Something bad happened in Paxia? I did it.

The age of blade and magic may have begun to pass into history, with the rise of technology, which brought forth improvement to the lives of men with new innovations, methods of travel and trade, but at the twilight of it, there were still those who lived by the old ways. Adventurers, mercenaries, those who lived in the niches of the society enjoying a rare time of peace after decades of constant war, still existed despite being a dying breed. There was little left to discover, no more battles for them to freely enter without drawing attention from the new government, which was now working towards a calmer world. Of course just as there has always been a demand for those of certain skills, able to work in the shadows and commit their less-than-lawful deeds, they could still find something to do. It was no longer something you found nailed on a board outside of a city asking for help. The information had moved underground, it started as rumors, brewed as it passed from a person to another until finally it came together as a coherent message. The particular message of this story, the start of it all, came as a simple request for able people willing to assist in a recovery mission. The details still however were unclear, save for a location. Krovesport. Though less of a place of rogues and thieves in the ever modernizing world, it still served as a gathering place for those of questionable origins, merchants arrived and sold their goods that hail from far, sometimes forbidden places, those beyond the Line, some touched by Chaos itself, twisted and evil, with minds of their own, whispers that could only be heard of those able, who were now few, the rare, the chosen one's who would never find the guidance to succumb to their will. The message had told for those interested to arrive there, to the piers of Krovesport, at an exact time in the night, a shady request that was for sure, but the promise of great reward should have been more than enough to convince even the most wary of person. The moon shone bright in the night sky, stars twinkling in the sky as its only companions, and the sea wind blew harshly towards the city. It was cold, but not dangerous for seafare, which was vital for this mission. A lone figure shivered on the peer, worn with heavy robes which still the wind assaulted. The person stood warily, paranoid even as they turned around every few seconds, to look through the thick fog that hang around the peer. Besides the moon there was no source of light save for the embers of a long pipe that belonged to a man sitting in a sailboat, seemingly unaffected by the cold weather. He was a sailor, and knew better, this cold was nothing compared to the places he had sailed elsewhere. The boat was not a large one, but more than enough for this task. He asked no questions, he had been paid for a simple task, which was to sail back and forth between Krovesport and their destination. It was all he needed to know, too much information was still fatal around Krovesport. Even if it was not the outlaws who were interested in it, but the government. There suddenly was noise and motion through the fog, footsteps that were coming closer, tapping against the wooden pier. The two people waiting turned their attention towards it, to see just who would be arriving. The person on the peer lowered the hood on their robes, revealing their face. It was a woman in her forties, her face worn and tired of worry. But just this once, there was no doubt on her mind. The help she had requested had arrived. |

It just had to be a foggy night. The weather always seems to have a sixth sense for creating theatric situations. It was a miracle that it wasn't also a full moon. The man has been walking through Krovesport for the last 30 minutes. It was already night when he arrived here and finding the piers in this fog wasn't easy. His sub-par sense of direction didn't help, neither did the fact that he couldn't find a person to ask for directions. He was able to make out some silhouettes in the fog now and then, but they faded when he got closer to them. Maybe people just don't want to meet an eight foot tall man at night. The giant axe strapped to his back probably didn't help either, even though it was covered - like the rest of the mans body - by the skin of a bear that must have been even bigger than him. After another 15 minutes of walking through the fog he finally arrived at the piers. It was a close call, the time stated in the message was near, but the man didn't let himself get worked up. When he walked past empty landing stages and moored ships he finally found a silhoutte that didn't vanish as he got closer. It seemed to be a person wearing robes, standing near a boat with another person in it. The robed person gained the attention of the man by lowering the hood so he walked towards it and realised that it was a woman. Not that it would change anything. He stopped about a meter away and looked her in the eyes. "Greetings, my name is Votan. Are you the person asking for assistance on this... recovery mission?" |

The woman approached warily, like an animal facing a predator, although in the completely wrong direction. Her eyes looked through the giant of a man from head to toe, with the same sort of eyes that people had after purchasing something from a shady street store. The look on her face showed a mix of doubt, fear, yet some hope that it'd be alright. "Yes, so good for you to have come." Her eyes again fixated on the man, this time the ax on his back. "So good. I'm... I'm going to save my introduction for later, I'm sure you understand." Turning her attention from the man, she now looked at the fog behind him, as if expecting more forms to appear from it's midst any second. "I'll wait until the rest arrive." She let out a small laugh, and instantly snapped her mouth shut, looking afraid again. "If they make it." |

That message said Krovesport…I’m almost certain. Where the hell is everyone? For that matter…where the hell am I? The fog is thick and takes on the appearance of angry arms choking out the lives of those who dare walk into it. The people dance in and out of the thick mess like ghosts. Maybe it is simply the alcohol that causes her to have these thoughts. Leaning back against the storefront, she unclips the gourd and takes another swig before propping her feet on the pickle barrel in front of her. She has already forgotten the fact she was here for a reason. Her mind wanders as she glances ahead at a figure appearing and disappearing into the arms of the fog like a pulsating breath. It is too big to be a normal human. It is captivating and seems to capture her lapsing attention span. She finds herself walking now, though her feet take on a mind of their own as she follows this specter of the night. Time is all but lost to her until the clanking of the wooden boards beneath her sandals snap her back into reality and stop her in her tracks. It is luck that this happens to be the place she is looking for…the piers of Krovesport. Perhaps that specter was sent to lead her to this place. The figure moves down the pier toward a another cloaked figure. The fog lifts slightly, revealing a huge bear. She rubs her eyes in disbelief. It couldn’t possibly be a bear…or could it? She unclips the gourd taking another refreshing swig. Bear or not, she is here to make some money. She straightens out her armor and fluffs out her hair before walking up to the bear and the woman. “Greetings. I am Asteria of Amazon,” she states with a curtsy while glancing out of the corner of her eye. I had better keep my eye on that bear. “I trust you are the one seeking help for a mission?” |

A woman was walking in an empty street of Krovesport. She had a bow in a hand and was ready to fire arrows, even though she knew that the fog was too thick to aim properly. Especially if her ennemy is a rogue. She stopped walking and realized that she was lost. Being lost in Krovesport at night in a thick fog was a very bad idea. She could be robbed ten times without knowing it before being killed if she didn't find her way back in the folowing minute. She saw three shades a few meters in front of her. The shades of men. Suddenly, the men ran in her direction, a dagger in each hand, with the intention to kill her. She only had the time to bend down to avoid a deadly blade. Then, she ran away. "I may looked like a coward", she thought,"I wouldn't have a chance against three rogues". As she didn't hear the sound of running people behind her, she stopped running. Then, she realized that she was on the piers of Krovesport. She saw the two men and a troll in front of her. No. Two women and something or someone that looked like a giant man. She aimed the people with her bow and walked slowly and carefully toward them, better be careful at Krovesport. When she was close enough, she saw that the people didn't seem to want to rob or kill her and she said : "Greetings, I am WolfEye. You are the ones that are seeking help for a mission, am I right ?" |

The remaining two of her hired help arrived soon after one another, but it still had not gotten her to loosen her tongue for the first of the two to arrive. She had merely given a nod to her after the introduction, before again trying to see through the fog, with the sort of look that someone would have with a lost puppy, just waiting for it to appear in sight from the dark. With the last of the help on the pier, she moved and shook hands with the newest arrival, revealing how sweaty her hands were, to the varying discomfort of everyone she shook hands with. "So good that you are all here. We have to hurry. Can't be here too long, too dangerous. Have to be fast. No time to waste." After handshaking the three, she began herding them towards the boat, making sounds like she was working with farm animals. Odd behavior, but they still got on the boat, the owner of it taking a good look at them one at a time. The tall man who could probably cleave him in two any given moment. The female warrior who would shame a number of men with her physical appearance. Strong and dangerous, just like the first one, even with the gaudy clothing. Third one was not any softer to look at. These were all warriors. Their contractor finished her work on the pier, opening the knot of the rope that held the boat still. Stumbling onto the boat, and kicking it off the pier, they had officially began the mission. "Elina Merlot. From now on, you do exactly as I say, and nothing else." Her introduction was sudden, as were her moves all of a sudden. With one hand looking through her robe's interiors, she pulled out a small glass sphere, raised it to her lips and by their minute movements, she was whispering to it. She then tossed the glass sphere onto the water, and suddenly the boat was moving. The water around it was moving unnaturally, carrying it forward at a rapid speed. There was no need to steer either. The man owning the boat was there just to make sure the boat would come back, something which she had agreed on as well. The woman was no sorcerer, the water was not moving by some spell, nor was it an innate ability. The water around the boat was alive, for now, until the sphere's power would run out. And it was moving them without fail into the sea, and towards their target. She had simply sat down onto the boat with the others now, looking contempt at just waiting silently for them to arrive. |

The woman does not respond instead simply nods at the introduction. Asteria is ever aware this bear seems to be the one she needs to watch and keeps a watchful eye on him as she takes another swig of the gourd. She leans back onto the dock…feeling far too lazy to be standing here indefinitely, slowly getting annoyed with the wait. Her attention diverts to the shoreline as another woman pops out of the clouds looking like she was ready for a fight. Asteria fights back a snicker as the woman approaches them with a cautiousness that did not go unnoticed. This should be fun. Again, the mysterious draped woman who hired them says not a word, but nods acknowledging this new woman’s introduction. Is she a mute or what? Suddenly, the mysterious woman seems to finally pop to life. Her actions seem robotic. It reminds Asteria of those wind-up dolls she used to have back at the village. Take me to your leader. A smirk forms across her face at the thought as they are herded onto the awaiting boat like farm animals. "Elina Merlot. From now on, you do exactly as I say, and nothing else." the woman replies while shaking their hands. This sudden voice caught Asteria off guard. Wow, it can talk. She watches as Elina pulls out a sphere of glass, whispers to it then throws it into the water. Asteria watches with curiosity. What is the woman doing? And they call me the drunk. The boat lurches forward nearly knocking Asteria off her feet. “Alright! This is what I’m talking about.” She runs to the front of the boat and jumps to the bow, reaching her hands out to her sides as she yells out to the roaring wind, “I’m King of the World!” Asteria briefly enjoys the whipping wind on her face before returning back to the others. “Bear…where’s that bear?” she thinks out loud looking for the bear she vowed she would need to keep an eye on. |

Votan was a little confused by the way the hooded woman was acting, but he figured that if she would have been more confident she probably wouldn't need the help of others. Her intention to wait for the others was also understandable, he also hated it to explain the same thing more than once. So he stood there in the darkness, staring into the fog and waiting for the mysterious rest. Luckily he didn't have to wait long. Soon another person appeared, and boy he wouldn't complain traveling with her. Sure, the way she looked at him was a little weird but he tended to have this effect on other persons. She introduced herself as Asteria, while giving him another weird glance, and the hooded woman welcomed her the same way she did with him. So there was another person to go on this journey. Now it was back to waiting. He was about to say something as another person appeared in the fog. Another women. This must be his lucky day. She seemed a little weird though, pointing this bow at them and glancing around seeming frightened by this place. She soon cut out this behaviour though, and introduced herself to them. Good for her, otherwise he probably would have hurt her. People shouldn't point weapons at him, at least not without a good reason. This must have been the last person of the bunch since the hooded woman began to - let's say "lead" - them onto the nearby ship. The owner of that ship was another one of these persons looking strangely at him, but he was meeting this kind of people almost every day. Must be his manly manliness or something. While Votan was still looking around on the boat the hooded woman suddenly began to speak. "Elina Merlot. From now on, you do exactly as I say, and nothing else." This was unexpected, but as long as the money is there Votan didn't care. What happened next was even more unexpected. He didn't quite understand what the woman was doing, but he realized it as soon as the boat began moving. "Magic." he mumbled with a disgusted look in his eyes and sat down. This was surely not his preferred way to travel, but it was too late now. This woman, Asteria, seemed to have fun though. What the hell did she drink? |

The sailor responsible for their journey did not care for the antics of the people on board. He was there to make sure they'd get there in one piece, even with the help he was getting from the magic the woman had cast on the water, it was just propulsion, he was the one steering. The waters were quiet, save for the racket from the drunken, ahem, lady. There was little wind, not even birds. They were too far, but then again, where they were going, birds strayed away from. Time passed, and suddenly the man spoke his first gruff words. "There it is." Fog gave away to a shape in the distance, ever closing onto them. It was a small island, and on it was a tower. It stood tall and in good condition, and most of all, it stood menacing. Elina again dug for something under her robes and pulled out something. It was hard to say what it was, it was almost as if it was there but the eye strayed away from it. A dark spot, held in her hand. Again with the whispers, and the spot shattered, black spots drifting around them, dissipating until they were all gone. "Get us to the shore, fast." "You got it, ma'am." While she wanted to get their job done fast, the man just wanted the whole thing to be over as soon as possible. The boat was soon on a sand beach, with Elina leaping out of the boat as if she was driven to a frenzy, splashing about as she stumbled onto the shallow water and had to drag herself out on all fours. With little taste for dignity, she just turned to her paid associates and to the best of her ability, explained their job as simply as possible. "We're going into that tower, to get some things. Your job is to stay on guard and make sure we get there, I get there, without trouble. Should be nothing to worry about though, we have about a hour before our protection fades away and we're... Noticed." Truly she was a woman with little ability of lying. |

"Noticed? What does that mean? Noticed by what? Or who?" asked Votan and ignored the antics the woman made when getting out of the boat. You can ignore a lot when the person doing these things pays you well. He jumped out of the boat himself, with a sigh of relief. Travelling by boat was bad enough, but a boat driven by magic? That was really testing his limits. "I'd prefer to get as much information as possible. The more information, the better protection, the higher the chance we will all get through this unharmed." He took a look around the place while he adressed these words towards Elina. This island surely wasn't the nicest place to be in the middle of the night. Why couldn't she haven taken us here in broad daylight? Edited by DigDog, Aug 31 2010, 09:27 AM.

The damp air and gentle waves were fairly comfortable considering her normal standards for sleeping quarters. Asteria fights as much as she can before finally succumbing to the sleep that beckons her. She doesn't mind, curling up next to the bear for warmth and grasping on to the gourd to discourage any thieves from stealing the magic brew. The boat lurches as it lands on the shore, jarring Asteria from her sleep. She blinks a few times trying to adjust her eyes to the new surroundings and licks the drool from the corner of her mouth. Asteria listens to the woman speaking and takes a few swigs from the gourd. Setting it to her side, she squints to get a better fix on the distance to the tower. "How long a journey to the tower would you say?" Edited by Spanish Inquisition, Nov 28 2010, 11:58 PM.
