Cloud Strife Strife noun 1. vigorous or bitter conflict, discord, or antagonism: to be at strife. 2. a quarrel, struggle, or clash: armed strife. 3. competition or rivalry: the strife of the marketplace. 4. Archaic . strenuous effort. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/strife) I just think it's funny how the creators chose this word as his last name. Ironic, isn't it? |

Hmm, I don't know if I would call it ironic. I think appropriate might be a better word. It always seemed to me that his name was a conscious choice meant to represent him and his issues. But yes, I agree that it does fit him. |

^Yeah. It's odd... all of their names seems to match their story. What could Gainsborough mean?

Strife isn't ironic, imo. Strife would be ironic if it was given to someone like Elmayra, I think. Gainsborough is either a reference to any # of locations named it or is a horse, a ship, a studio or it's a reference to Thomas Gainsborough, a famous English landscape/portrait painter. I do think the location or the painter options (he's famous for painting beautiful portraits, particularly his portraits of royalty/nobility--"Blue Boy" is one of the prized pieces of the Huntington Library in California) are the most likely choices, but they could've picked it for any number of reasons? |

*** Oops! I was being sarcastic when I said it was ironic. ![]() Of course the creators purposely gave him the last name Strife. Sorry.

No worries, myfinalfantasy. It's still an interesting point to think about. Thanks for reminding us of it. |

Another interesting note is that "Eris" is the Greek "goddess of strife". |

Wow, that really is an interesting point. Soo, does this mean Aeris is Cloud Strife's goddess?
