The firefly lamps of the Capitol Circle burned as ever their magical glow. The headquarters of Auberon's Destiny were provided with rooms for sleeping and they had taken to using the one overlooking the circle because, at that time in history, no one ever slept in the building anyways – and neither's house was really an option. Rising from the bed in the orange light filtered by curtains like veils, he drank from a glass of water, a headache starting from the act of standing following all that had come before (hands pressing hard on his lower back, the difficulty of breathing with a weight atop him). "It will be done soon, my love," said the general – a thin man, balding as the autumn outside. His love turned to face him, bare and slender has the trees. "I still worry about Barillus." Nineteen, ambitious, his curls making a halo about his shadowed face. "You're stepping over him to elect me and he won't be happy." "What's he going to do? Kill you?" The general laughed, made a gesture of his long hand that cast a shadow on the opposite wall. "That's still illegal, you know. No loopholes for that." His love was silent, standing in beautiful silhouette before the glowing window, drinking more water in the belief that it might dispel his headache. "Come back," said the general. His love hesitated, setting down the water slowly, and then laid himself beside the sprawled, skinny man with the beak of a hawk. He allowed himself to sink into that embrace. They shared several kisses. "I love you, Aniketos," said the general. "I love you too," he replied without hesitation. Aniketos had not thought of this in so long, but the firefly lamps of Madrid brought back the long-dead General Sera Rumio. He had exchanged those words for all he now had. The rest had been given freely, but those words had been his currency. Did I love him? Aniketos would ask himself at unexpected moments – walking out from meetings in the guild headquarters late on summer nights. Did I make myself love him, or was it truly so?
