So...been playing the steam version again tonight of FF7 and its that time....Next thing to do on the game for me is going to the TotA and already am trying to find other things to do than continue the story lol

I just really dont wanna take the story further knowing what is going to happen in about another 1/2hours of gameplay =/.

Yes, I suffered from it too. That's why I bought a used memory card and finished the game that way so I still haven't finished playing Disc 2 (I have played the Hojo onto the end and watched it online on youtube). Eventually maybe I will be able to finish it.

a story of a love
Disc 1 is by far the best disc of the game.

FFVII starts off with a boom, and keeps getting better and better during the entire first disc. It's like a magical whirlwind that keeps you hooked the entire time.

IMO, FFVII has the best beginning of any game I've ever played. It literally sucks you right in from the very beginning -- Aerith's face in that pool of mako; Cloud jumping off the train to bomb the reactor. This is a mysterious world in full motion with complex and interesting characters. You can't help but get hooked. Then, meeting Aerith spurs an entirely new set of events, sending you directly to the Shinra headquarters... and, well, you know the rest.

Don't get me wrong, I love discs 2 and 3 as well. But disc 1 is by far my favorite disc (yes, mostly because of Aerith :aeris: ). Her unique contribution as a Cetra, and as an outspoken, intelligent female, made her extremely valuable. Truly irreplaceable -- exactly how Square Enix wanted her :aeris:

During discs 2 and 3, I always felt a void with Aerith gone. Unfortunately, I think that was Square Enix's goal -- a goal they succeeded in accomplishing.

I always find myself thinking:
"What would Aerith do or say in this situation?"
"How would she contribute to what is going on?"

Luckily, even with Aerith gone in the physical world, we know Cloud admits to thinking about her :aeris: , and he constantly seeks her presence, even in the credits of the original, classic version of Advent Children.

:cleris:

Cloud Strife :cloud: :
I think I’m beginning to understand…
An answer from the Planet…the Promised Land…

I think I can meet her… :aeris: there.

I have finished the first disc so many times but the rest of the game... :dunno: Certainly not as often. On Disc 1 I'm all right until the music of The Ancient City starts playing. That's when I get this uneasy feeling. Since it's a part of the FF7 experience it doesn't make me want to stop playing, though. Everything that happens earlier on Disc 1 always feels so precious. Even if meeting Aerith and having her join the party makes me want to cry "Oh no, you're doomed now.... but let's enjoy Disc 1 together. :fangirl: "

Glad to see am not the only one.

I i kinda wish i could do tha same thing but since this is my first play though on the steam version i dont have a save point i can legit jump to atm to avoid this for now...guess i will just go around beating up more random encounters for a few more days before going further.

(beating up Hojo is always fun).

I don't know... maybe...

Last time I played the game was the first time I fully enjoyed the experience. I used to be disappointed in the game (my expectations were too high at first) and I didn't play it as often as other FFs because the fandom made it difficult for me (when there are fandom wars and all that, I CAN get turned off or intimidated by the official material, hence avoiding a replay or rewatch *it also happens if the official material is a rollercoaster of feelings for me... I have issues dealing with strong emotions, I guess... now I realize FF7 had that to some degree for me, on top of the fandom stuff... I also can't get myself to rewatch Full Metal Alchemist, too much feelings*).

Anyway, I vaguely remember how it was when I first played the game. I remember thinking Cloud felt like a silent character, not really interesting (honestly, what the heck was I smoking... he's actually the kind of character that I fall in love with... no-nonsense badass who is actually a big softie and a dork inside and who suffered too much in life *he's also messed up so he IS interesting*).

I RUSHED the game like crazy (the last boss kicked my ass after 35 hours of what I thought was a cakewalk). I also didn't like or play much the mini-games/sidequests. To be honest, some of them are rough (shooting game) or boring (mog game, basket ball game, fort condor *the concept of the mini-game is fine, it's just... the execution*). A remake could improve the mini-games very much, I think (because really, deep down, most of them can be fun but they need improvement to be nicer to play).

My last replay changed my opinion a bit as I wanted to complete the game as much as possible. I finally bothered with the chocobo races/breeding. I beat the shooting game to get Aerith and Cid's weapons... and felt awesome because it's a REALLY hard and frustrating mini-game. I went places and got items (like really cool materias) I never could go/get before because I didn't bother with chobobo breeding at first. Doing all that made me appreciate the game MUCH more. Even if I do think those mini-games are still rough or can get boring.

Chobobo races for example. I wish you could quit the race once you won instead of waiting for the other racers. I feel similarly about Blitzball in FF10. I used to not get a thing about this mini-game. It was frustrating so I always dropped it after the first match. Once I FINALLY understood how to play, it got boring because my team easily kicked asses and the match is 10 minutes long... too long when there is no challenge. I guess Triple Triad is the only mini-game I TOTALLY enjoyed once I understood how to play... and I didn't get it for a LONNNGGGG time.
I also think the materia system isn't as fun as it could be. I wish there was more fun combinaisons possible. Don't get me wrong. It IS a nice system... but it could be even better, that's all.

And well... about Disk 1... Well, the thing is... I played more the first disk overall than the rest of the game... because, like I said, I had issues replaying FF7 so I stopped often near the end of the first disk... or in Midgar.

But my opinion about disk 1 used to be that... it wasn't a really eventful disk. You keep chasing Sephiroth and that's pretty much why you travel around. Not really exciting.
Add to this the fact that I often stopped at disk 1... and I ended up viewing disk 2 as a much more interesting/exciting/fresh part of the game.

Now... well... I think disk 1 has its merits. One thing first, Aerith is alive/playable in it. The entire opening/Midgar section is fantastic (funny that Toriyama was responsible for it... the one guy everyone blames for FF13 and its sequels... and yet, most people loved Midgar... and Aerith *I heard Toriyama was in charge in developping her character, funny that he got obsessed about Lightning, a character voiced by the same actress, years later*). Meeting your characters is actually rather nice.

There are good moments for a lot of your party members (Barret, NANAKI *the scene with his father was pretty touching*, Cait Sith, Yuffie if you do her quest at this time... Aerith too of course but I still believe she needed more moments... Cid, Tifa, Vincent and Cloud get their moments more in disk 2 however). There are genuinely good/memorable parts after Midgar (flashback in Kalm, many cosmo canyon scenes *the holographic space scene, Nanaki's father and the peaceful campfire scene*, the date and everything til the end of the disk *I could also add the fanfare in Junon, Dyne, reaching Nibelheim, meeting Zack's parents and Cait's betrayal*).

So, yeah... Disk 1 isn't too uneventful. It's just that... once Aerith dies, things feel pretty different. You get lost in the mountains, loses Cloud (and gets to control 2 other characters for a while), get captured, have death (meteor) hanging over your head constantly, discover what is the problem with Cloud, fight huge monsters, return to Midgar, return to Aerith's dying place, Shinra get demolished... THEN, you get to kick Jenova and Sephiroth's asses. And the ending is pretty gloomy with a touch of hope at the last minute (I ADORE this moment when the lifestream comes out, the music is also wonderful... and it all ends with Aerith's smiling face... fans often voiced how the ending was too abrupt... but I find it beautiful and fitting).

It all seems different than Disk 1. Disk1 mostly feels like a nice roadtrip. Disk2 is a bumpy road (which of course appears as more eventful, the "follow Sephiroth" pattern is kind of broken), a fight for survival. Both are cool in the end. In fact, I think it may be why this game is beloved. It has humor, love and fun and it has doom and gloom stuff. Any sad moment get sadder/more effective if the adventure has its share of fun.

Now, do I dread the end of Disk1 ? I guess, I do, in a way. Once Aerith leaves, I'm like "oh crap, oh crap... this is it". It definitively feels like a big change and it's true that Aerith is missed after that (both as a playable character and as a... well... character). Like, when you get to Icicle Inn and you find all the recording that Aerith's parents made... you wonder how she would have reacted to that. And how would she have reacted to Cloud's departure ? And so on...
But, well... I also find it exciting to get to the other part of the adventure. Especially since it means you get access to more sidequests and stuff (plus, you get to explore the freaking OCEAN... how cool is that ? How many RPGs did that ? I can't name any).

I can relate not wanting to go past disk one, I drag it out as much as I can. I do my leveling on disk one. Aeris is just one of my favorite characters, I can never really force myself to take her out of the party, even though I have played the game more times than I can remember, and know what's going to happen.

I've even gotten to use Great Gospal more than once (without setting out to do so.)

I agree, during the rest of the disks, there was something missing. Although, I remember wanting to get revenge the first time I played it, so that made it interesting enough.
