Alright I know none of you romantics are going to care about this, but I figured i'd post it anyway. Sephiorth's sword is the masamune, named after masamune himself as one of the finest japanese sword makers in all of nihonto history. In the game you can aquire the murasame, which is a bad translation of "muramasa," masamunes rival sword maker in feudal history. Now everyone knows the reason why Cloud wields the buster sword, it was Zacks weapon and it was the only sword laying around when sephi goes after tifa, and he has to use it to stop him. Why doesnt cloud change from this sword? Possibly the merging of his memories with zacks, so he feels as if thats his personal weapon. Everyone also knows the story of masamune and murasama. In the event to test both blades for the title of the greater swordsmith, they placed them both into a river bank and lilly pads floated along the muramasa and it cut them clean in half. The same lilly pads floated across the masamune and the energy emitting from the blade forced each lilly pad to float around it leaving them unharmed. This is a myth but most give it historical credibility. The muramasa was forged as a blood thirsty evil blade since muramasa himself was sick in the head, and only wished to be the best, as the masamune was credited as being the best, and still maintain a pure of heart energy about the swords he created. So now that we are caught up; For one i think it would have been cool to see when Cloud realizes his trueself, to put down the buster and pick up the rediculously long nodachi (katana) just like sephis and duel it out. Though why, is Sephi wielding the pure of heart sword, even though we know he is the maniacal killer, and Cloud wields the blood thirsty sword, though he is usually portrayed as the protagonist? Does this go with the sephi is the purifier, and cloud is the flaw in the design theory? Any ideas welcome..and..for you angry romantics..if cloud had the 6 ft long katana..he could have stabbed sephi on the way down instead of him going through aerith and shed still be alive. there you go. definite reach. :cloud:

I've always seen it more a reflection of their characters. While Sephiroth is far crazier, he's typically more precise and elegant, while Cloud tends to be more brash and needlessly violent and showy.

Plus the idea that Cloud was just trying to be the best no matter what is the catelist for a lot of the plot of FFVII.

In the middle of dawn. Staring at the twilights.
Another interpretation could be made, based on Sephiroth's and Cloud's points of view. Sephiroth, belived he was doing justice, even if it was his very own belief. On the other side, Cloud only wanted vengeance. So if you take justice as something good, and vengeance as something bad, there might be the link.

How the heck should I know?
I agree. Sephiroth seems to be more cold, calm, and controlled, while Cloud seems to be more of a person who can gets angry, and just wants to get his revenge. Cloud also liked to be the best, as Alan Bates pointed out.
But, with the crazy issue, Sephi was obviously insane, but not in a completely crazy way, more in a... misguided way, while Cloud for most of the game is dealing with his memories and his feelings, he can be seen as sick in the head... in a literal form. *waits to be yelled at for calling Cloud sick in the head and Sephi simply misguided*

Sephiroth's weapon is one of Cloud's weapons. Even if Cloud killed Sephiroth Jenova would've brought him back, he was Jenova's chosen instrument of destruction. Another thing to consider is, how would've the Holy been released if Aeris didn't die. Even though I hate the fact that Aeris died, how would've Jenova been stopped. The WEAPONS probably couldn't have destroyed the Meteor without someone releasing the power of the Lifestream
