a story of a love
I never regularly watched Sailor Moon growing up, but it has always held a special place in my heart. I love the animation so much!

Anyway -- celebrating Sailor Moon's 20th anniversary, they released a new series, "Sailor Moon Crystal". This new television series will more closely follow the original books than the '90s TV show.

This has renewed my interest in Sailor Moon.

I have a few topics I'd like to discuss:

1. I prefer the 1990s animation to the new animation. The opening of the '90s animation is so much better than the new opening, IMO!

What do you all think (for those of you who have seen both openings)?

2. I know the American TV show of the 1990s changed a lot from the original Japanese TV show.

What sort of major changes (besides gay characters) did the American anime change/edit?

What did the Japanese version change from the book(s)?

Would is be worthwhile to watch the Japanese version?

3. What do you think about all the comparisons?

Original books

vs.

1990s Japanese TV show

vs.

1990s edited American TV show

vs.

"Sailor Moon Crystal" (which will more closely follow the original books)

1. I prefer the newer animation as well as the new beginning. I especially love the new art style more than the old style.

2. The american version left out some of the story, not just gay characters(whether it be the lesbians or gay villains in the show) they left it out.

I'd honestly recommend reading the original books, it did not leave anything out luckily. But of course sailor moon crystal is supposed to follow them more.

3. Read the original books, or watch sailor moon crystal. They're both supposed to be pretty much exactly the same without anything being cut. Which is really good.

Honestly, I'm super happy with sailor moon crystal. I'm glad we get to see sailor moon in its uncut glory in anime form.

I like that Sailor Moon Crystal follows the original books more.

However, I totally prefer the 1995-2000 animation style.

Also -- one might argue that if the changes hadn't been made to the 1995 American version of Sailor Moon, it either 1) wouldn't have reached our shores and 2) wouldn't have been as popular

Many fans were introduced to the TV show *BEFORE* the books.

So despite the TV show not being exactly like the books, many fans fell in love with the 1995 TV show first. It's a weird dilemma -- people falling in love with a TV show that is not only altered from the Japanese version, but is also different from the original books. This creates quite the dilemma, because many fans fell in love with the edited-American TV show and NOT the books.

Interesting to think about, IMO.

Well, since it's coming from Japan, most of the Japanese fans of SM fell in love with the manga before the show. That being the case, it's more in the production companies interest to make an anime that in caters to Japanese fans rather than American fans. Sadly, the influence American fans have on an anime is slim to none unless an American company hires a Japanese production company to make one for them. There are tons of anime that are insanely popular in the US, but didn't do well in Japan, so they were discontinued. That being said, any and all hate geared towards this new series is going to go unheard. At least here in the US.

The animation style of the old series was pretty good imo, but that might just be because it was all done with cel animation. I believe this new series is all digital, so I don't think it has as much as personality as the original. And the 3d rendered sequences are much too obvious when it switches from regular animation to 3D. I understand it's cheaper to do a scene with so many angles that way, but I think it's a bit cheap looking.

All in all, I think it's a step up from the original because it should be more true to the manga and I don't mind the art since that's closer to what the mangaka had in mind for her characters. It's a bit old school since anime these days are more about average height cutesy(moe) types, so long legged super skinny supermodel-ish girls just aren't what people are used to right now.

They're fixing the original sailor moon it seems, as in re-dubbing and fixing all the cuts from it.

It would have been cool if they redid the whole thing to fit widescreen like Dragonball Kai did. They didn't add any art, but remastered and cropped the original to fit widescreen. Having the edges there makes it look cheap to me.

I love both JAP and DUB openings for the old anime.
When it comes to the new opening, I was mad when they did not use the Original song.

I prefer old anime just because I think they were more creative and was better with character reactions/ expressions (that the manga also had) than the new anime.

I'm planning to buy the new sailor moon remaster dvd's when they come out actually.

Also I like Crystal's originality in terms of music and art, but of course the original will always be special and amazing. Especially now that they're getting rid of the censorship, which is important to me, more than anything else.

I am what you call a manga-only purist, since I refused to watch the anime while growing up because the manga changed my life and I was scared that watching the original anime would ruin that 'magic' :P Hence, I can objectively review Crystal as what it is -- a reboot closer to the manga than the 90s anime.

So far, Crystal seems to be following the manga to a tee. I'm interested to see whether they'll expand on the Silver Millennium and Shitennou/Generals storyline -- seeing that the manga barely fleshed them out. But if they'll be sticking close to the source material, I'm guessing that it's probably not very likely.

I tried to watch Sailor Moon Crystal...I really, really tried, but I don't know - something about it felt off. Maybe I'm just not on my anime game anymore?

I, along with many others, prefer the 1995 animation over the new animation.

IMO, the 1995 animation was much more detailed and well-done than the new series. It appears to me that many artists and companies don't put as much effort into animation these days and would rather rely on the computer. Honestly, I hate the computer influenced look of the new series.

Granted, the new series is staying truer to the original magna than the 1995 anime, but I first fell in love with the 1995 anime. I can't help it...nostalgia rules all. Haha.

But to each their own. Animation is an entirely subjective thing.

Come away, oh human child, to the waters and the wild.
I'm with Grey. I adore the original anime above all other versions. In particular, I love the DiC dub, edits and all. That was the version I first connected with, and my love for it has never left me. I tried to write all my thoughts on the other versions, but it was turning into a novel, so I'll just leave it at that.

Also, for anyone else who liked the English dub: the voice actor for Melvin, who also served as the director for multiple episodes, has written a book about the process of dubbing the show. You can buy it here: http://sailormoonreflections.webs.com/
