This is a *long* post, so settle in for some heavy reading! I adapted VII as much as I could, and yeah some stuff got left out, but cut me some slack here. Enjoy! --------------- The story begins with three uniformed SOLDIERS looking over a village from a mountaintop. They're all wearing their helmets, and one has a braid of brown hair emerging from under her helmet. She remains silent as the two SOLDIERS start talking about their orders; Nibelheim's Mako Reactor is faulty, and they've been ordered to investigate. One of the SOLDIERS asks if Nibelheim truly has declared their independence from Shin-Ra, but the other laughs and says that as long as the world needs Mako, no one is independent of Shin-Ra. Entering the village, the SOLDIERS cut down a few of the guards and make their way to the mountain behind the village, climbing to a large Mako Reactor. Inside, the guards approach a large iron door, and open it. "The hell is that?" one mutters. The camera shows a brief glimpse of something blue and purple in a tank, before one of the SOLDIERS cries out and falls back down the stairs. His buddy goes to help while the brunette woman approaches the tank. There's another flash, and the woman gasps, falling to her knees. Suddenly, the helmet over her head sparks and explodes as the two SOLDIERS behind her scream. The woman regains consciousness in a bed, and looks around to see a burnt and stained Shin-Ra uniform hanging from the wall. Looking down at her clothing now, a pink dress, she slowly sits up. A woman calls to her, and the brunette turns to see the woman enter the room. The woman introduces herself as Elmyra, and says that she found her unconscious outside her home. The brunette stands up, stumbling slightly, and claims she can't remember anything. Elmyra coaxes her, and the woman remembers her name: Aeris. Suddenly, the door to the house thuds, and two Nibelheim guards demand the SOLDIER be handed over to them. Elmyra tells Aeris to flee to Mt. Nibel out the back door while she distracts the guards. Aeris nods and flees into the mountains. Partway up, the Nibelheim guards find her, and Aeris tries to flee over a bridge, only for it to collapse. Aeris lands, alive but hurt, and gasps as a memory returns to her. A man in a black cloak walks about a balcony before her, looking over a sprawling technological city. "We are kindred spirits, you and I. Brother and sister, cut from the same cloth,", the man says, turning to look at her with glowing green eyes. "The only difference between us is the tool that was used to cut us out". The man slowly walks to her and puts a gloved hand on her chin to tilt her head up. "That fool Shinra just sees you as some meal ticket, something to make money off of. But I see you as the future of this planet. Tell me what you know, and we shall rule over those idiots as gods. The only other alternative is SOLDIER, and you know what happens to them. Well?" The memory fades, and Aeris slowly slumps to the ground. Back with Elmyra, she looks up as a blonde man with blue eyes enters her home. "You sent for me," the man says silently, looking at her. Elmyra nods and greets the man as "Cloud". Elmyra explains the situation with Aeris to Cloud, and says she feels that Aeris is not your normal SOLDIER. She can relate to Cloud on that. Cloud nods absentmindedly, and asks what Elmyra wants him to do. Elmyra says that Aeris may be useful to them, she doesn't have her memories and if they can convince another SOLDIER to rebel against Shin-Ra, AVALANCHE may have a chance at overthrowing them. Cloud nods and agrees to help her. Entering the mountain, Cloud finds Aeris, and takes her to safety outside the village. Unfortunately, Nibelheim is under lockdown after the attack, so Cloud can't get back in to speak to Elmyra. Aeris wakes up, and Cloud and she introduces themselves. Cloud and Aeris travel to the south, where a giant amusement park called Gold Saucer has been built over the desert. Ascending to the park, Cloud rendevous with a mechical robot called Cait Sith. Although Aeris is confused, Cait Sith explains that its controller is one of the Shin-Ra's top generals, and he uses the robot as a cover from which to meet with the resistance faction known as AVALANCHE. Suddenly, the manager Dio comes out to them and tells them to hide - three SOLDIERS have arrived, one of them in a black cape. At the entrance to the Gold Saucer, said man in said cape approaches the guard and pushes him aside. Dio emerges from the hallway entrance as Cloud, Aeris and Cait Sith hide. Dio addresses the man as "Sephiroth", and asks what he wants. Sephiroth says that one of their top SOLDIERS has escaped custody and Shin-Ra is willing to pay handsomely for her return. He describes Aeris, but Dio shakes his head and says he's not met anyone like that. Sephiroth scowls and accuses him of lying. Dio protests, and Sephiroth turns, telling Dio to keep an eye out for her, and leaves. Dio returns to the trio, and tells them they can stay the night, since Aeris must be tired. Cloud takes Aeris to her room, and Aeris says that Cloud's eyes glow, the same as those SOLDIERS did. Cloud nods and says he was a member of SOLDIER once, but he defected and joined AVALANCHE. Aeris asks why, and Cloud cryptically replies "long story". Aeris says that she's heard she was a SOLDIER too, so why don't her eyes glow? Cloud says "I don't know", and tells Aeris that AVALANCHE is actually hoping she'd join them. Aeris protests that she barely even remembers who she is, and Cloud tells her to think about it before leaving. That night, Aeris wakes up to see Cloud in her doorway, telling her to get dressed. She does, and rushes with Cloud to meet Cait Sith. Cait Sith says they have to hurry and leave, Sephiroth has returned. The three rush to a secret cable car down the saucer, as Sephiroth arrives at the saucer entrance. This time he simply cuts down the guards and orders his lackeys - a couple dozen Shin-Ra grunts this time - to find Aeris and search the entire place. They run off, and Sephiroth turns to see the cable car sliding down. "No!" he roars, rushing to the edge of the platform over the desert. Drawing back his hand, Sephiroth scowls and flings out a few tendrils of black energy into the air. The tendrils curl over the car and turn into a pair of dog-like animals. The car creaks under the weight, and the animals bite clean through the cables. The cable car crashes into the desert below, and Sephiroth marches into the saucer. Below, the animals are pushed back as Cloud swings out the Buster Sword, and attacks. Cait Sith cowers in the cable car as Aeris watches Cloud fight, and suddenly he is knocked down. "Cloud!" Aeris cried. Her eyes suddenly flash, and Cloud is surrounded by a golden aura. Cait Sith cries out as Cloud rises back to his feet and cleaves one of the animals in two. He turns and finishes off the other one. Aeris runs out to him as Cloud sheaths the Buster Sword. "I guess you are a SOLDIER after all" he says. Aeris asks what he means, and Cait Sith says that the Shin-Ra are the only ones with access to magic in this day and age. Cloud says they have to hurry to meet up with AVALANCHE's leader to the west, and the three take off over the desert. Far behind them, Sephiroth emerges into the desert from the emergency exit of the saucer, and finds the empty car. He curses and whips out the Masamune, slicing what's left of the car in two. Back with Cloud, Aeris and Cait Sith, the three enter the town of Gongaga, and Cloud goes to the shops to prepare for their journey. Aeris sees someone with red hair enter the bar, and Cloud tells her to back off - that's Reno, a member of the Turks, Shin-Ra's main flunkies. Avoid him. Aeris nods, and Cait Sith tells them that Shin-Ra isn't giving up the search, but whatever they're planning next has been very hush-hush. Aeris nods and goes to the shop to see Cloud stocking traveling provisions. He tells her that the mountain up ahead isn't a very friendly mountain, and advises she bring a weapon. Aeris looks around the shop and picks up a staff from a display. The owner asks if she knows how to use it, and Aeris gives it a few twirls, telling him she can manage. The group sets out to the mountain, and Cloud tells her that atop the mountain is Fort Condor, the secret base of AVALANCHE. The old mine shafts are the only way to get the mountain, making it a good spot. They climb the mountain and arrive at Fort Condor where they're taken to meet the AVALANCHE leader, Barret. Barret greets them gruffly and says that Shin-Ra is getting more oppressive lately - the rising Mako prices are putting people in a bind, since without Mako they can't do anything. The businesses can't afford to pay people well, since they're also subject to Shin-Ra taxes. Thus, one by one, the independent towns are being forced to sell out to Shin-Ra to make a living. It's time to strike back and take them down. Suddenly a sentry bursts into the fort, and to their horror, tells them that someone sold them out to Shin-Ra: they've captured Gongaga and are headed up the mountain. Barret curses and demand to know if Cait Sith sold them out, but he claims it wasn't him. Cloud tells them they have to get out of there, and asks Aeris what she wants to do. Aeris says she's still unsure of what to do, but she knows, seeing what's happening, that she just can't side with Shin-Ra. Cloud nods and tells Barret and Cait Sith to return to Nibelheim and see if they can talk to the villagers and convince them to shelter Aeris. Barret leads Aeris down a separate path as Cloud goes down a side passage. Barret assures Aeris he'll be fine, he's just going to try and by them time by delaying the Shin-Ra at Gongaga. Barret, Aeris and Cait Sith board a small boat on a secret underground river. They go off on their way, while Cloud goes to Gongaga. At Gongaga, Cloud fights off the Shin-Ra troops, and thinks he has to find a way to stall them for good. He sneaks into an underground passage under the town to find the prison cells, and releases the townsfolk that were taken hostage. They run out to the town, and Cloud goes to unlock the private cells. He approaches one and gasps. "Tifa?" the woman inside the cell looks up and cries out, climbing to her feet. Cloud asks how she got there, and Tifa says Shin-Ra had had her brought there to be executed along with a handful of other suspected AVALANCHE members. Cloud frees her, and the two slip out of the city through the underground passage. Cloud tells Tifa that AVALANCHE may have a chance now of fighting Shin-Ra, and Tifa agrees to help them do it. Back with Aeris' gang, the raft touches down at a small port where the river meets the ocean. They leave the port, and Barret says that it's too dangerous to carry on over the ocean - the town of Mideel to the south can ferry them to Nibelheim. The group proceeds south, and stop at a makeshift Shin-Ra encampment. The three hide as Reno and another man Barret identifies as Rude, step from the tent they're hiding near. Reno tells Rude that "old-man Shinra" wants the area under Shin-Ra watch 24/7. Reno nods, and a man snaps at them to place their best men on watch, he doesn't want his precious specimens harmed. A man in a lab coat emerges from the tent, and Reno tells "Hojo" that there's plenty of animals around for him to tinker with. Barret says that Shin-Ra must want the area for a testing area for animals, and Aeris protests. She gets up to attack them, but Barret pulls her back down. Hojo tells Reno and Rude he doesn't trust them to make sure his research is intact, but he has no choice as Sephiroth has already been dispatched to Nibelheim, and Hojo has been "left with the dregs". Reno rolls his eyes as Hojo shuffles away, and asks Rude what he's so on edge about. Rude gestures inside the tent, and Reno looks inside and whistles. The two leave, and Aeris tells Barret she wants to see what's in the tent. She slips inside, and Barret and Cait Sith follow. Inside is a lion-like beast sleeping in a glass tank, and Barret says that must be one of Hojo's subjects. It wakes up in the tank, and Aeris says they have to release it, it's not right to leave it here. Before Barret can stop her, Aeris lifts her staff and slams it into the control panel. It speaks and the door slides open as alarms sound. Hojo and Reno burst in, and Hojo cries out as the lion leaps on him, growling. He orders Reno to help him, and Reno looks up as Barret lifts his gun arm and Aeris holds back her staff. "Yeah right man, I'm off-duty," Reno shrugs, and Hojo screams at him. The lion backs off and thanks Barret and Aeris for freeing him. Barret is shocked by him talking, and the lion introduces itself as Nanakik, codenamed Red XIII under Hojo. Aeris introduces herself as Aeris, and Hojo cries out that she's the one that escaped. Red XIII climbs off Hojo and growls at Reno. "whatever", Reno mutters, stepping away. The four escape, and Red XIII asks if it can join them, as he has no desire to stay with Shin-Ra. Barret tells them they're heading to Nibelheim through Mideel, and Red XIII agrees to come along. The four travel south to Mideel and board a ferry to Nibelheim. ------------ Phew! More coming later, most likely! |
