I know this might seem a little silly to discuss, but I've been noticing debate on why Cloud decided to save Aerith after the sector plate fell. Some say it's because he felt guilty that he didn't leave when Elmyra asked him to. Some say he saved her because Aerith risked her life for Marlene. Others say Cloud soley saved her because she was an ancient and a part of the team. I, however, have a different opinion on the matter, but I want other opinions. So I was wondering why do you all think Cloud saved Aerith after she was kidnapped by Shinra? Any thoughts? |

Some kinda rabid...

Well, the more fangirl-ish side of me likes to think he did it cuz.. well, he was her "bodyguard" XD But logically, I think its cuz he felt kinda responsible, he was there when she got taken as I recall. As it goes on, I think he would've tried to rescue anyone, but I dont see why people should use this in the LT debate - I think if I were in Cloud's position and my friend had been kidnapped, I would go rescue them. If my "koibito" (/troll) had been kidnapped, I would go rescue them. The point is; Cloud went to rescue her, and I do find it very sweet but I think he would've rescued any member of the team regardless - but I dont think that means Aerith is a friend to Cloud, I think she still obviously means something different to him as is displayed in many other scenes that /are/ to do w/ the LT... But those are down to interpretation and we're back into the vicious cycle of LT doom  I'll stop rambling nao owo |

Come away, oh human child, to the waters and the wild.

Wow, it kind of sounds like they're trying to push Aeris out of even being "just a friend to Cloud." Their explanations for his behavior are starting to sound really clinical now. He was only trying to preserve the Ancient race? That sounds so silly. Saying that puts him on the same level as Hojo. Only interested in what benefits her Cetra powers could bring him rather than valuing her as a person. If we're going by that logic, then the only reason he saved Tifa from the Don must have been because he was trying to preserve the culture of pre-fire Nibelheim, and she was one of the only other people who remembered that culture. Seriously, in the heat of the moment, nobody even stops to think out rationales like that. It's not like you have a checklist that goes "Well, as long as I didn't disobey their mother, and as long as they didn't help someone else I know, and as long as they don't have powers that could be of use to me, I guess I don't have to save them." Plus, he clearly himself says that he did it because he wanted to protect her and fulfill his promise to her. "Hey, I'm your bodyguard, right?". |

I agree completely! It really does seem like some people try and make it as if Cloud never even considered Aerith a friend. Personally, I believe Cloud went to save her because she had been so kind to him and acted so selfless. I mean, just a few days before, Aerith not only offered to help him, but she let him stay in her house. Cloud had opened up to her, in someway or another, and she opened up to him. She spoke of her past and Cloud felt some kind of fondness towards her that he laughed with her, for the first time. And in my opinion, I believe Cloud was attracted to her at this time. It's clear she was at least a friend to him at this time, so I think he went and saved her not only because she was someone he was close to, not only because he was her bodyguard, but also because he had a growing attraction for her inside of him. Also, I heard Cloud did it because it was the kind thing to do, but, who Cloud was at the time, that's just not so. I mean, Cloud(before meeting Aerith) didn't give a hoot about anyone, he did things for money and couldn't care less about their missions, reasons, or their names. So, it's really not in Cloud's character at this time to just... save someone because it's the right thing to do. I mean, even Barret saw the change in Cloud's character, when they were heading up the stairs, Cloud says they can't make a commotion until after they save Aerith. Barret points out that even Cloud will fight for someone else; Cloud: "...because we don't want to start a commotion until we've saved Aerith..............I doubt that's possible though..." Barret:"...heh heh heh." Cloud:"Knock it off. You're giving me the creeps." Barret:"So even you will fight for someone else. I had you figured wrong I guess." Cloud: "Who cares what you figured!" Barret :"I'm just sayin' mebbe I was wrong..." It's clear Cloud changed when he met Aerith, and it's even more clear that Cloud was saving Aerith because he wanted to make sure she was okay. In Dismantled, he says "I have to rescue her by all means!" after he realizes no one can guarentee her safety. So, Cloud gallently headed into the Shinra HQ for Aerith because he wanted to save her from danger. Not because it was the right thing to do, or because he owed her that much, but because he wanted to rescue her by all means. He didn't have to do anything, just like he told Barret and Tifa back at Seventh Heaven, he didn't care about any of them or their missions or why they were doing what they were doing. In yet, Cloud, the same man that took money from a child's school fund, decided to go and rescue a woman he just met. In my opinion, Cloud went to rescue her because he wanted to. I jus' happen to believe what made him so deadset on saving her was because he was falling for. |

I think this little conversation may hold the answer. Aerith "Cloud, are you there?" Cloud "Aerith!? You safe?" Aerith "Yeah, I'm all right." Aerith "I knew that Cloud would come for me." Cloud "Hey, I'm your bodyguard, right?" |
