People can assume relationships, but it really isn't proof of anything when they're used in advertising. They will usually use the characters that people love most/are more recognizable/inspire emotions/make you want to buy the product. Advertising cannot be used as proof of any relationship between two people unless the two people are used in such a way. If it's just two character sketches put together that have nothing to do with each other, it is proof of nothing. If it's them actually acknowledging each other in a romantic sense, you can make that assumption then. |

Oh, yea. I wouldn't actually use it as proof. But they sold us Cloud/Aerith. And after seeing the same thing happen with SquallxRinoa, ZidanexGarnet, and TidusxYuna I just get the feeling that SQ-EN is/was implying Cloud and Aerith as lovers or as the intended couple of the game. |

Besides couples are a good marketing strategy. It's more than two popular characters together, it's their story we're buying. But I don't think it's a rational proof either among novellas, movies, cameos and games...(god what an industry). |

Putting a couple together for the purpose of showing off that they're a couple involves them acknowledging each other in some way at the very least. Putting two neutral images of a man and a woman on the cover of something does not make the consumer automatically think they are in a relationship. Only those with an existing bias in their mind would come to that conclusion immediately. Putting two recognizable and loved characters (to the target audience) regardless of personal affiliation on a product is another strategy completely. Both strategies can be just as effective to whom the company is trying to speak to, but only if they are used correctly. Ads have three seconds at best to catch attention of the consumer. It's nearly impossible to sell a love story using two neutral sketches of two people in that amount of time with absolutely no reference to the story itself, whether it's in text or otherwise.
And that's the point I try to make.

You're absolutely right. Plus video games's audience is a very special target. They usually know the game and its characters before looking for goodies. But still I'm wondering. When you see a tv magazine cover or a movie poster with two actors (man and woman) you don't know yet for example. "Are they together?" is usually the first thing spreading from our heads (time for synapses to come in our brain and then go lol). There's no need to know the story behind... Then rationality or bias come and it's up to us to decide. Hopefully lol. But we're off topic maybe? Anyway, thanks to you and AerithGainsborough for your answers! And sorry for sp
