So ya, after writing two really long opinions I don't think I have the strength (or time) to elaborate on this, but I just wanted to ask everyone the question: what school are you from? I mean seriously, which do you prefer, the old or new? Does it matter? And what advantages do each have? Remember that when referring to the different school's it's not just the content of the game, but they're commercial appeal and uses. I mean I don't remember seeing a resin statue of Cecil anywhere or Rydia in a Coca Cola commercial lol (or hell, maybe they were and I just wasn't paying attention). It also includes the musical score and the willingness to work with pop stars (like Koda Kumi for Ffx-2). Do you think the designs, the story, the gameplay has suffered too much during the coming years, or have they improved? And what of the attempts of Squeenix to bring back the old school in their new games (FF12) - a successful attempt, or does it just not have the same feel to it? |

Actually I prefer the new generation RPGs. Sure, Chrono Trigger, FFVI and Suikoden will always be there in my heart, but the new games seem to evolve from their pixelated roots, and I would say I like the change. FFXII didn't feel old school to me though... o.0; |

Good question nyrin. I haven't played FFXII yet so I can't answer that part of the question but I will attempt to answer the other part. I think for me I am in between I think both sides have their perks and obviously their weaknesses but honestly I like both schools. I think if people have only played just one school or the other they are really missing out. I think the old school ones have a little bit more innocence to them and I think that they also came from a time where the creators didn't try to be too over the top with the package as a whole. It is so commercialized now that sometimes I wonder if it is all for profit or is their still love for making video games out there(not that profit wasn't always a goal)...you know what I mean..meh anyway I like both a lot, you can't beat the graphics now a days, the anticipation of how SE is going to top themselves with the next FF and what the new story will be, and I still think the best game made was technically new generation(FFVII). But I love the old ones too(as stated above) and think that they both have alot to offer and fans of the series should try both. And not just FF Anti-R mentioned CT and though the point I will make differs from Anti-R Chronot Trigger was a really great game with a great story and it saddens me to think there are gamers that won't play it because of the graphics...the game play is really fun as is the case with many old RPGs..it might not be as complex of a gameplay style but it is fun nonetheless. Okay I am done now

Old School.. Well each person is goig to have a different opinion as to what exactly is Old School. Are we talk everything post-VII as new school or has the PSX FFs taken the road to Old School along with the Nintendo FFs? Other games as well... |

I'm going to assume that everything BEFORE FFVII is Old school and FFVII and above is New School. In that case, I prefer New School. I DO like Old School but I think the graphics and the music scores keep getting better (though battle systems I'm not sure about). The storylines and depth, the freedom, they're always improving (except from FFX which didn't have a free roaming world ;_;). Also, sidequests help a lot in games, and the New School FFs certainly have a lot more. |

I'm going to go with New School as well. I've never played any FF before FF7, and the only other games I played in that era was Suikoden, Xenogears, etc. And as much as I LOVE those games with all my heart, the new FFs were really what won me over, so yeah. Just the storyline, graphics and all the little extras thrown in made it so much more enjoyable. However, I don't like the way the New School is going these days though, from the era of FFX onwards. I just felt like a lot of things were limited (where's my free-roaming world map URGH!?!) and the story gets more and more cliche. FF12 and 13 don't looks appealing to me, sorry to say. -_- |

I consider "Old School" to be everything before 3D took over the video game world. Even though I love the New School age, its brought some many billiant games and fantastic series and gameplay. My vote has to go to Old School. Old School has some of my favourite games and series are in that generation and sometimes I love the simple game play. My favourite game ever is an 8 Bit game, the first Phantasy Star. There's also classic games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, the early FFs and much others that have a special place in my heart. |

When I think of old-school, I tend to think of games that came out before FFVII...games like Chrono Trigger, Lufia, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire 1, Xenogears, etc. The only improvement I've seen with new-school video games is pretty much just the graphics. Generally, I lean with old-school when it comes to storylines, characters, music, and gameplay. I want mah ability to travel on world maps back... IMO, there aren't as many new-school games that can top or even compare to the older ones in the respective areas I've mentioned above. |

I believe Xenogears came out after FFVII. I remember the part in FFVII where Cloud says "Xeno.... gias" when he was in a coma as a sort of easter egg promotion of the game. And I guess I'm going to have to say new school. I love Old-School games but alot of RPGs have risen too high to compare to the Old-School games. Games like Suikoden II, Valkyrie Profile, FFVII, Grandia II, Tales of Destiny, Star Ocean 2, and all thier sequels are games I've enjoyed far more than alot of the Old School games. Of course games like Romancing Saga 3, Bahamut Lagoon, FFVI, Lunar, and C.Trigger are going to be games that will always have a place in my heart. |

Ah, you're right actually. My head's just gettin' a bit fuzzy here... ^^; Xenogears was around 1998(I believe)...which would make it a bit just after FFVII. Guess that means I'm old-school right up to about FF9 and The Legend of Dragoon then. ![]() The majority of my favorites come from the older-school category. |

As a general rule, I prefer the old school games. The lack of graphics actually adds quite a bit of appeal to things. It pulls you in more because you're imagination is filling in the blanks. Have any two people draw a old FF character and I almost guarantee that each of them will draw the person differently. It also seems like a lot of the time the newer games feel the need to actually slow the game down from time to time just to show off how neat the graphics are supposed to be. |
