Very honestly, I've always seen that card as symbolizing Cloud's rivalry with Shinra, too. But why would SE depict Cloud's rivalry against Shinra rather than his rivalry against Sephiroth? I mean, the main thing that Cloud does against Shinra during the game is rescue Aerith. Yes, he helped bomb two of their reactors, fights Rufus, and deceives Shinra in Junon, but largely his "battle" with Shinra during the game is background. Cloud even gets along with the Turks in Wutai, and he helps stop Diamond Weapon when it attacks Midgar. And let's not forget his cooperation with the Turks in AC/ACC.  So who is *really* Cloud's main rival?

So I *do* think Vanelo brings up a very interesting point - that the only time you see Cloud strike that pose at the Shinra building is when he's ready to go in and rescue Aerith. I also think Vanelo's point about Cloud not being shown in front of the Seventh Heaven or anything to do with Tifa is interesting, too.

The picture is most likely linked to the moment before saving Aeris. But what I mean is, that altough the picture is linked to Aeris, I don't think it's all about "ZOMG! Cloud's undying love for Aeris!!" but more about symbolising the whole beginning of the game, where Shinra was still the main enemy back then. It's not about underlining Cloud's main enemy, we all know who that is. Besides, I think Cloud's picture was also made for promotion.(The others were too, but his even more) Just like Midgar is used for promotion, altough the majority of the story happens elsewhere. So I think Cloud's picture is also promoting the game, telling us how one of the themes is fighting against Shinra. That may change later in the story, but that's how it is in the beginning of the game. Cloud's also holding his sword like that in other pictures too, so why wouldn't he in this one?

Let's turn the chessboard over; if the picture is supposed to symbolise Cloud's feelings for Aeris, then why isn't he shown to be in the church? In the place where he and Aeris met, and which holds an important meaning to him? Instead we see Barret and Marlene, while it would maybe make more sense for them being in Corel. (And yes, I do understand why they're in the church)

*Laughs* I do not intend to argue, just to make this theory more solid. If we went to CloTis saying "This picture is just like before Cloud went to save Aeris, so it's symbolising Cloud's love for her!!" they'd laugh their heads off :D Juts like we've been laughing at them.

In the end, I just want to think Cloud's picture as a symbol of the beginning of the game, instead of turning everything into Cleris or CloTi when the game is about so much more~

I'm not saying it is intended to pander to Cleriths or Clotis any more than Tifa's picture is (and you could make an argument for that picture too), because this was made back before there were fandoms to pander to. But neither am I agreeing that it has nothing to do with Aeris either. I'm saying it depicts a very important moment for Cloud that captures his desire to save her, and it happens to be very in-line with Clerith interpretations of the story.

And the link between them in their pictures should not be underestimated... the other pictures are clearly understood to be important their respective characters, so why show Cloud and Aeris in such random places?

You're forgetting one thing... there may be a lot of pictures depicting that specific pose, but there is only one moment in the entire actual game itself that he uses it. Yes it happens to be good for marketing, so what? Doesn't change its importance.

Part of the importance of Barret's picture though, is also to show how important Marlene is to him, not just Aeris. They're there together giving their respects to Aeris.

You have to remember, Cloud didn't care about Shinra even when they WERE the primary threat at the beginning. His goal was never to bring down the company, exact revenge, or end the war between Shinra and Avalanche. It was simply to rescue Aeris.

And likewise, the chessboard can be turned both ways. If the picture IS supposed to depict a Cloud vs. Shinra rivalry... why? Every OTHER picture is personal and introspective for the specific character depicted, and isn't intended to show the plot at large. Showing a picture of Cloud in front of Shinra HQ doesn't do that unless some other aspect of his personal character is involved. If it is trying to depict Cloud's enemy or his rivalry with anyone, a setting linked to Sephiroth (without giving anything away though obviously) instead of the Shinra would've been more appropriate and possibly easier to do.

Bear in mind also, Aeris is the one who changes Cloud and causes him to grow as a character. At the beginning of the game, he's a cold, cynical individual who only does things for money. Aeris gets him out of his shell, to the point that he's willing to risk his very life for no money at all to scale a 70 story building and fight an entire army of armed guards, robots, monsters and even Shinra's president Rufus just to save her, when earlier he barely cared enough to put his life on the line for actual money in far less risky missions. THAT is what the picture represents, because that is what is relevant to his character.

And as I stated earlier, I'm not saying it was their intent to flaunt Cloud and Aeris' love with this picture. But it happens to be very in-line with Clerith interpretations of the story... and also happens to look very good for marketing purposes

So what? Most Clotis will either laugh or scold you for so much as DARING to even think about suggesting that Cloud had a love interest who isn't Tifa. I seriously have had nasty remarks made at me just for jokingly mentioning... not even Aeris... but the Cloud x Yuffie Gold Saucer date in a Cloti dominant environment. That's right, not Aeris, but YUFFIE, whom no one takes seriously as a potential lover for Cloud.

Clotis can be absolute mindless idiots, so really, who cares what they think? :P

Yeah sorry I could have made that a little more clear XD

Tifa keeps her mouth shut tight. As a member of AVALANCHE she was reunited with Cloud. She holds doubts about his transformation after the Nibelhiem incident 5 years ago. Her complicated feelings for Cloud that exceeded childhood friendship continue to unravel the internal trauma Cloud possesses. That was also a journey into her own past...

"You really, really are..... you... right?"
(She asks Cloud when surrounded by Cosmo Candle.)

"Cloud... Words aren't the only thing that tell people what you're thinking..."
(Said to Cloud, when the two are left alone the night before the final battle)

buuuuump.

Quex, what cards do you have? I tried going through the whole thread, scanning/reading for context but there's so much sometimes. >_< How many/which ones do you have? Do you have this same set that was already posted in the thread? Art Collection?

I've got the Bandai Cardass cards, full set with the binder. Comes with 3 or 4 different character cards, stats, weapons, limits, history, 3/4 different artworks... Materia/Summon monsters, Amano cards, Memorable Scenes (Highwind, and Date both used) cards... if you guys already have these, then ignore this. If not, I'd be happy to take pics and let somebody translate?

I'm very interested in those cards with the date and Highwind scene. I bet those are the ones in this video Anastar showed me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Uu7plyHOPQ

I contacted the uploader, hoping to get scans of those two and the "Sanctuary of Amusement" card from the Art Museum collection, but if you can field some of them, that would be super helpful.

Here's 4 cards, the two you asked for, and Aerith's death and bumping into Cloud (just cause I'd like to know what they say :3)

Awesome, thank you for the scans. =)

Had a little trouble with the kanji on the "Meeting with Aerith" card because of the glare that's on that card, but I think I deciphered it in the end. Here's what I made of the four cards:

決戦
シスターレイによりついに砕かれた大空洞のバリア。クラウドたちは、各々の想いを胸に秘め、飛空艇で大空洞に乗り込んだ。今、セフィロスとの最後の戦いが始まる……。
"Decisive Battle
The Northern Crater's barrier was at last broken by the Sister Ray. Each holding their feelings in mind, Cloud and co. descend into the Northern Crater with the airship. Now, the final battle with Sephiroth begins ..."

初デート
ゴールドソーサーを訪れた夜、エアリスにデートに誘われたクラウド。観覧車の中、クラウドは、自分がエアリスの昔の恋人に似ていると告白されるのだった。
"First Date
Cloud is invited on a date by Aerith the night they visit the Gold Saucer. On the gondola, Aerith confesses that Cloud is similar to her old koibito."

エアリスとの出会い
反神羅組織「アバランチ」と共に壱番魔光炉の破壊に参加したクラウド。作戦を終了後、彼は八番街でひとりの少女に出会う。彼女の名はエアリス。それは運命の出会いであった。
"Meeting With Aerith
Cloud participated in the destruction of the no. 1 mako reactor with the anti-Shin-Ra organization 'AVALANCHE.' Following the operation, he meets a young woman in Sector 8. Her name is Aerith. It was a fated meeting."

エアリスの厄機
セフィロスがメテオを発動させるのを防ごうと、古代種の都を訪れたエアリス。しかし、祈りを捧げる彼女の前に、セフィロスの魔の手が迫った。そして、次の瞬間……。
"Aerith's Misfortune
In order to prevent Sephiroth casting Meteor, Aerith goes to the City of the Ancients. However, before she can offer up her prayer, Sephiroth plays his malevolent hand. And the next moment ..."

Nothing too special on any of them. Just a very brief summary of things we already know.

Thanks again for the scans. At least we could satisfy our curiosities.
