Those who enjoyed playing Dwarf Fortress might find this an enjoyable game as well.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

It's comparable to Adventure Mode in Dwarf Fort, except much more complex(for obvious reasons). You can choose a race, class and if possible, a God to worship.

Different gods like different things. Like Trog, who is pleased for every monster that you kill. Or Xom, who finds it hilarious if you test unknown potions or scrolls, either in battle or end up cursing or harming yourself. And when Xom is happy, you will be happy. Hopefully.

Dungeon Soup Wiki for tips and stuff.

I recommend playing the Tutorial before you jump into the game.

Also, there are no graphics packs for this game. That I know of.
But I like ASCII so yeah.

Then why are they mocking us with these screenshots?

Edit:

NEVERMIND, IEB IS JUST INATTENTIVE.

There, download a graphic version with a tileset.

Now that I think about it, first I played this it WAS the graphic pack one.

Forgot all about it though.

The game just seems more entertaining without graphics.

Eh? Somehow I cannot understand that. I mean sure, graphics aren't everything but when I have the choice I pick the one that actually has pictures instead of symbols for everything.

Yes.

Also.

Last night, I got to the furthest I have gotten in the game so far. Dungeon level 8 or something.

It was full of orcs. After a horrible kill spree, I got attacked by an ogre, that I then zap somewhere with a teleport wand. While later, it comes back and this time I kill it.

Then Xom decided that I'm boring, and turned me into a living rock statue. Another ogre came, I didn't have any wand zaps left, and couldn't outrun it.

The ogre smashed me to bits.

Xom thought it was hilarious.

Sounds like fun. I starved on level 2. I kept chopping up corpses for Trog instead of eating them. At least he had his fun.

For starter characters, I suggest picking some race that eats raw meat.

I play only with kobolds, so that allows my character to eat both raw and rotten meat.

So all I have to do is go in, and kill everything in sight. Eat until I'm engorged, profit.

I had a minotaur, playing the tutorial. He eats raw meat but only if hungry, but doesn't eat rotten meat. So yeah, I had no source for raw meat and my other meat was rotten.

So today I found out that kobold meat isn't only poisonous but also doesn't remove your hunger. I ate two of them goddamned chunks and all I got was a major sickness. Called death.

I recall that all flesh that's poisonous will be mentioned when you check them out from your inventory. So if you cut up something you haven't ever done before, and aren't sure if it's safe or not, you could just check it out.

At least I recall that poisonous meat is SOMEHOW separated from safe meat. It might have been the color it's written in. I somehow recall kobold meat showing up green in the inventory.

No no, I knew it was poisoned, but I was surrounded by enemies, low on HP and very hungry. So the only way to survive would have been eating something and then calling in a favor from Trog (which is only possible when not hungry). The poisonous food not being nourishing foiled my plan though.

Not berserk. Hand of Trog. And maybe calling a helper if I'm still unhungry afterwards.

...is unhungry even a word?

Anyhow, my newest hero was slaughtered by an orc wizard. Ass.

ARGH! My level 7 Minotaur died while trying to deactivate a blade trap. That thing did effing 26 points of damage!

Triple post, for great justice.

Look who I found in this dungeon.

That ass turned himself invisible and started to shoot frost missiles and fireballs at me. Even burned a scroll in my inventory. That was the last straw, I went berserk and kept hitting the air where the attacks came from.

The result pleases me.

Okay, trying to play Stone Soup now. I'll let you know how horrible I am at it as soon as I can figure out how to make it stop being full screen. :confuzzled:

Hmm, I'll have to try that in a bit. I got frustrated after pushing every button combo I could think of and gave up.

There is also a line called "tile_full_screen" in the file "settings/tiles_options.txt"... you might try to set this to "false" and see if something happens.

What would happen? I'll do it but only because I trust you.

So I just tested it and it is indeed the solution for your problem. Open the "tiles_options.txt" and change the line that might look like this(at least it does for me):

"# tile_full_screen = true"

into

"tile_full_screen = false"

and save it. Make sure you remove the "#" otherwise the line will get ignored.

Alright "ctrl + Q" prompts the quit option. You have to type yes.

I'm still working on the full screen thing. It's not working. *sigh*

Just asking.

What's keeping you from playing while the game is full-screen'ed?
