Okay I don't know if there is already a topic on this and if there is I apologize ahead of time.

Today. While wondering around one of the websites I usually visit. I stumbled across this.

My other pairing would have to be Cloud & Tifa, because Tifa is way hotter than Aeris.
(This is irrelevant please ignore :ermm: )
:lmao: no seriously ignore it :lmao:

No. I really wanted to talk about this *points below*

And Aeris and Zack are just way to cute together to even mess that up,
and I think their love was more tragic anyways.

Seriously does anyone else think so too?
For me Cloud and Aerith's love story was far more tragic then Aerith and Zacks.
I mean...Cloud saw Aerith die infront of his eyes. The words he said to her. Does that mean nothing? was that not tragic enough for this person?
Really what makes people think that Aerith and Zacks love story was more tragic? Was there really even a love story?

Sorry for a pointless thread but I just wanted to blow off some steam.

Zack and Aerith's "tragedy" can't even compare to Cloud and Aerith's. At least Aerith didn't have to see Zack die right before her eyes. And they only had this puppy love thing going on in the first place. Cloud and Aerith formed a special bond within the time of two weeks and Cloud held her in his arms as she took her last breath. He had to bury her, someone he promised he would protect. He felt like an utter failure not only to a friend but a dear loved one. His heart was so broken by her loss that he was driven into a state of depression for a good couple of months and was ready to die.

I don't see how Zack and Aerith puppy love could ever compare to Cloud and Aerith's spiritual bond. I don't see it at all.

Exactly Piano. That's what I'm saying. Makes me wonder if that person said that just to try and debunk Clerith :ermm:

@Alan. Agreed. :D

Zack and Aerith's situation wasn't really tagic as much as I see it as unfortunate. Their connection wasn't as obvious and involved as Cloud and Aerith's was. Aerith was not the only woman in Zack's mind and in all honesty, it appeared as if he saw her as a nice, cute girl whom he would've liked to gotten to know better and maybe go on a date or two with once he returned to Midgar. Aerith on the other hand felt a great deal more for Zack; I attribute that to her being young and impressionable. Zack was her first "love" if you could call him that, but I'm sure she was not Zack's first. I think most can agree that your first love really gets to you and you are quite hurt if it ever ends.

Cloud and Aerith on the other hand, their bond was...very unusual. They grew so close in a short amount of time. They formed a very tight friendship and as the story progresses, it's as if they lean on each other for support (Cloud more than Aerith, really, haha). Aerith, I'm sure, was surprised to be developing feelings for Cloud because of his resemblance to Zack in both appearance and mannerisms, but as we all know, in the end that didn't matter because she loved CLOUD. She acknowledged that he was different and it was HIM that she wanted, not the memory of her first boyfriend.

It's kind of amazing to see how very much Cloud grew to care about her in the time that they spent together. He was willing to risk everything to save her when she was taken away by the ShinRa and took his role as her bodyguard very seriously. He cared about what she thought, what she wanted, her dreams, her fears, everything. I don't believe he ever vested that amount of interest in what Tifa wanted, etc. I think that Cloud didn't realize why he felt such a strong attachment to Aerith until she died. He was so panic stricken when she left him in his dream and saw that Sephiroth was determined to stop her. And when she died in his arms, as it said in "Maiden", his heart broke. All at once he started realizing the things he loved about her and it sunk in that she was gone and there was nothing anyone could to to alleviate his pain.

I believe Aerith knew she would die if she left alone. But she did it anyway. She did it for her friends, her family, her planet but most importantly, she did it for Cloud. To knowingly give up her life to protect the person she loved the most is the ultimate sacrifice and I don't doubt that Aerith's own heart broke the night she left.

They wanted to be together. They just couldn't.

Come away, oh human child, to the waters and the wild.
You've all brought up a lot of the things I thought of when I read the question. So instead of repeating what's been said, I want to look at Aerith's attitude towards losing Zack, and Cloud's attitude towards losing Aerith.

Zerith:
After not hearing from Zack, Aerith decides to move on. For all she knows, he's still alive, but she would rather not wait around for him. She later says that though she did like him, it wasn't anything serious. Even moments after finding out about Zack's death, she goes back to playfully teasing Cloud. She is still able to laugh and smile and just live life. Her words and actions indicate that she's more than willing to leave Zack in the past.

Clerith:
Cloud continues to mull over her death, and even though he knows she's dead, he still wishes that he could be with her (Unlike Aerith, who didn't care enough to wait for someone she thought was still alive). He's even prefers merely thinking of her over spending time with actual living friends. His pain is so bad that he doesn't even care if he dies. His words and actions indicate that he can't get over the past.

Which one sounds more tragic? To me, it's the second choice.

To touch the light I see in your eyes...
IMO, the "tragedy" of Zerith was *nothing* in comparison to the tragedy of Clerith. Sure, Aerith was hurt when Zack disappeared and she never heard from him again. But she thought he'd taken up with some other girl, which makes it similar to what many of us go through when relationships end.

IMO, it's way more tragic to have the person you love killed right in front of you by your greatest enemy. I also think the tragedy was compounded when Cloud was unable to stop Sephiroth because he was under the mental control of Sephiroth. Sephy basically made Cloud helpless and powerless to do anything but watch as Sephiroth killed Aerith.

I also agree with Piano that Zack and Aerith's relationship was nothing more than "puppy love". As Difinity mentioned, Aerith wasn't the only girl on Zack's mind. IMO, Zack and Aerith never formed a bond as deep as the spiritual link between Cloud and Aerith.

A lot of you are just looking at Zerith from Aerith's POV. When you look at Zerith from only Aerith's pov, it's not too bad. But from Zack's... well I always feel pretty sad when I see his final memory in his last battle before he dies. It's of Aerith telling him he she wants to spend more time with him. He died trying to get to the girl he loved and trying to fulfill her wish

But as far as tragic goes, I think losing a loved one right before your eyes and holding their lifeless body while blaming yourself is more tragic.

I don't think one is really more tragic than the other in circumstance; in both cases a love is cut short by death. But in actual execution? I'd say Cloud/Aeris has more of an emotional impact for a few reasons. Aeris was looking to get over her past and was willing to fall in love again, Cloud was trying to make sense of his muddled mind, and I think they were both sort of looking to each other for answers. Not to mention just the sheer mindf!ck of Sephiroth having Cloud try to kills Aeris by his own hands not once, but twice. And then, of course, having to actually witness her death and be mocked about it.

Also, to be quite frank, Zack/Aeris suffered a lot because of the writing. It's really hard to have an emotional attachment to this ~tragic~ relationship when Aeris is barely in character.

I have to say that zack and aeriths story was sad but in no way can it compare to cloud and aeriths
If we look at it from zacks point of view I guess you can say it's a little different because zack was the one who died.
But if you looked at it zack wasn't so sad not being able to see aerith again(of course he was dying but really). If he said something like, "I wanted to see you so much aerith, sorry for not making it" something along those lines. That would have been really tragic. His last words compared to clouds were different. Of course the situation was a little different. But both knew they weren't gonna be able to see aerith again.

Also, zack didn't go visit aerith after his death. If I look at it like that I think that his love for aerith was not as strong as aerith and clouds. And the stronger the love/bond the more tragic the separation.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "of course he was dying" part... you mean he wasn't sad in that scene where he died?

I know that  .
I meant Zacks spirit.
I only say that because Elmyra's dead husband visited her.
So if Zack really really liked Aerith why didn't he ever visit her once.

Well Elmyra's husband TRIED to visit her. And I can't remember, did she know it was Elmyra's husband? She might have just sensed a spirit... and if that's true maybe Zack did try but she could only sense a spirit was close. I mean in the end of CC she senses something happened but we know she didn't sense specifically that Zack died because the U20 says she didn't know.

And we don't really know who can visit who and when and where and such. It's possible Zack couldn't do it at that time. I don't think it's ever completely clear what the circumstances are on that.

I think Aerith said it was Elmyra's husband. Though I'm not sure. Hum. I think Aerith said someone Elmyra loved. Let me go look for the quote. Or if anyone has it please share.

Ah. Yes true. Though I'm not so sure what or who she can sense and not sense.

"Someone dear to you has just died. His spirit was coming to see you, but he already returned to the planet."

SO maybe Zack tried to see her but then he returned to the planet?... I dunno. Again it's not really clear who can do these kinds of things. We know he can in ACC but I think they kinda had an excuse to do so there, I mean Sephiroth was going to destroy everything otherwise.

Besides it makes the story more real. I mean if everyone was running around with spirits all the time it'd really make death pointless in the game.
