Numerous tall, lush trees gave the perfect respite from the heat currently stifling the air. Underneath the leafy canopy, a lone figure sprawled unceremoniously and lay utterly still. Her long form cushioned on the thick grass covering the forest floor, Phedre sighed as she surged inevitably through her dreams towards consciousness. Limbs heavy with sleep and protesting the movement, the earth nymph lazily opened her brown eyes and sat up. Thoughts swirled behind Phedre's soft face, and she contemplated her plans for the day. Loathe though she was to leave the cool shade afforded her by the trees, she knew she should make her way to the city and see what the latest gossip was. Phedre rose to her feet, a soft groan escaping her lips as she rested weight on still-tired limbs and stretched languidly. The forest was always beautiful, but it seemed to thrive in the heat. Walking swiftly among the trees, Phedre stopped every few moments to admire a brightly colored flower or new-born creature. Animal voices mingled with the rustling of brush and leaves, creating a soothing song for her journey, and the nymph raised her own voice to join with the forest around her. It was with a smile on her face that she reached the edge of the woods and peered through the thinning growth at the city ahead. Though it was a peaceful place, the city was still loud and busy to an earth nymph's sensibilities and it always took much of Phedre's will to mingle with the crowd. Bracing herself for conversation, the woman walked from forest to city, the transition seemingly fluid. The heat was worse in the city, but not by much. Sunlight fell through Phedre's soft waves of hair and gave her skin a glimmering sheen, and she brushed her hands over the dress she wore, momentarily self-conscious among so many people. The nymph retreated to a relatively quiet space near an inn, watching the people and activities surrounding her with wide eyes. The tendency to return to the forest was strong, and Phedre hated that she considered it. Although she loved entertaining a few solitary travelers at a time, large numbers of loud people tended to overwhelm her. Nonetheless, she was on a mission for her clan and couldn't afford to be weak and selfish. Her rich brown gaze danced about, searching for a kind face among the crowd. |
