Cloud tends to be depressive, that's true. But it can't be said that depression itself is a part of anyone's personality. Cloud at the end of the original game is not depressed. Cloud in DoC is not depressed etc. and I see that as who his happier self is. Also, I was referring to when his true self is restored and him not being depressed as two separate things.... And I see I was using the wrong word. I agree with what you say at the bottom. |

I don't think Cloud tends to be depressed. I was just saying that was the real him who got depressed. He didn't take on anyone else's personality. His personality reacted to something with depression. That depression was really part of him. As for whether or not Cloud was depressed at the end of FFVII, we don't know for sure whether or not he was because I don't think we saw enough of him in order to judge. If he was feeling depressed, I would fully expect Cloud to try and hide it at first, since he doesn't communicate his feelings well and tends to keep his feelings to himself. He'd most likely figure it was nobody's business and try to work it out for himself. Instead of sharing his feelings, he started visiting the Church. CoT left it undetermined when he started going there. |

My take on Cloud's depression is that I would expect him to behave again like how he did in AC/ACC if anything horrible were to happen in the future...which is why I believe Cloud and Tifa's relationship will always be rocky. I don't mean either that Cloud tends to be depressed, just that the way he handles and reacts to bad events/situations isn't going to change. That's just who Cloud is. Overcoming his depression didn't turn him into a different person with a new set of personality or anything like that. Anastar:
Exactly. Cloud's not the type to open up easily to people and I don't think that will ever change. |

My views on who Cloud is, and how he acts is exactly how SE and Nomura has portrayed him as. Cloud is just one of those characters you can't put into words. Cloud is cocky at times, but not cocky in the way where it's him saying things like; "I'm the best!" Cloud's actually very modest and has a tendency to down himself/not believe in himself. About Cloud's depression, I don't think he'd go through a depression as deep as that again. |

Just a Nobody

I think with how Cloud was in AC was just that he was finally allowed time to grieve and actually feel. With everything that had happened: the Nibelheim diaster, being imprisoned for years, Zack's death, his alternate persona, Aerith's death and finally realise who he exactly was all finally started to take their toll. Cloud didn't have time to think and actually feel about everything that happened in VII because he was constantly in battle and when you are engaged at all times you can't let your mind wander. After the end of VII, Sephiroth was killed and Meteor destroyed so everything was at "peace" and Cloud was able to stand still for the first time in years. I think it all came crumbling down on him. I'm not saying Cloud is weak but its like this for anyone when you put your mind of things for so long and you keep yourself busy and then comes the one moment when you can sit down all of your feelings can come crashing down. Cloud's a human after all just like everyone else. Like what Aly said I don't think Cloud has a tendancy to be depressed, during the two year break between VII and AC he was able to actually process and properly feel everything that had happened. |

Good point, Kuki Prower. He hadn't had time to deal with all that had happened before and during VII, including the Nibelheim incident, the death of his mother, Zack's death, being experimented on by Hojo, and everything else in addition to Aerith's death. Plus, his initial reaction at the end of VII would be part joy at saving the world and defeating Sephiroth, and part grief at the death of Aerith along with the other negative things listed above. On top of that, he had to figure out what to do with his life now. He was bound to have mixed feelings - there was a lot of different things on his mind. As I said before, too, Cloud isn't one to express his feelings easily. He tends to keep things to himself, so he wouldn't necessarily show his depression outwardly to others. He'd try to solve it on his own. Again, we have no idea when he started going to the Church, either. He may have gone there for the first time on his first day back or a few weeks later or a few months later. It was never stated. IMO, though, going to the Church was the way he tried to deal with his depression since he most likely felt closer to Aerith there. |

I can't imagine how horrible it must've been having all that on his shoulders. Considering he didn't have time to handle it right when it happened, it was all built up. That's enough to make anyone horribly depressed. A lot of people would struggle immensely with it. A lot of people wouldn't be able to handle it. |

Depression is part of his true personality. You make it sound like he had a psychotic break or something. He got over his depression, yes - but I wouldn't say that his depression wasn't part of the "real him".
