SUMMER

Angkar: Wet season. Precipitation is common during the late afternoon and evening hours. Vegetation grows significantly during the summer, but flooding is a danger due to the monsoons that ravage the country. The rainforest sees evenly distributed rainfall throughout the season.

Ashoka: Desert: Extremely hot and dry. Violent, heavy downpours following long dryspells. Jungle: Hot and humid with frequent, violent rainstorms.

Morrim: Relatively hot and dry, but with a chance of thunderstorms from time to time. The heat may cause forest fires.

Soto: Hot and humid, tree cover is dense while ground growth is restricted. Thunderstorms see the most amount of rainfall during the season, and it can be very windy. On occasion, there are flash floods that can destroy homes and farms built on flood plains.

  • CURRENT EVENTS

Angkar: To honour the reinvigoration of the ancient city of Mondrágon, the majestic Queen Eulalia has permitted the opening of a Coliseum where people from around the world and all walks of life can test their combat skills against one another. Many have already done battle in search of honour, glory, prizes and money.

Ashoka: In an otherwise peaceful times, Ashokans are beset with the relatively minor inconveniences of wandering undead and occasionally-aggressive giant rock worms. There has also been some controversy over the recent re-legalisation of human sacrifice.

Morrim: Rumour has it that Emperor Leofric de Hollemark is mustering forces for a war. Though the threat from Soto’s forests has passed, the forces previously employed in watching the forest now linger at the border. Rumours also circulate of a small group that has been dispatched to make contact with the tribes of the Do’suul Mountains.

Soto: The Sotoans have defeated the fey and liberated themselves from Méadaigh’s oppression! Preliminary efforts have been made at rebuilding the city of Madrid, which had been captured at the beginning of the war. However, the Sotoans are hindered from recovery famine. Méadaigh’s magic caused summer to persist in the Erth’netora Forest through the winter. Her power has been withdrawn and the plants die as if preparing for winter – even though it is now summer. The Sotoans must sustain off what food they can get, what creatures they can kill and what can be imported into the city from Morrim and Angkar.

    ~Hail, Mysteria -- I shield my eyes...~

Upon her return to established living society, Sara wasted no time finding a secure room in a secure inn somewhere and locking herself in as soon as omagatoki drew near.

Not that a door could keep out the thing she was trying to protect herself from, but having established physical walls and barriers made it easier for the apprentice onmyoji to protect the small area with a few well-chosen prayers and requests from wandering city spirits. She spent much of the night pacing, trying to sleep or read, and peering out the window for the all-too familiar shape of the wicked dryad from the forest under the mountains.

It had been close -- too close for her first venture. But, as the Hour of the Ox came and went and dawn arrived, the junior shaman began to feel a bit easier and after a restless three-hour nap with the advent of the sun, she started mulling over the situation in a different light. It really had been extremely dangerous, and it would have been safer if Ylsa had been there with her... but she hadn't been. She'd been forced to face, and survive, a grave danger by herself. What had begun as a simple tribute to lost souls had become a battle of wills and magic, and Sara had not only survived but had been good enough at whatever she was doing to frustrate the swamp dryad.

Evil hates progress. It was one of the more simple, telling phrases Ylsa was fond of. So she wandered around the town proper now, ruminating on her extraordinary good fortune and wild personal success. She wandered aimlessly enough to give those thoughts their fair run and let them fall flat after a bit, keeping the good stuff and leaving the bad, and allowing her tired mind instead to consume the between-state of the town around her.

Everyone was bundled up, of course. Somewhere nearby, Bughunter avoiding the grasping hands of children, climbing up onto a frosty eaves and proudly showing them her butt. The first good frost of winter had really set in here and everything glittered in the half-risen sun, chasing away the last of the semi-shaken fugue she was in. After a visit to the post wherein she dropped off her latest letter to Flora, detailing the experience, she figured she'd done a good enough job to earn a nice, relaxing tea-time, and wandered into one of the bakeries after just such a thing.

"Just a black tea, please, sweet if you can make it." A clink of coins and a hot steaming cup was handed to her a few moments later and she sat down with it just as the bell above the door jingled with the entrance of another customer. Sara took a quick test-sip.

Aw hell yes, I needed this so bad. Happy post-birthday, grasshopper.

The world had changed, the one she knew, the one many knew, and change came swift, not overnight but almost as quick. At times change comes in steady yet slow steps but here it was brutal and relentless, and change was not done with the world, not yet at least. A nation was turned upside down, and something inside the scarlet adventurer burned bright, but alas she gave the matter though, was it really upside down? Or was it just different? The more she thought about it the more she realized what happened was not an act of something evil, nor good for that matter, it simply was. With that in mind, lingering around a nation that frowned upon her was not a smart idea, so if she was not going to fight, fleeing was the other better choice. Nothing wrong with running away, she had her goals, and maybe someday she would take a side in some struggle but for now and like her father she chose to remain neutral in the revolt of Soto. Pheonitia also learned that the wilds were not safe, Ashoka too far of a destination in such a hostile environment, and that the river would be the safest passage to a friendlier nation, Morrim.

During that journey she encountered many travelers, most human, many like herself wanting to flee to the neighbor region, but that also produced an opportunity. The ability to think is the most dangerous of them all, for there are those who would prey upon the weak and the desperate, bandits, scammers, or just vicious murderers. A couple had been pinned down by criminals, apparently after their goods, seeing this there was no way Red would let it slide and with a prompt dose of ass whopping martial style, she made the criminal trio see stars above their heads. Grateful enough the couple asked Pheonitia if she could escort them the rest of the way, offered payment too, which she would refuse normally but this was not her world anymore, in here she was not the daughter of a wealthy man, and the coin she forged back home was already scarce in her bag, so with a few nods and gestures she accepted the job gladly. Thinking along the way that this had been simple, back home she would be punished for being a vigilante, while here she was a hero? No, not a hero, the concept of hero in this world was the stuff bards sang about, in here this was actually an occupation. She could get used to this, and as she thought it a smile brighten up her expression.

Red had no real destination in Morrim, just the nation in general, but Hughes and Helena had relatives in a small town in the region and thus their destination became hers. She bowed grateful has they handed her payment and gratitude, she felt like she had done a good thing and hoped she could do more in the future but for now she needed to get her bearings straight. She needed to study more, Soto had been a game of hide and seek, and while she learned plenty, she still craved more knowledge but as her stomach rumbled Pheonitia knew more pressing matters had to be addressed. How long as it been since she had a proper meal? Ever since she got there probably, she had been snacking and scavenging, and felt like her body had been consuming itself, she needed to establish some routines back into her life, but for now she was ready to feast. A bakery of sorts was the first thing she ran into, her sweet tooth pressured her logic and the bell chimed as she entered. It was mostly empty, maybe it was like this all the time. – Hello! – She tried out the man behind the counter, could he listen to her magical whisper or not? Those within the vicinity that could would listen to her but the man had this look in his eye as he stared back at Pheonitia and she knew, the message was not received. Nothing to worry about really, she had a notebook and a quill just for these kinds of situations, and since nothing was in display that she could point out she would write down, “Hello! I’m wondering what kind of baked goods you have.” Presenting the written message with a smile upon her lips. Once again though, the man had that look, the message was not received. Now what?! – You have to speak up lass… I can’t read this gibberish. – He said, he could not read the “gibberish” or to read at all she thought, and in dismay sighed, tracing the bridge of her nose in continuous act lost in thought, she wanted to eat, but she wanted to know what to eat. Maybe there was a menu around, oh her sense of smell was making her even hungrier. It was then she darted her attention to the other patron that casually drank her tea. – I’m sorry to bother, but can you help me? – Once more she used her gift, hopping the other could listen to it.

    ~Hail, Mysteria -- I shield my eyes...~

When she was small she used to hear voices when she was just on the brink of sleep. There were always four, and they were always friendly, and always the same ones, and seemed to know her, but they always sounded like they were right inside her inner ear, or her head. They even had coherent conversations with one another and soothed her when she was scared, made her feel better if she was sad. As she got older she stopped hearing them, likely the result of having moved further away from the spirit world. Or maybe back then she was just experiencing brink-of-sleep anomalies. Or she had a mental problem.

Either way, when she heard another voice – one so unfamiliar, and so sudden, in such a strange place and at such a strange time – she jumped and almost spilled her tea all over the place.

At the clattering of her chair, the one or two other customers in the place turned and shot her dirty looks, which Sara didn’t even notice. Maybe it was the lack of sleep, making her hear things again… but it didn’t sound like any of the old voices. It was taking her some time to get used to being so attuned, and there were still, of course, all the old doubts that maybe she was going crazy and belonged in the asylum, so hearing a psychic whisper was a bit like getting splashed with cold water. Her eyes swept the room, and fell on the new customer.

She was certainly distinctive enough. Wherever she came from, they made them tall and powerfully present. Not only did she stand out physically, but Sara swore she could feel… something. Something that made her think of the light and heat of the Sun, that seemed to carry its cosmic Intelligence. Something that felt very, very old.

Maybe I wasn’t just hearing things after all. The woman was looking at her, so she must have addressed her directly. Though part of her worried that she was wrong and that she’d look like a total doof, Sara stood with her tea cupped in her still-thawing hands and approached the sun-woman.

“You need help with something?” By chance, then, she glanced down to the woman’s hands, seeing a note in them, and her face lit up. Ah – either she could not speak Common or she could not speak at all – just like Dae-suk. Confident, then, that she had indeed heard correctly, she stood up a little straighter and flashed a warm smile. “Oh, I see, you’re trying to order, huh? Sir, what kinda baked things have you got?”

The baker frowned, squinting eyes flitting between the two, and showed Red a small assortment of scones, croissants, breads, bagels, muffins, and even a few danishes – one of Sara’s favorite baked sweets.

“Anything catch your eye?” She asked the tall stranger.

Oh no! A little heads up would have been nice, seeing the reaction her whisper caused she regretted not putting in the effort to at least walk to the person she was addressing before she did it. Luckily enough the tea managed to stay inside the cup for the time being, at least that much. She wanted to say sorry but thinking with some clarity after the initial reaction she decided it was best to look apologetic and let the woman gather herself. The blond sure seemed lost but eventually eyes met and Pheonitia raised the notebook in her hands in a mix of greeting and apology, but at the same time indication of purpose, that she indeed needed a little help. Some moments are like finishing a puzzle, you don’t need to look for the pieces anymore but fitting the remaining few in place just takes a moment or two to click and then it flows, the smile of the woman met its equal in Pheonitia that also produced and quick nod.

The baker on the other hand was not too fond of smiles, how rude of him she thought, was she not a customer to his establishment? She decided to ignore it, there was no point in doing anything but ignore it, her stomach felt like a clash of titans, eating something was far more important than the smile of the baker. That and soon her face lit up, the corners of her lips quirking up, higher and higher they went at the sight of what had been brought, so much to choose, and while maybe the baker was not the cheerful persona she wished he could be, the man sure knew his trade based on looks alone. The hard choice was made easier, when she decided that the only thing she had no wish to eat was bread, maybe it was excessive but she could always work it out later when exploring the town, and in fact she looked forward to it. So when the woman asked if anything had caught her eye, she nodded and whispered. – Aside from bread I’ll have one of each and… - She glanced back at the woman’s own table. – Tea! You were drinking tea right? I’ll have the same. Can I trouble you to place the order? – A short nod and a flash of teeth were shot to the other, only to follow up with Red rummaging her bag for the coin pouch, also in quick consideration Pheonitia wondered if she should treat the woman? Perhaps, it was the right thing to do, she would most likely, and unknowingly nodding to herself in regards of her own shenanigans.

    ~Hail, Mysteria -- I shield my eyes...~

It didn't take too long for the new lady to decide, but during that time Sara did her best psychic probing -- though she could have saved herself the trouble: the longer she stood in the woman's immediate vicinity, the warmer she began to feel. A couple of moments passed and her hands were completely and suddenly thawed, her ears no longer hurt from the biting wind, and her nose had stopped threatening to run from the chill. There was powerful magic around this one -- Sara began to already suspect that she was rather more than human.

Aside from bread I’ll have one of each and…Tea! You were drinking tea right? I’ll have the same. Can I trouble you to place the order?

The voice came again, and it was all so incredible that the young apprentice couldn't help grinning. "Of course! She'll have one of each except the bread, and a black tea as well."

The baker stared at them boldly now, eyes flitting back and forth between the two. Suddenly, Sara realized that the woman hadn't spoken or written anything, and that they must look like a very bizarre couple indeed. She was glad, then, that this wasn't one of those towns where people got persecuted if they were even suspected of sorcery, and decided to improvise. "After all this time I can tell what she's thinking just by looking into her eyes."

    "...you just met her."

"By the slant of her shoulders, then."

The baker gave up, and filled the order, perplexed and suspicious -- luckily for Pheo and Sara, though, a small family of four toddled in just after they finished, distracting him for a bit.

There were a couple of plates, so Sara volunteered to help Pheo carry it. "Hey, wanna sit with me?" normally she wasn't so social, but... well, obviously, this was an exceptionally interesting individual. "I could use some... warm, company this morning." Some memory of the previous night returned with a shiver, but the woman's fiery aura kept most of the residual chill away.

She could make the wildest judgments on people, they were usually wrong since her starting point was that of people being inherently good, and so, Pheonitia would trust yet another. Trust did go both ways sometimes, but in regards of how she was perceived by others she had no idea, or even an opinion about it, she simply did things the best way she could. It had to be enough and maybe that certainty was an inheritance from the silver haired wizard. She had a glimpse of a grin by the other, it was good, they were willing to help and thank the arcane, she was starving. Walking inside an establishment such as this only to be denied of a meal, would be a big tease and quite the insult, but luck would have it otherwise… or did it? With some coins in hands eyes were shot at those that stared back, browns went up and, What is going on?, was the thought in her mind. She looked at the woman, back at the man and the silence was broken by words.

Oh! I get it… She did in fact and even though it was a lie Pheonitia thought it best just to play along and nod many times. She was a horrible lair and would have been better if she had not done anything at all. He makes a good point… Guilty, she averted eyes from the owner to the woman, who was quick to respond. Good save! Once more the nod, and a roll of eyes, as if the body language had been so obvious and strongly accurate. An uneasy smile followed by the sound of coins hitting the counter was sufficient to throw all suspicion off, but Pheonitia frowned as the whole lot of coins was swiped with no return change in return. She had the firm belief she was being robed out of money, but the amount was probably not enough to raise further suspicion, maybe people did not perceive sorcery as a good thing.

She lingered in thought a while longer than she should have, a usual motion of her index finger as it traced the bridge of her nose was a betrayer of the fact for those who knew her well. Words though, they brought her back to the reality outside of her mind’s inner workings. It was an easy yes or no question, maybe she should just limit this to a clear and visible nod, just in case, but the eyes of the owner no longer cared. She just picked her order and clumsily made her way towards the table of the other. A tea cup threatened to fall as she sat, but she managed to balanced it at the last moment, smiling happily to the success.

She feasted her eyes on the meal, but before she could start a respectful bow was made to the other only then she satisfied her hunger with a first bite of a delicious scone. Her eyes mellowed out in satisfaction. Then she thought about the words choice of the other, warm company she had said, peculiar choice indeed. – If you don’t mind me being candid, I’m happy to have some company as well. – She let the other know, it had been lonely since she got there, in fact it had been a bit stressful as she landed in the middle of struggle. Morrim seemed like change of pace, maybe she could get to know people now, and even find some occupation. As she finished her scone she sipped on the tea scalding her tongue and producing a suitable funny face in the process. She liked hot things, but she just got a bit careless, oh well.

They sat down, and bows were exchanged before the stranger tucked in. Sara took a sip of her own tea, feeling a bit more settled now that she wasn't alone, and spoke quietly, not wanting other people to listen in and look at them strangely as the baker did.

"I'm Sara," She introduced herself. "Sara Prins." She didn't worry about handshakes, as they both had their hands full at the moment. Thoughtfully she took another sip of tea, wondering how exactly to learn more about this individual without making her feel like she was under a microscope. Sara couldn't imagine that someone as unique as her wouldn't have had a million of the same questions posed to her every time she met someone new -- comments about her height, her muteness, her telepathy... it probably all got rather old after a while. That being said, there was little point in avoiding the elephant in the room.

"I don't normally hear stuff so clearly." Her eyes flitted to the baker, but he was busy with the new customers. The children babbled loudly and for once Sara was glad for their annoying chatter. "Not since I was a kid, anyway, but even then it wasn't people who talked to me. I've never met anyone with your kind of mastery over psychic communication."

Well, there was Sabe -- good ol' Lucifer, who seemed to be able to read peoples' minds and tell the entire world what they were thinking, finishing their sentences before they could and causing a right stink by stealing the words right from their heads. She had never heard him speaking telepathically, but she didn't doubt for a moment that he could. Among other things he could do. If he hadn't made an exception for her to treat her like an endearing kid, she would have been rather scared by him, even while she understood that he was already objectively pretty terrifying.

"What brings you to this town, anyway?" Classic icebreaker, Prins. Classic. "I mean... what with most people here not being able to read, it can't be easy to get around."

Right! The critical component to kick start any relation was missing, name exchange, it was just that basic. Her mind drifted on the concept for a moment before she nodded to the other and smiled. - It’s nice to meet you Miss Prins, I’m Pheonitia… Verithas! - She made the other know, with some hesitation, she hardly ever introduced herself like that, which made her wonder if there weren’t just too many aliases that she carried. No need for subterfuge now and hopefully it would remain like so in the future. She reminisced on that final thought as she took another sip of tea, but before her mind trailed for too long the moment had passed and took another bite to the scone. Her face’s expression had brightened some, she was indoors, eating freshly baked food, in the company of someone, she could not ask more of the moment.

Soon thought her attention was less focused on the “little things” and more on the statement by the other. She narrowed eyes, not fully sure what to comprehend from hearing “stuff” clearly. Pheonitia darted eyes to the baker, was he the one Sara was talking about? Wait… right! The pleasantries that social etiquette required were often nuisances, but she got it now and after a quick sip of tea she wagged her finger. – No, don’t think of it as a psychic ability. If it were so I would could have made my point across the baker. All I do is usher thoughts into the streams of magic around us… - She ran her finger along the nose once more, then nodded to herself and continued her train of thought. – It’s like talking really, we can listen because the air around us can carry the sound emitted by the vocal cords so that it reaches our ears. Without air, we would not be able to hear one another. Same way as those that are deft can’t listen, those that aren’t magically attuned can’t listen to the thoughts I usher around me. – The scholar in her could not simply let the subject go without it being addressed, it had to be explained. which she congratulated herself by taking a first bite at the Danish, while unaware if her explanation did more harm than good.

To the question of her being there, that one was probably a simple answer, and quickly she rolled shoulders, shrugging. – It was not so much this town that brought me here… it was the conflict of Soto that made me travel. I'm more than grateful to you now, since not only you helped me but also let me know that people around these parts are not very literate. – She furrowed eyes. – Also… that could lead me into thinking they may not be as magically attuned as well. So, chances are I may be back on the road tomorrow. – It was a disappointing thought to which she let out a low sigh escape her breath. – What about you? – She asked after snapping out of the brief blue moment, and getting back to eating her food energetically.
