Movies, Music & Games The Influence?

Here, we'll discuss whether music, game & movies actually influence disturbing behavior and cause people to kill each other. I just can't believe that some people actually say "That game taught me how to kill" or "I saw it in the movie" or "The singer said it was ok". They shouldn't be so dumb and naive. People just try to take the heat off them and put it on artists, films and video games. I think it's just ridiculous. I get so angry when I hear about this in the news I just want to smack the person saying that. *smack* :D You are responsible for your own actions and those actions do have consequences.

Wasn't there some court case a couple years back when a kid killed someone, and the lawyers blamed it on FFVII? I don't remember the details beyond that, but if someone else could clarify, that'd be great.

I think violent media can desensitize people to blood and death. But influence enough to actually commit an act of violence themselves? I don't think so. Violence isn't born out of what you see but what you feel.

I believe the media can influence a person but only if they're easily influenced. Most people can listen to music and listen to it as a whole and enjoy it, where-as others analyse the lyrics. True, most lyrics are perfectly harmless, maybe letting out emotions or telling a story but an awful lot of rap and hip hop music recently has been about people, things you can do to people and being gangsters etc. People could be influenced by those, even if it was never intended by the aritst.

And also people have been attacked by their image, usually Marilyn Manson. He got blamed for the Columbine incident which ended up having nothing to do with him and he got blamed for a murder in Glasgow (I think) quite recently because of artwork on his website. Again, nothing came of it.

In films, yes, it's easier to get influenced. Especially in violent ones, which is why they have a high age rating. So that you're meant to be mature enough to not do what you see in the movie.

As for video games...I think some games are terrible influences, but some are falsely accused (Like FFVII if that's true). Grand Theft Auto deserves all the stick it gets, it's a horrible game considering what you can do in it.

I am still painting flowers for you.
I think the people who say "Oh, I killed him because I saw it in a movie" or "I did it because of the game" had problems before they watched that movie, or played that game. Think about it. No sane person plays a game, or watches a movie, and has an urge to kill from it. People who commit crimes like that, and blame it on the media already had mental problems to begin with.

Excellent posts everyone!
I just wanted to comment that even though I am not the biggest fan of Grand Theft Auto and some other games of that nature, if the video game has truly mature subjects in it I think it should fall to the parents, guardian, whoever is in charge of a child to make sure those type of games stay away from their children. If they are able to be truly influenced by it in a negative way then more than likely they shouldn't be playing those type of games and should not have access to them. I don't know if I can agree with the idea of not allowing for more mature games to be made since there are more than just kids playing video games.

I guess for me it would depend on who the companies who produce those games were trying to market to. If adult gamers are few and far between and therefore there is no real profit in it for them and they then turn their attention to kids well there is a problem. But then again what is the definition of a kid? I don't know if labeling by age would be fair. Everyone is different and some may be more mature than others, that is why again I realy think parents should be involved.

Meh, people who blame actions on games are just silly... i mean, aren't they smart enough to know NOT to take actions like that? D-U-H~ <_< But, i believe they do influence, but people shouldn't imitate video games. Their for our enjoyment...

If a parents lets their child play the game, then thats their fault. Their the bad parent for letting the child PLAY the friggin game...

I feel that way too aerisbolt. Most of the things you see are being sold to are people in the young age group. Besides, I dont think some parents are really NOT paying attention to what their children are either playing/watching or listening to or its either the fact that they dont care and it looks good enough to play, if this kind of thing is happening. to think that this is the only kind of thing they have in their lives......

And like you said goddess if a parent is letting a child play that game then it is their fault.

Well said, although that's most likely where the problem lies.

Most adults just plain don't care, or care to look. I know my mum was a bit taken aback by some games I was playing at my age, though she trusted me enough to know it's just a game. I'm not saying she didn't care, she just doesn't know anything about videogames

I'm not gonna put the entire blame on parents, of course not, but the whole lifestyle that the person leads could contribute to what they turn out like.

Hey, Scott. Just a curious question. Did your mom ever play videogames when she was younger? Sometimes I tend to notice that the parents who dont care about what the children play are the ones who grew out of video games (Not saying that your mom didn't care). I know I maybe wrong, but it was just a thought. (I dont think my mom cares about what I play because she trusts me too.)

Nope, she never played them and never has. I tried to get her into tham actually but she couldn't handle it. Her and technology don't mix :P

But she obviously trusts me enough to play GTA and now I won't go crazy with a chainsaw and kill random townies. Same with the music I listen to (which is rock). She doesn't have much problem with that and infact listens to some of it herself. So I guess a good parent/child relationship helps, but remember, all these people who blame videogames etc aren't always kids, so parenting might not play that large of a part.

Ouch, it bit me! I think it depends of the ratings and the person who will play or watch a movie or a game.
When I was 10, my mother let me play video games rated in "M". Of course, I don't do what people in the movies and games do. That's just....eww much?

As scott and Carmen were saying, lol my mom doesn't exctly care what i play, it just really depends... she doesn't really watch me play violent games... i mean, like horror or heavy blood. She doesn't like cursing in games i know that...

But, altogether she doesn't really care. But, my dad... well, thats a different story.

Also in some cases, the person that blames the video game is usually 15 or around 15 years old. What I have to say is that video games have rating for a reason. So what's a 15 year old playing a 17+ game? The parents shouldn't have let the kid play it and the store shouldn't have sold it to the kid if he purchased it. Some stores like WalMart card people all the time if they buy games that have a Mature rating.

I don't know... I really don't think that violent video games or movies can actually motivate someone to go out there and kill somebody. That's just ridiculous. I think it has a lot more to do with how this person grew up, how their parents treated them as a child, and if they are psychologically disturbed. I mean, after "Braveheart" no manic kid ran outside in a kilt with a sword screaming about freedom and saving Scotland from the British. Things just don't work that way. People aren't parrots. Subliminal messages don't really work, so why would seeing violence (violence the kid KNOWS is fake) actually influence them to go out there and do the same thing themselves?

I don't really disagree with you I myself don't like always associating age with every circumstance. However you use a perfect example of something I want to say. If a parent or guardian does not want the child playing a certain game because he or she isn't ready for it, in this case because of his or her age, that's a call they have the right to make.

I think many have made the point that obviously there are other factors involved besides a certian video game that would bring a child to violence. And maybe that is it all together, what kind of enviroment is the child being raised in.

From what I am gathering here and just from what I believe, if their is good "parenting" involved then a more mature game or movie is not going ot be detremental to their mind and actions. It fits into my point about the age issue, if there are parents, guardian etc. are truly involved they would know what their kid can and can't handle in most cases.

To officially finish answering the post I do not believe a game by itself can make a person commit an act, a factor, possibly but not the sole reason.
