Guardian Angel; A subtle reference?

Hey, I'm not sure if this has been pointed out before and if it has, feel free to delete/close this topic. I'd just thought I'd mention it incase it hasn't been. ^^

During my first playthrough of FFVII, I made it to disc 2 and had gotten to the part where Cloud becomes a vegetable. Now, when you're playing as Cid, talk to one of the guys standing outside of the clinic before you leave. He'll mention how it's a miracle Cloud survived and that "he must have some guardian angel watching over him".

I know, this could just be a coincidence but I couldn't help but immediately think of Aerith being that "guardian angel" watching over him. She is like that in AC after all, no? :aeris:

Interesting observation, RogueKyne. ^_^ Yes, I remember that quote about a "guardian angel" watching over Cloud.

We know that Aerith was acting like a "guardian angel" when Cloud fell into the Lifestream at Mideel, and that it was Aerith who guided Tifa to help Cloud. That was stated in Maiden of the Planet:

Under pressure with the Meteor drawing near, the Planet released its massive biological destructive Weapons and the flow of the Lifestream was disrupted by their activities. The amount of energy that surged up onto the surface was never seen before. Gushing out into Mideel, Cloud who was peacefully resting there with Tifa nursing him by his side, both of them get swallowed up into the Lifestream.

Both of them were engulfed by Mako as they fell into the Planet. For Cloud, it was the second time but for Tifa, it was her first experience.

Aerith risked everything she had in this golden opportunity.

She desperately talked to Tifa who was about to get intoxicated by the highly concentrated Mako. Guiding her conscious, Tifa took her into Cloud's closed heart.

In truth, Aerith really wanted to do it herself. But she couldn't carry out the task. That's why she entrusted Tifa with it. She entrusted Tifa with all the feelings she had for Cloud in her heart. She entrusted them to the one that was going to "live" together with Cloud...

And so, Tifa accomplished the task. Collating her own memories with that of Cloud's, she looked for the things that only the real Cloud could know. Proofing it all, the closed door was opened.

When he fell into the Lifestream at the Northern Crater, Maiden tells us that Aerith tried talking to Cloud within the Lifestream but his mind was too shattered for her voice to reach him. However, she is indeed "watching over him":

[Cloud] was equal to a dried up sponge soaking up a liquid. His blank conscious and vast nonsensical memories were all going to be buried away. This state in which someone was expected to be extremely intoxicated was commonly referred to as "Mako poisoning."

With his mind being infringed beyond the point of recovery, Cloud floated within the Lifestream. Before long, his living body that shouldn't be in the Lifestream, was ejected through one of the natural Mako energy geysers into the nearby coasts of Mideel. With his character lost, he was now a crippled person in confusion.

.....

Aerith was eager to talk to Cloud as his living body flowed out of the swirl. She had been trying to while his body was being carried to Mideel. But with his mind shattered and filled with despair, Cloud couldn't hear Aerith's voice. No matter how much she cried out, her voice wouldn't reach Cloud just like the time when they were separated in the Forgotten City.

Helplessly watching Cloud's body return to the surface, Aerith stood in the sea of Mako in dismay.

So we do know that Aerith was watching over Cloud when he fell into the Lifestream at the Northern Crater, as the game quote stated. ^_^

So we know that she tried to reach him. It wasn't stated that she helped guide him to the surface - however, if she was able to do so during the Lifestream Event, I don't see why she couldn't when he fell into the Lifestream at the Northern Crater.

I remember that "guardian angel" line. My initial reaction was that is was Aerith who was his "guardian angel." After reading the first post here, I was wondering if it could be true since I couldn't remember if MOtP had said anything about her watching over him after he had fallen into the Lifestream at the Northern Crater. I'm glad that passage proved it true. :) She must've indeed been the "guardian angel" spoken about.

Good detailed response, Anastar! Yes, this does certainly back up the game's quote that she is this spoken about "Guardian Angel."

Ah, Maiden. That was quite a lovely short-story to read. It was interesting in the ways that Aerith interacted with other characters she didn't get to meet and how she handled her feelings for Cloud, displaying them in ways even beyond the grave.

And it certainly didn't depress me like "Case of Tifa" did. (Of course, that was an interesting story, too. "Case of Denzel" was not very interesting, and "Case of Barret" was alright, but "meh" in a way, too. Oh well, I did at least like Cid and Barret's conversations.)

I figured easily that the 'guardian angel' must've refer to Aerith, since it would make a heck lot of sense. After all, who else would've watch over him?

Ah, MOTP, need to reread it one of these days.
