaida behind her. She smiled at the young girl and knew she had to get going. She also had to find Ruby. She had let her explore earlier and she didn't want the small fox following her stale scent trail in the dark.

Noon 'na was leaving! No! Kaida stomped her feet quickly before tugging much more on the sleeve pulling Noon 'na to the area below her cove.

"Noon 'na!" she whined like a child then held her hands in a stay gesture before flying up to her cove.

Kaida grunted pushing the large heavy velvet curtains to the edge. She looked down and Noon 'na and slowly started letting out the cloth before it had all reached the ground in a pile.

"Noon 'na stay! Sleep!" The stubborn girl stamped her foot and pointed at the curtain a determined look on her face. Kaida was not going to let this woman go with out her teaching everything. "Boooook, Cooover, Paaage!" Kaida said opening the book and pointing to the corresponding object hoping that it would let Noon 'na know that she was learning what she was being taught.

Raine couldn't help but chuckle at the young girls efforts to make her stay. She nodded and smiled when she called the book, page and cover by their English names. She observed the curtain hanging from the rafters, wondering if she really could get up there safely. She shrugged her shoulders before turning to the doorway. She looked back at Kaida, about to speak, when Ruby came bounding in with a dead rabbit in between her jaws.

"Good girl, Ruby! You got us tomorrow's breakfast." She patted Ruby's soft head and looked up at Kaida in the rafters. She picked Ruby up gently, wrapping the curtain tightly around her arm, and hoisting herself up a distance. She let Ruby crawl up her arm to perch on her shoulder as she continued to climb up the thick curtain.

Once she reached the top, she was met with a satisfied Kaida and a curious Ruby. She let the fox carefully explore the small cove, taking in all the smells, sounds and sights. She sat carefully, unsure of the stability of the small resting area. It was definitely peaceful and cute. It was cozy and reminded her of somewhere her mom used to take her. She sighed happily, admiring the little random objects placed about. She admired Kaida's work, wondering how long she had been at this.

Raine laughed whole-heartedly, eyeing the small girl's confusion. She picked Ruby up and placed her in her lap. "This," She pointed to Ruby. "is a fox. Her name is Ruby." She let Ruby trot over to Kaida, happily. Ruby always loved to meet new people. She let Kaida get accustomed to Ruby, having never seen a creature like her before.

Raine chuckled as Kaida was cautious with Ruby, jumping back when she would yip. She called Ruby's name and Ruby trotted up to her and sat in her lap. She curled up and purred against her. Raine held the dark red ball gently, motioning for Kaida to come pet her.

She waited as the young girl approached cautiously. She wondered if she had been this cautious when Ruby had first spoken to her, or if she was more curious. She guessed she had been more curious, she always had been. She was up for exploring and laughing in the face of danger. Always.

The small girl crept forward looking at the Rhubai. A fox. What a strange word. Foe-ocks. The coloring of the animal was also strange, a brilliant red, like the squirrel Kaida had had as a child. The squirrel wasn't really hers but it would eat nuts from her hand.

"Foex" Kaida lightly stroked the animal before darting off deep into the cove.

She returned a moment later with a picture of her father, mother, and herself. It was a painting but Kaida had kept it with her.

"Kaida" She pointed to herself "Ayua" Kaida pointed to her mother. "Daisuke" She pointed to her father.

Raine looked intensely at the painting in Kaida's hands. She decided to teach her the English words for mother, father and daughter. She pointed to the beautiful woman she had named Ayua, and said, "Mother." She then pointed to Daisuke, and said, "Father." And last she pointed to Kaida, the beautiful young girl that took mostly after her mom in the face. She lightly said with disdain in her eyes, "Daughter..." She sadly looked at the happy family and realized that they had both lost their families, and everyone they loved and lived for.

She suddenly felt bad for Kaida, know what she had gone through and relating to her to a certain extent. She also knew that the large golden wings had caused problems, as well as Ruby had caused problems. It was unusual to see a fox traveling in the open with a human, so people had approached her and even tried to steal or harm Ruby. Nothing bad ever happened, so Raine had kept her guard low around Roo. The little fox could fight for herself and didn't want to be babied forever.

Raine looked up at Kaida and the painting, realizing she was staring intensely at her facial expressions. She looked down quickly, feeling a surge of heat rise in her stomach. She pushed the heat down forcefully, and wondered what would happen if she ever held a "fiery" passion for someone. She wondered if she would be able to contain her fire and her abilities if she ever lost herself in someone. She promised herself then and there not to fall in love. With anyone.

    Your Fear blows wind
    ---------------------------------------------------- Under My Wings---------------------------------

Father. Daisuke was her father, her knight in shining armor, her god. Kaida loved her father and missed him. Small watery tears welled in her black almond eyes. The fear and sadness of the three days in the closet rushed back and Kaida let out a small sob.

"Watashi wa anata ga koishī, otōsan wa modotte kite kudasai"1 Kaida cried as her body shrank around the picture.

Her sobs were quiet at first, a small hiccup here and a sniffle there, but soon they became true sobs of heartache. Tears splattered on the picture's glass only making the small girl cry more.

Raine quickly rushed to Kaida's side, shooing Ruby away and kneeling next to the crying child. She gently wrapped her arms around her and felt her sorrows. She looked at the picture once again, feeling this young girl's pain and conflict. She felt sad for Kaida and she wanted to make her happy. She kept her voice low and calm as she spoke, to ensure peace and comfort.

"Hey, listen Kaida. It's ok. Stop crying." When she wouldn't stop crying, she decided to let her spill it out until there was nothing left. She held her close, still being cautious about how she would react to touch. She let the girl cry and rubbed soothing circles into her small back.

Kaida leaned into Noon'na and cried until she had nothing left to cry and all that escaped her lips were small hiccups. The fear of burning reached her senses and she knew that it was from the other woman. But for once Kaida was glad for the comforting of the woman and did not wish her to go.

"Kaida want father." A small hiccup shook her body as she put the picture to the side and sat staring blankly.

The girl didn't cry when her parents were killed, she hadn't cried at all in fact. That was the fist time she had cried since she was 9 and her parents had been killed. Kaida did not like the feeling of crying, it made her feel weak and useless. But she did not let these feeling surface, instead she saved them for when she might need them later, if ever.
