Ok, I know we sometimes look at Japanese symbolism and think of it as a plus. Like, ribbons, colors, names, etc. I also know how Clotis tend to say that SE wouldn't include Japanese Symbolism in their games. But I found actual Japanese symbolism in the game. And it's Tifa that does it. In the beginning of the game (after the first reactor is destroyed) Barret and Cloud go to Seventh Heaven, Barret's harming people or something, and Tifa comes out and bows to the people. Go to 00:55 Umm, isn't bowing to people Japanese symbolism? I know that it's one of the first things you learn in a Japanese class if you travel to Japan. Another thing is Wutai. Yuffie's hometown is full of everyday Japanese symbolism. So where and how can people say that there's not any Japanese symbolism in a Japanese game? What do you all think, does FFVII have Japanese symbolism in it..or not? Before anyone says anything, yes, I know it probably doesn't matter.

Cloti's hate this argument. But yes, I think the game was influenced by Japanese culture. In fact, I wrote a whole website about it: Japanese Culture and the Love Triangle of FFVII. I've had several Japanese people read it and say that it explains the cultural aspects of FFVII very well. One even asked me if I'd spent time in Japan. Nomura also basically said that the game was influenced by Japanese culture when he said this: Nomura : "AC is piece of work made by Japanese people. In Hollywood movies, I think there is a tendency where the meaning of all the scenes have to be expressed clearly but, this isn't something like that. With our work, the viewer is free to decide how they interpret or enjoy it. The staff has their own answers to all the scenes in the movie such as the angel statue that makes an appearance many times. But, even if someone who have watched it interprets it differently then that is just another answer. I guess "comparing answers" with friends is one of the ways you can enjoy the movie. I think AC is a movie that makes those who have watched it, want to talk about it with others." From: Interview in AC Prologue Book When Nomura says that AC is a work made by Japanese people and that it's different from something Hollywood would make, he's basically saying that the creation of it was affected by their culture. If that's true for AC, I'd think it'd be true for FFVII as well. |

CloTis are idiots for thinking there's no Japanese culture in a Japanese game made in 1997. Seriously. The game is made up of Japanese culture. A few examples... Aerith's ribbon Aerith's colors Tifa's colors Tifa's and Elmyra's bowing Cloud's hair The fish in the stairway to the altar where Aerith's praying These are but a few examples. |

japanese symbolism in a japanese game? O.o That's crazy I tell ya! /sarcasm They're just jealous coz all the symbolism points to I'm a westerner and I saw the symbolism plain as day. You can't ignore something that obvious. Your website rocks Anastar. |
