What is being carried to the palace is not an offering, but a tax which has been placed upon the businesses. And the people do not worship the gods. They only wish to obey the land’s monarch, who, in very few years has made Ankgar from a collection of poor villages into the most powerful free force and a center of trade. Of course, the young woman cloaked in the streets probably doesn’t know these facts; Ankgar is not an area of concern for many of Elenlond’s citizens, nor for its deities. But Ankgar is where this one has found herself. And these streets may be emptying out, but they are far from dead. The morning haggling may be over, but there is still business a plenty. The younger children play along the sides of the streets, their mothers walking through the bazaars doing their shopping. And it is one of these children that will be one to break down the Goddess’s disguise. A young boy playfully runs over and grabs at the young woman’s cloak, pulling the hood from her face. He runs over to his mother, laughing. The mother grabs her son’s shoulders and begins to scold him, although it is impossible to make out what she’s telling him from a distance. However, she soon looks up, and her scolding goes silent, a look of shock, and then fear, spreading over her face. She turns and whispers to the nearby guard, who glances at the young woman’s now exposed face, and then quickly runs off towards the castle. And this woman isn’t the only one who has noticed the deity’s presence. Of course, nobody utters that word. That would give away that they know. They continue to whisper amongst themselves, slowly moving away, and before long, the entire area is cleared. The shoppers have all moved down the street several yards, and the shopkeepers have all retreated into the rear of their tents. By this time, the guard has reached the monarch’s chambers, and alerted him to the presence of the Goddess of Water, Midnight Shadow. The monarch, however, does not express the fear that the other citizens have displayed. He is concerned yes. But his reaction is not to cower or to run away, he does not rally the army nor fortify the castle, nor fortify anything else. He simply stands, and begins to make his way down to the square on foot. The only sign of being ready for battle is the presence of his sword at his side, there aren’t even any guards accompanying him. For while she may not know much about where she is or who the ruler is, this man knows exactly who he’s dealing with. |
