How Manly Was Cloud?

I think the answer to that depends on what you define as "manly". Literally, it's having or denoting those good qualities traditionally associated with men, such as courage and strength. If I were to answer that directly with this definition, I'd say Cloud is very manly. In the end, anyway. That's where progress gets you.

You can also break that down into appearance and mannerisms, which is when you're getting into extremely subjective territory. How many fans view Cloud is NOTHING like how he seems to me. I greatly dislike how people make him out to be this lost little boy who needs a woman (or man) to suit their own fantasies. Or even a giant ball of "emo". Cloud has problems. He reacts to them, then solves them like any standard character would when they have to get over their own. There are too many facets of Cloud to reduce him to one single adjective accurately. I'm not even going into fans who just find him to be a sexy piece of pixel meat.

Anyway, I dislike the term "manly" because it loosely implies that such qualities of men cannot be applied to strong, courageous women. Also, since when is the most general use of "manly" ever accurately applied in the FF main character universe?

Keeper of the Intimacy of Aerith's soul living in Cloud
Cloud had so little manliness Aerith had to run off with me.

Ahem.

Seriously, though, Cloud's not lacking in manliness at any point. He is, however, grieving for an unusually long period of time (for 'just a friend') or a reasonable length of time (for a wife... )

Grief makes some odd things happen, chemically and otherwise.

I don't see Cloud as being manly, but not girly either, he's more of a boy than a man. He's very dependent on others and shy and somewhat withdrawn. I see Barret and Cid as manly.

Hey, I sometimes believe that Aerith is the 'man' in their relationship :lmao:

Well obviously this is one of those things that is in the eye of the beholder. For instance in this society a lot of people would consider Cloud to be a wimp. But in Japanese society Cloud would be considered more manly because he has some samurai-like qualites.

However if were determining his manliness in terms of maturity I'd say he's pretty manly for the most part.

I think Cloud was pretty Manly, I mean he told a pretty nice dude to "Blow off", but then again I think "rude" and "manly" should be synonyms for each other :lmao:

Wait...how is he not manly?
