Here's a character who's author has admitted that he based her design on Aerith! :D

Mutsumi from Love Hina.

Ken Akamatsu (mangaka of Love Hina, Negima) said that Aerith is his favourite character in FF7 -- way to go!

Come away, oh human child, to the waters and the wild.
She's not anime, but I think Helena from Dead or Alive looks like her. She has a similar hairstyle, and usually wears a bow in her hair like Aerith, too.

Mimi Tachikawa, from Digimon Adventure/Season 1.

There's also that Sarah girl from an old Sonic movie...hm...

Agreed about Mimi. The first time I saw Aerith I thought she looked like Mimi, and then Cloud looks like Yamato.

I know she's not anime, but Belle from Beauty and the Beast always reminded me of Aerith, too.

Lily from Fatal Fury is another one. In addition to looking like Aerith she also has a similar storyline and relationship to the main guy.

Eponine from Les Miserables: Shojo Cosette greatly resembles her.

An interesting piece of trivia. In the Japanese stage production of Les Miserables Maaya Sakamoto played Eponine.

I donīt know where to post this, I hope this is the right section... but there is one (unofficial) pairing that really reminds me of Cloud and Aerith.

...Itīs Touko and N xD
Touko is the female protagonist from PM Black/White and an open, optimistic and hot-tempered girl, while N is a calm, shy and secluded person who acts as the antagonist in the game until realizing that he was just used and being replaced by his father.
Touko has long dark brown and curly hair she always wears in a ponytail. N has kind of spiky and curly hair he wears in a ponytail, too.
There isnīt much known about Toukos past, but Ns is tragic and sad for two: he was secluded from humans and grew up with PMs filled with hatred and pain caused by humans; and as the deeply empathic and sensitive boy he is, he soon adopts these feelings from them and wants to separate trainers from their PM so they could live in peace without being threatened by humans. When he meets Touko, he is surprised that her partner PM likes her, and this fascinates him that much that he feels soon attracted to Touko - itīs unknown if those feelings are romantic or not, since one can play as a male, too.
Eventually, he asks Touko when she searches for Team Plasma to take a ride on the ferris wheel with him. There, he tells her his deepest secret - that he is the king of Team Plasma - and that he wanted her to know that. While the story proceeds, he tells her more and more of his innermost feelings and even his own subordinates make comments how much N holds dear the player. He even gives the player some kind of bodyguards known as the "Finstrio" or "Shadow Triad".
When the player explores Ns Castle, he meets two muses (in the Japanese version, they are goddesses) - Anthea, the muse/goddess of love, and Concordia, the muse/goddess of peace. In the Japanese version, Concordia says that the player provides N peace and that nothing is as terrifying and beautiful as an innocent heart. In the Japanese version, Anthea heals the players PMs and says that the player is deeply connected with N, as well as that N has endured too much of bad memories in this castle so the player has to persuade him. After the player fought against N, it is revealed that N never was the antagonist and was just used by his father. After fighting his father G-Cis, the player talks again with N and they have a deep conversation. Then N says farewell to the player (with a heartbreaking piece of music in the background called "Nīs Farewell") and then goes away.
Well, I know that this pairing isnīt official, even if it has a great fanclub around the world called the "Ferriswheel-Shippers", but most players seem to think that Ns really in love with the female protagonist; this is denied because one can play as a male, too.
Still, there are similarities - their personalities, their appearance, Ns tragic past, and the ferris wheel date where he talks to Touko about his likings and his innermost feelings. Does anybody know this pairing, too, or am I alone with that? ^^
