Day 20

AVALANCHE walks to Junon. Distance wise, it seems about four days a walk.

This is the earliest point you can encounter and recruit Yuffie.
If Tifa is in your team, Tifa will ask if Cloud knows Yuffie.

Day 24
The Team arrives at Junon, where they save Priscilla from a sea monster. Once you save her, they'll let you spend the night there while she recovers.

odd tidbits: the WEAPONS shop here doesn't actually sell any weapons (unless you count grenades)

Priscillia at first thinks AVALANCHE is a Shinra group. Cloud has to explain that they're not. ... He probably wouldn't have problems like that if he stopped running around in a Shinra uniform.

Day 25
Priscilla gives the group the Shiva Materia and Cloud rides a dolphin.

At this point, Cloud rides a dolphin.

He sees an airship, then we reacha point of the game that just doesn't make much sense to me.

Cloud is mistaken for a Shinra soldier and has to put on a Shinra troop[er uniform to fit into the parade... despite the fact that Cloud is ALREADY WEARING a higher ranking Shinra uniform than the guy that's bossing him around.

Never understood that. Also, I messed up the parade. I hate that thing.

After the parade you have a short amount of time to explore the town before you have to do a send off of Rufus. Because the Airship is down for repairs, he's going to take a boat.

Interesting bits here: One of the Shinra troopers says that Sephiroth arrived in the town two to three days ago and has been killing Shinra soldiers.

At one point, you can find a hidden room that's referred to as a "respectable inn" for guests only. Inside are three shinra troops, three semi-transparent people flashing color, and a dog, they address you as a "known it all ex-SOLDIER." Sadly, there is no explanation on who those people are, why they're transparent and changing color, of how they know you, as they're only there for tutorials.

Eventually you board the ship. Let's say it takes two days to cross the sea. It might just be one though, it's certainly less than three, or Rufus would have waited for the airship to finish it's repairs.

On the ship you find the rest of your party has taken to wearing Shinra disguises as well and you face off against Sephiroth.

Interesting bit: Sephiroth does NOT remember who Cloud is.

This is also where you're given the option to promise Aeris you'll take her on the airship. (In later spinoffs, it says she's afraid of the sky, so I have no idea how that fits in with her wanting to ride an airship.)

the team eventually arrives at Costa Del Sol ...

LOL... that's probably because Cloud can win an updated sword - the Force Stealer - if he scores 100 points or more during the performance for Rufus. ;)

Day 27

The arrival at Costa Del Sol.

Ahh... this is a fun part of the game.

First thing Rufus is yell at Heidegger (who's name I'm not even going to TRY to spell right) then Rufus gets on a helicopter and leave. Then Heidegar beats up random people.

You also encounter Hojo, who's getting a tan while still wearing his lab coat.... the boy ain't right.

You get some info from him and a random passer by tells you that they saw Sephiroth coming out of the ocean with tickets to the Golden Saucer. Picture that for a minute. Now I want fanart of that. Somebody get on it. Sephiroth walking out of the water, soaking wet, holding up his Golden Saucer tickets.

... yeah...

Interesting bits here, and there are quite a few of them...

Hojo claims he didn't know Iflana was dead.

Yuffie takes a part time job selling materia (this is the first time she shows any special interest in materia in the game.)

Barret can be seen trying on his Sailor Suit in the mirror. Yeah, he kept it.

After talking to Hojo, Aeris says she's tired and confused and just wants to go to sleep (making this a CANON day moment of them spending the night.)

Then we have Johnny. At times like this, I feel there might have been a whole Johnny subplot cut from the game.

Your interacts with Johnny depend on whether or not Tifa is on your team or not.

If she's not, you'll find her talking and laughing it up with Johnny wanting to spend time with him and basically dismissing Cloud.

But if Tifa IS on your team, Johnny gets a chance to talk to Cloud. Johnny reminds you that he was your childhood friend and that he was in SOLDIER with you (what!?!). He also calls you a %$#^%$ing murderer and says that from now on, he's just going to pretend he doesn't know you.

This is strange enough even when your character all still think Cloud WAS a member of SOLDIER.

Anyway, Aeris is tried and confused and Tifa wants to spend time with a guy that hates Cloud's guts so they spend the night here.

I suppose if there's any place AVALANCHE would want to spend more time, it's here, but given that they have a strong lead on Sephiroth, and that Hojo and possibly Heidegarr are still hanging around, I think it makes more sense for them to get going quickly.

(Sorry about the short updates recently. I've been busy lately.)

If. Man, I was terrible at that part. :lmao: I really think this is definitely an interesting experiment (?) though, Alan!

I don't think I ever had Tifa in my party at this point, so I don't remember ever speaking to Johnny like that--is that odd discrepancy ever resolved canon-wise? Am I just forgetting something?

I went and looked him up on the FF wikia and acording to them Johnny was a member of SOLDIER, but that really doesn't answer any questions.

If he was in SOLDIER why did he stay so neutral during the game? It's obvious that he and Tifa really liked each other and he would have been great help during the start. Even a low ranking SOLDIER could put up more of a fight than Biggs or Wedge could.

And why would he say he was in SOLDIER with Cloud when he at that moment has ever reason to just call Cloud out on his B.S.

For that matter, why does he call Cloud a &^$#@ing murderer when he seems to have no problems with the rest of AVALANCHE?

Johnny is an interesting and enigmatic character.

He is an interesting character, Johnny is. But he's also more proof of Tifa's personality. Why would she spend time all day with a guy who hates Cloud if she's in love with Cloud? I know this is just a timeline, not a debate. I just find it interesting, and poor Aerith not feeling well, I don't blame her really, if I saw a tanning hojo I might be a bit confused too.

Day 28
The group leaves Cosat del Sol and travels towards the Golden Saucer, they climb a mountain, run along some train tracks, and cross a really long bridge.

This takes about six days.

Day 34
The group arrives in North Corel and learn Barret's tragic story.

He along with every single other person in town EXCEPT Dyne agreed to let Shinra star a reactor in their town. It blew up. The Shinra blamed rebels and burnt the town to the ground. For some reason, everyone blames Barret for this. This happened four years ago, so just a year AFTER Sephiroth went crazy and burned down a different town.

question: Why is Dyne so important that they need to convince him?

Anyway, without sticking around, the group goes up to the Golden Saucer.

There they meet Cait Sith that decides he's going to follow you whether you like it or not!

You also meet Dio.
"The name's Dio. Just call me "Dio."

Dio also tells you that a "boy" around Cloud's age asked if Dio had the Black Materia.

While walking around the Golden Saucer, you run into some Shinra soldiers. The next tiem you see them, somebody has shot holes all through them.

At first you’re accused of the crime and try to explain yourself. Dio actually says "I must be wrong" so looks like you were in the clear, until Cait tells you to Run.

AVALANCHE is caught, tossed into the prison under the Saucer, and here you find out about Dyne and more of Barret's story.

The traveling group finds a nice cab of a truck to sleep in.

Day 35

Trying to get out of the place, you discover Dyne is still alive. He's now the boss of the prison, sports a bad limp, a gun arm of his own, and is psychotically depressed.

Dyne says he wants to destroy everything. When he hears Marlene, his daughter, is still alive, he says he has to fight Barret, because this means he's going to have to go find her and kill her so his wife won't be alone anymore.

and then Dyne kills Barret.

... yeah. I'm going to have to replay this part. I forgot how tough that guy was.

I see you've already gone past 3 1/2 weeks for Disk One, Alan - like the timeline at TLS suggests - and Barret just fought Dyne. ^_^

OOC, how are you determining days? Do you consider it a day when they're shown going to sleep at night, or what?

I've measured the distance from Midgar to Kalm as two days and have been using that for world map traveling time.

Also, unless the story prohibits it, I assume at least one full day will be spent in each town gathering supplies, information, and resting,

Plus anytime they spend the time in-story counts.

Now keep in mind, there's going to be some wiggle room. Sometimes I measure out might not take as long as I say, but then again, other things I think I may be letting them speed through a little too quickly, so I think it balances out.

That sounds totally fair, Alan.

But I have to wonder... in Midgar, you see Cloud and Avalanche go to bed at the Seventh Heaven - that's one night. He falls through the roof of the Church and spends the night at Aerith's house - that's two nights. Avalanche spends the night in the Shinra jail - that's three nights. So, before they escape from Midgar, they've spent at least three days. Cloud and Aerith can also optionally spend another night in Wall Market, so that makes four days.

So I have to wonder how long their travels actually take - according to the script?

The three transparent guys are actually the same three men from the Beginner's Hall way back at the start in Sector 7. They ask Cloud the same questions as before, they say something along the lines of that they couldn't return to the planet without knowing Cloud's knowledge.

And great job Alan! This is how I have always figured the timeline of VII was, expanding a very long time especially on Disc 1 when they party is WALKING across the world.

Okay. I must have missed the explanation. Still, it's kinda odd.

So where were we? Oh yes. Day 35 and Dyne most definitely did NOT kill Barret.

So with Dyne gone Cloud is able to get into the Chocobo races and potentially win his way to freedom. Which he does.

Dio sends a note of apology and gives you a Buggy for your troubles. He also says that Sephiroth is heading towards Gongaga or whatever it's called.

You know, in hindsight, with the way everybody seemed to know about Dyne and how they all comment on how things will calm down now that he's gone, I can't help but think you guys were set up.

I'm not sure they ever thought you were really guilty. I think you may have just been tossed down there with the hope that maybe you WOULD kill him.

ANYWAY ... now you have a Buggy. I went and looked this up. Apparently SQUARE does give stats for it and it has a top speed of ALMOST 50 miles an hour. Top speed mind you, I'm sure that would imply ideal conditions and experienced drivers to keep it there. Your team on the other hand has never driven it before and is off roading it the whole time, so I doubt it'll get anywhere near top speed.

For calculation's sake, I'm going to just simplfy it and cut travel time in half.

I wonder who's driving it? At this point, the only ones we KNOW that can drive are Aeris and Cloud. It's worth noting that Aeris is the one who called and told Cloud that Dio had left it for them. hmmm...

You drive to Gongaga.

Arriving the two days later.

Day 37
The Turks have beat the team here! How did they know where you were going?
One of your teammates suggests a spy but Cloud says "I trust everyone."
Man, MAJOR CHANGE since day 1.

Exploring around a little bit, you find that the reactor here exploded 3 years ago.

You also find Scarlet and Tseng searching that reactor looking for HUGE materia so they can build a super weapon.

This is apparently also the home of some guy named Zack. He was a SOLDIER 1st class and Aeris's first love. He left town 10 years ago to join SOLDIER and wrote back home that he had a girlfriend 6 or 7 years ago.

Cloud apparently doesn't know him. :ermm:

The group rests for the night and continues on the next day.

Day 40
The Buggy breaks down outside a place called Cosmo Canyon. More on it later.

Tifa's bar has quite a few alrge signs on them.  The largest says TEXAS.  Maybe there's more cowgirl to her than we thought.  (None of the readable  signs say Seventh Heaven)

That is an interesting remark. Maybe 'Seventh Heaven' is known as the basement of Avalanche publically, and they're kind of "hiding" it so that the Shin-Ra wouldn't find them :ermm: If this makes sense.

I love this topic, Alan. Aside from the fact that I totally agree about FF7's timeline being wonky (they never go off schedule, they barely sleep, they travel inhumanly fast across continents, etc) it's a nice trip down memory lane.
