I stumbled across this scene earlier today, it's not the most groundbreaking scene in the world, but I haven't seen it mentioned before and I thought i'd share it and see what people's thoughts are on it. I apologise if this is common knowledge, I just haven't seen it mentioned anywhere before ![]() This happens just before your party goes to Cosmo Canyon to speak with Bugenhagen and take him to The Forgotten City. I thought that Bugenhagen was already in my party, and so ventured to The Forgotten City and approached the central pillar with the glowing stone on it, the one where you discover what Aerith was praying for and the stone shows her death again. (Cloud and your party approach the central pillar/altar. The noise of the planet crying starts.) Cloud: ...It's similar. This place...is similar to the inside of the lifestream. (Looks down) All the different noise. (Shakes head) ...The noise doesn't go through your ears, but directly into your head. (Looks up) It seems to mean something...but I can't quite get it. I hate not knowing what it is. (Turns to party) That's what this is similar to. Tifa: Now that you mention it... Cait Sith: My head, it's about to be crushed. (Cloud turns back to the central glowing stone ) Cloud: So Aerith came here too... She stood in this exact spot... (Slowly lowers shoulders and look down sadly) Hmm... Aerith didn't have to come here. She was able to find out all the information here. What Aerith needed was that altar and only that. (Looks up and turns back to party) Cloud: Aerith....Aerith... What were you planning to do? (Does his signature "shake head and shrug shoulders" move) What...are we supposed to do? |

This passage is very reminiscent to the part where Cloud spoke to Aerith when she was dead. He gently bowed his head on her body as he said "What about us? What are we supposed to do?" just before gently setting her down and finishing "What about MY pain?" So Cloud never meant by "us" as in AVALANCHE. He meant that as a personal talk between him and her. And when he says that again, I think he's talking to Aerith again as if she was listening to him. I dunno if Aerith's consciousness was inside Cloud's at that time, though, because it wasn't confirmed until AC. BTW. nice find, Raven! :) |

Maybe not when Aerith died... but this time, "us" means Avalanche IMO. Avalanche doesn't know what Aerith was trying to to and there, they all need to know if they want to save the planet. I'm not saying that Cloud doesn't get sad when he's back to the forgotten city, just that finding what Aerith wanted to accomplish can be their only chance for surviving and they're all concerned about that. |

Interesting find, Raven! I don't think I've seen that one before.
So you went to the Forgotten City before going to get Bugenhagen at Cosmo Canyon? Interesting. I never thought to go there before getting Bugenhagen! By any chance, did you go near the lake where Aerith was buried? OOC, I'm wondering whether anything was said there. I have to agree with Beatrix that it sounds more like he's referring to Avalanche by "us" in this particular passage. In Aerith's death scene, he'd been speaking about his own pain and so forth right before asking, "what are we supposed to do?". Here, he's wondering what Aerith was trying to accomplish when she came to the Forgotten City on her own, and whether Avalanche can do anything to help carry out her plan. |

Okay, if Cloud meant "we" as in AVALANCHE that time around, what did he mean when he said it directly to Aerith? Those words were a bit difficult to understand, even though it's clear it was a personal talk between him and her. What about us? What are we supposed to do? He said those words as he bowed his head on Aerith's lifeless body, so he didn't mean AVALANCHE there. But what did his words mean? Did he mean that he thought he would have a (promised) future with Aerith? Cait Sith predicted that after predicting Cloud would lose her. So was he asking how would he complete his future without Aerith? What about MY pain? Yeah, MY was capitalized when he said it. He said the same thing when his hometown, Nibelheim, got burned down by Sephiroth (although I'm not sure if "MY" was capitalized though). And he said that as he dropped Aerith gently on the ground before starting to cry. So is this pain different from the pain he felt when he lost his friends and family in Nibelheilm? Is this pain about losing Aerith? Sorry if it's common knowledge already, but just making sure here. I'm not used to hearing Cloud speaking emotionally, as it is a huge contrast to his usual rough-manner talks. |

We've discussed this in another thread, but I wasn't able to find it. ![]() At any rate, we agree with you that he was talking about he and Aerith in the death scene. Beatrix and I both said that. It's quite apparant that Cloud's speaking about he and Aerith in the death scene. From what I've heard, the Japanese version makes that quite apparant, since the language is *very* personal when he says that. |

But do you think Cloud was talking about how he was going to complete his future without her (as I said on my previous post) as he said those words? As I watched that specific scene in AC's Reminisce, it was almost a direct translation. So what do you make of it all? |

Yes, I think Cloud was talking about the impact of her loss on his life. Yet, at that point, I doubt that Cloud knew whether he'd ever see her again, since he knew little about the Cetra or the Lifestream at that time. I know I was the same way - at that point in the game, I felt for sure it wasn't the last we'd seen of Aerith. Yet, I had no idea where or how we'd see her. Cloud prolly felt the same way. I doubt that Cloud fully realized the possibilities until he saw her spirit take form during the hand reach scene. In fact, that's what I think he was talking about when he said, "I think I understand. The Promised Land. I think I can meet her... there." He finally understood that some day, he'd be with her again. |
