This story, Insanity of the Mind, is a story about the Night Lords Legion before the Horus Heresy on a small agro world that has been infiltrated by a dark xenos breed. The story tells the story of Simon Spurrier's canon charrie Zso Sahaal from the lord of Night. The story is about the limits of the mind and the hidden fear in all of us that surfaces when we least expect it.

Insanity of The Mind

The night sky of Skorri V was pitch black and had absolutely no lights at all. The small cities around the agricultural world had lumalites every few feet so as to keep a hint of light fluttering around. The cities were walled as to keep the nighttime predators that stalked the wide and vast forest areas of the outer city limits. The citizens of these cities never traveled after night and if so traveled in four or fives and armed. Fear was an absolute in every person’s heart for the sixteen hours of darkness the planet provided for night. Though no one ever dared to leave their beloved cities for fear of the outside world kept them barred inside. This, however, did not bar the actions of the esteemed Night Lord Legion. Talonmaster Zso Sahaal watched as his Raptors all lined up in orderly step. His armor was the shade of the darkest midnight blue and his helmets eyes glowed with a faint yellow glimmer. His skull shaped facemask just help to instill the fear his legion used to submerse their foes in wide spread panic. “My Raptors, we have arrived here in response to a communiqué that was sent to our strike cruiser. It seems this planet is subject to torment from an unknown race of xenos. Our job is to stalk within the shadows and flush out these infidels. Use fear, my Raptors, for it shall be your greatest ally within this planet of shadows. “Raptors! Disperse,” with that order his Raptors all melted into the shadows in pairs of twos on a mission to flush out this unknown enemy. Zso himself stared off into the pitch black of night and grinned. Tonight would see fear and blood in their natural habitats. Placing his hand on his bolter, Mordax Tenebrae (a skull mouthed bolter built and customized specifically for him and given to him by his Primarch), Zso set out into the night. The night air was still and the dew point had reached the point to where it met with the relative humidity making the air dense with water. Though this had no effect on Zso as he moved through the dark forests. Running on all fours he seemed to be an oversized grizzly bear like the ones on Terra. His yellow eyes were all that could be noticed about him as he stalked through the old wood. Zso then stopped. His acute hearing had picked up a faint rustle. Standing now, Zso then murmured, “Prey Sight.” With this his eyes and helmet optics were automatically switched to a different lens that was the inheritance of the Night Lords through their gene seed. This ‘Prey sight’ gave the Night Lords unparalleled sight into the conditions of the night. It allowed them to see as good as if it was broad daylight. Zso tensed and grinned as he saw that he , the hunter, was being hunted by his prey. Zso then melded into the nearby shadows and that’s when the inhuman screaming began. He materialized out of seemingly nowhere and slit the throat of his first stalker with relative ease. Thick, blue blood, twisted with specks of black leaked spurted from the wound. Zso then carefully laid the body down as to not alert his other hunters. Looking down he got his first look at his enemies. They were Eldar, of that he was sure, but they were hideously twisted as if they had strewn from their path of perfection. Zso put this thought aside as he moved on to his next target. They were somewhat aware, he could tell from their carefully poised postures they knew something was amiss. Zso then moved on to his next victim this time slashing straightforward with his claw tipped gauntlets. His right arm pierced the Eldar’s midsection and burst out the other covered in gore and blood. The Eldar mouthed a silent gasp of inscrutable pain and the others began to focus. They turned his way and fired. Lances of fire flew at him and Zso reacted. He used the body as a meat shield and then twirled away to disappear again. The next time he revealed himself he unleashed Mordax Tenebrae upon them. Each bullet was specifically blessed to trace the intended target until it made contact. Zso fired in a low and high angle to allow none to escape. The bullets made a thudding sound as they connected with xenos flesh and wide gaping holes appeared as the bullets tore the Eldar apart. Then Zso felt a pain pierce his right shoulder. Turning around he saw that an Eldar, presumably the leader of this group, had sliced through his left shoulder with a wicked curved sword that seemed to pulse with forbidden power. Zso pulled away and grimaced as the sword slid free. Though the pain would not go away. He looked and saw that the wound would not heal. Clenching his teeth, he drew his own chain blade and went on the offensive. He slashed at different angles, testing the Eldar’s swordsmanship. He slid his hand down his sword’s angles and switched his direction of attack. This seemed to catch the Eldar unaware and he pushed forward with his advantage. He unleashed a right feint but followed through a curved right thrust and then he stepped back to parry one of his enemies blows. Ducking below he then slashed forward and listened as the teeth of his sword bit into the corrupted flesh of the xenos scum. Large chunks of gore flew back and blood leaked and poured out in gallons as Zso pushed in with all his might. The sword tore through the Eldar’s torso with a sickening plop. The xeno’s upper body half fell cold and bleeding to the dirty forest floor. Entrails leaked out vital juices as the xenos finally died. Zso breathed roughly as he again noticed that the wound would not heal. He then began to feel dazed and out of conjunction with the world. His eyesight became blurred and he could no longer hear. His mouth was dry and his throat felt parched. His hearts began to slow down and he lost all feeling with the rest of his body. He finally fell into the inevitable oblivion.

Where am I? You are here. Where is here though? You are within your own mind. My mind? Who am I? And who are you? I, we, are you. We are your aspects and emotions. Your most deep desires and your worst fears. We are your anti existence as much as you are you. I am Zso Sahaal. Yes. We happy to see you understand us. But I don’t. I don’t understand where I am and why I am here. You are here because you merely are. You are within your primal part of your mind. The mind you lost during your change into a Night Lord. We are you. And this is your world. I want to leave this place. Now. Ah, you see Zso, as we are you, we also control this world and we will not let you leave. why is this? What have I done to you? Nothing. We merely have not been entertained in quite a while and you are a most peculiar subject. You believe in an emperor who does nothing for you. He has left your legion to the wolves. You are nothing in his eyes. These are lies. I am loyal to our emperor as he is to us. He would not forsake us merely for the sake of leaving us out to dry. But he has Zso. Can you not see this? He has forsaken you, your Legion and your beloved Primarch. What if we told you that we could give you the power to change and alter this galaxy the way you, Zso Sahaal see fit? What if we offer you more power than even your beloved emperor wields? I would then state you are a heretic and this is heresy. Is it Sahaal ? Is the belief of another deity or power heresy? If this is so then why worship your emperor when he himself has forsaken any other methods of belief. He is all knowing and omnipotent. You are naïve Zso. Use your head and think about it. He named Horus the Warmaster and why not your beloved Konrad? Why not you or Curze. He plays favorites Zso and this is known to all. You know it. He has left the Night Lords out and seeks to make your Primarch pay for his inhuman methods of combat. This cannot be so! He would never do such a thing. The Night Haunter gave his humanity up in the name of the emperor so why would he forsake us, his loyal sons. The Luna Wolves are no better than we. Why Horus over my Primarch . Surly this is faulty for Konrad Curze is mightier than Horus and plays upon more than brute strength. Ah you now see the predicament that you are within. What shall it be young Zso. Shall we indulge you in our ways or will you succumb to the fear of betraying your Emperor and forsaking your own beloved legion.

Zso considered this. What these voices said was true and seemed correct. His Legion had been robbed of its glory and this was a sin but Konrad had been content with not being the star the emperor had wanted in the first place. Sahaal thought deeply and then a saying his Primarch had told him drifted into his mind, “Fear is not only a tool against our opponent but a source of power that can elevate our faith in the most dire of times. It may seem lowly to consider this but, Zso you should remember this for the better of your chapter." Zso then made his choice. No! I shall not be your pawn. Zso then forced himself out of the void he had been trapped within. The cold and humid night air met him as he aroused from his sleep. Brother Nivr leaned over him and checked the injury in his shoulder. "it is deep Captain but the apothecary shall be along soon,"he muttered. "How long was I out and what is the current status of our mission," he quickly asked. his shoulder burnt like fire and his head throbbed terribly. "For a few hours sir. The xenos has been eradicated and a Thunderhawk is enroute to extract us,"Nivr stated. Nodding Zso turned and thought about what he had been through. He had made the right decision and he hoped that he would never have to face that kind of insanity again. Looking up he noticed the moon had finally revealed itself and it was painted a bloody red.

Somewhere deep in the warp a twisted and corrupt voice yelled out in despair and rage as it relentlessly pounded upon its subjects for its own defeat by the mind of a Night Lord and its pathetic loyalty to the false emperor it obeyed.
