Something bad happened in Paxia? I did it.

It is once again that time of the year(or some other time period, I don't remember when the last contest was ATTEMPTED to be held) when Dynami(or more like I) tries to hold a contest! This time it's easy(probably)! It might be fun(debatable)! It's thread has a lot of brackets(LIES)! The point of this contest is... Create a picture, in 8-bit pixel style, of something from Paxia. You can let your imagination run wild with this, but those who can't think of anything to make up, a default option is to take a clan site from AQ and draw it in 8-bit style. However, extra points are given to original content. Rules of the contest: The tool to use is MS-Paint. For those (un)fortunate who don't have MS-Paint, YOU'RE OUT! Okay fine, use whatever default painting program you have. It better not be fancy! The subject has to be Paxia-related. If you want to draw your clan-base, go ahead. If you want to draw a Dynami wailing on an electric guitar on the mountaintop, go ahead. Anything goes as long as it's about something from Paxia. The timelimit for this thing... Oh, let's say... 30 days. I've come to known the apathy of Paxia when it comes to making up stuff in contests, so MAYBE with such a large timeperiod, we could get our FIRST CONTESTANT EVER to join. SO GO NUTS, EVERYONE You can post your art here as well as a future AEF thread once I get someone to go and create that one. Edited by Liveman Ieb, Aug 9 2010, 07:22 AM.

Hey hey, there were contestants in that BBEC contest. I have a sig to prove I beat them all. Or something. Anyway, I'll prolly enter this just because I haven't drawn anything in 8-bit style for quite some time. Edited by DigDog, Aug 9 2010, 07:58 AM.

Wow, that's pretty good actually. Looks just what you'd expect to see on a NES game. |

Okay, after 7 futile attempts at creating something good, I give up. I don't want to post something half-assed though so I'll just stay out of this. I just don't have what it takes to draw 8-bit stuff. |

I just zoom in all the way and draw pixel by pixel. That's how I made this:

Why did you post a screenshot of Maniac Mansion? Just kidding. This is amazingly close to the original. Lacks moon and stars though. Curse you, now I have to come up with something better. Edited by DigDog, Aug 13 2010, 11:27 AM.

I don't know why but on second glance the clan base doesn't really fit into your picture. It doesn't look as 8-bitty as the landscape. |

The base looks more 16-bit to me. Also, darn, I thought I had this contest in the bag. |

I don't think it's THAT 16-bit. For comparison, Megaman 4 intro screenshot:

Whatever. YOU THINK I'M GOING TO LET YOU WIN THIS, LIVEMAN IEB? I don't think so. ![]() I fear it's not 8-bit pixelish enough though. Looks more like something for a MS Paint drawing contest. Edited by DigDog, Aug 13 2010, 01:28 PM.

MAYBE. Lucky me that it says nowhere in the rules that it has to look like a NES game. |

NES graphics are the standard upon which all 8-bit graphic assumptions are made. |

I think old DOS games like Maniac Mansion also count as 8-bit. |

Ain't I a cool cat?

Actually neither of the 2 pics after DD's Dynami worm look 8 bit at all. In fact they're not even pixelated enough to be 16-bit. And I would know I've been force fed videogames since I was around 7 and NES and old DOS graphics are ETCHED INTO MY SOUL WITH THE FIERY FIRE OF PRIMAL FLAME. |

Stand back everyone, we got an expert here. So how would you suggest we improve ourselves in order to make our stuff look more 8-bit? |

That's what I meant with my "I fear it's not 8-bit pixelish enough though. Looks more like something for a MS Paint drawing contest.". It just didn't feel right. Sure, it looked good and trashy enough to feel oldschool, but not "pixelish". I pondered a bit and here's what I came up with: Lower resolution. Back then you barely had, what, 320x240? Or whatever, ours are 800x600, way too much. ... no, that's not entirely it. It's not actually the resolution but the size of the objects and characters compared to the resolution. Too many pixels used for objects. Take these three examples. That's pixelish. You have to see the pixels. You have to zoom enough when making a picture. Minimalism, but not in the style we two used. ...I think. Oh and LC, you're the only one who had an unhealthy dose of video games over the past 20 years. Let me just mention that I played with 5.25" floppy disks and games that are older than I am. CGA graphics. 4 colors man. Purple, a dirty cyan, black and gray. The good old times. Sokoban. Tower Toppler. Oh god stop me. I will try that Igneus picture again. Proper pixels this time. And if it kills me, it will be awesome. Edited by DigDog, Aug 16 2010, 07:57 AM.

Well with the unsurprising lack of applicants, Dynami once again wins by a landslide. I would hand prizes to the best artwork here but let's just say that you all win(except Liveman because he is a jerk)! DYNAMI CHAMPION BY DEFAULT We need to make a poster with that. I bet it'd attract all the cool kids to our camp. Knowing that they can be winners without even doing anything. |
