From AC.net: Kitase DC Interview Date: 26 Jan 2006 Posted by: vilaeth Gun Action Everyone Can Enjoy - The genre being a gun action RPG seems like something that might put off some FFVII, or pure RPG fans, and female fans who are interested in the game because Vincent is the main character. What do you feel about that aspect? Kitase: It's a simple system, you just aim and shoot, so I don't think it'll be that hard to get used to. But it might take a little practice to get the hang of using the right analog stick to aim. We've been conscious of that from the beginning, and the director Takayoshi Nakazato has been paying a lot of attention to it. But, if we added an auto-aim just because of that, it would take away some of the fun of the game. There is an auto-aim feature, but we've taken care with the balance. As well as that, there's other things to help the player through like a system where even if you get a game over you can continue with the experience points you've gained, so it's not difficult to pick up. - So you can give it another try. That sounds like a helpful system. That's quite like an RPG, levelling up to advance in the game. Kitase: Anyone can get to the end if they level up, so we brought that into the game's system. For the players who's main motivation for playing the game is to enjoy a continuation of FFVII's story, I think that's the biggest point. But for players who are confident with their skills, being forced to level up would make the battles too easy, and take the challenge out of the game. So we've made it so you can choose to get money instead of EXP, and put that towards customizing and powering up your weapons. So, it adds the possibility of challenges like finishing the game while keeping Vincent at level 1, and just powering up weapons. - The weapon customization looks quite expansive too. Kitase: I think there's a lot of discoveries people can make. Like, if you run out of handgun bullets, adding a short barrel to a rifle and using it like a handgun is surprisingly easy to handle. Finding your own unique ways to cope when you're in trouble is part of the fun. - So for people who aren't good at gun action games, should they focus on levelling up, or powering up weapons? Kitase: Well... Levelling up will increase your HP and increase the strength of your attacks, so I guess levelling up first might be best. - Alright then. Some people might not be sure about the choice of difficulty when you start the game, so do the 3 options affect things like cut scenes? Kitase: No, they won't. There's no differences like you can't see some movies in easy mode, or if you beat the game in hard mode you get something special. So people who aren't that used to games like this don't have to worry about it. But, the balance we were aiming for is the normal mode. We'd like it if people gave this mode a try first, and if it's too hard switch to easy (laughs). By the way, hard mode I think is equal to the normal mode on regular FPS (first person shooting) games. - As a fan of FPS games yourself, would you have liked to have made it more difficult? (laughs) Kitase: I want to make it something that anyone could enjoy, so I think the difficulty should be just right as it is. But I'd be happy if people got interested in FPS games because of this. There are a lot of FFVII elements scattered around, like putting magic into wide area attacks like hand grenades, and Limit Break transformations, so I think even fans will find it easy to play. - So far the only Limit Break transformation that's been revealed is the Galian Beast (note: in FFVII Vincent could transform into other forms as well)... Kitase: As you go through the story, there might be something there (laughs). That's another part that Nakazato paid attention to, but the concept of the game is using guns, so we didn't want to throw off the balance and make it so you can't win unless you transform and just beat the enemy to death. New Weapons in the Online Mode! - Has there been a lot of changes in the online mode from the beta version? Kitase: We've taken in the opinions of the beta testers, and changed some small details. After that... we decided to increase the variety of the weapons. - Ooh!? So you mean there's more types of weapons than handguns, machineguns, and rifles? Kitase: Yes. We're going to add grenade type weapons, which came up a lot from the beta testers. Whether we can get it ready in time for the games release date, or have to add it in an upgrade later will depend on how the development is going... There's also a few changes to the magic. Like Fire, which just shot in a straight line before, has been changed so it flies in a curved line, kind of seeking out a target hidden behind a wall. - What about the close quarters, hand-to-hand combat? That was powerful in the beta version. Kitase: The hand-to-hand combat wasn't really powerful. If the player gets used to using the guns well, then the enemy will be dead long before you're anywhere near them (laughs). We've take a lot of care with the basic of gun action games, aiming and shooting, while making this, so I'd like people to enjoy that part of it. But there are some occasions where because of the map you'll run into an enemy and have to fight, so you'll have to know how to use guns and close quarters fighting. We're planning to have about 20 maps ready, so people should be able to experience fighting in a variety of different situations. - Will you be able to fight against players in other countries? Kitase: At the moment, there's no plans for that. - So it'll just be Japanese-vs-Japanese first. Playing the offline and online modes is quite different, what are your thoughts about that? Kitase: Even to the people making it, we recognized they were separate things. It felt like we were making two different games at the same time. That might have been the most difficult part of making it (laughs). Both the offline and online versions were worked on by mostly the same staff, so people like the programmers would divide up their time, like "this is when I'll program the offline, and from here I'll work on the online", and worked while switching around. This is the first time our company has made a game where you can play both offline and online, together in one package. We had to feel our way around to get used to everything, so it was rough. - It must have needed a lot of research. Kitase: Yeah. But thanks to that we've got the skills to make non-RPG games, and knowledge about online games, so we've learnt a lot from the experience. Now the next gen consoles are being released and game technology is moving forward, I don't think we'd be able to avoid using a system where the action is done in real time. You have to wonder if even RPGs can just stay with commands being entered as time stands still. I think we'll be able to put the skills we've developed with this game to use on the games for the next gen consoles. Secrets of the Character Played by Gackt - Was there a reason you choose Gackt and not another artist? He's acting in as well as providing music for the game, isn't he. Kitase: It started with the production team, there was a lot of people who thought Gackt's music fitted perfectly with the game's world view. The reason he is acting in the game as well as doing music is because we had seen his other work like animation voice acting, and we had been thinking of asking if he would work something other than the music as well. When we meet him in person, we were sure that Gackt himself could show up in this world and not look out of place. There was no harm in asking, so we brought it up with him and he was happy to go along with it. - Did you have any requests for Gackt for making the music? Kitase: We just gave a simple explaination of the world view and key words for DC and FFVII, and left him to make them as he pleased. For the song that plays near end of the game, we originally requested a ballade. But the actual song ended up sounding rather intense (laughs). Gackt said that when composing music to go with DC, he ends up getting rough, intense songs. We weren't worried that it wasn't a ballade, and we were planning to match the videos to the music Gackt made from the start, so it wasn't a problem. - What were your impressions when you heard the finished track? Kitase: Pretty cool! We had made some movie footage assuming the song would be a ballade, so we were a little worried if it would fit that or not. But it matched perfectly. Besides, the FF series has already had a lot of ballades as theme songs, so having an intense song like this is a nice change, so we let Gackt know that. - Gackt's appearing in the game as a character filmed in live action, but what was your plan behind mixing live action with CG? Kitase: We thought that with Gackt, he could just blend into DC's world as he is, plus it would be an interesting experiment. The CG characters in this game are already quite realistic, so by applying CG effects to Gackt, we brought the two closer together. I think the finished visuals fit together well. - Could you tell us about the character Gackt plays, and what kind of character he is. He definitely seems like an important character. Kitase: I can't really say anything about the character before the game's released. If I were to try to explain... it's kind of difficult to express, I guess you could say "prologue." - "Prologue"...? Kitase: Well, Gackt... As a character, he has a lot of scope for expansion in the future, so this is like an prologue. Maybe people can try to guess what it might be (laughs). - It looks like this collaboration with Gackt isn't limited to just this game. Well, do you have a final message for our readers. Kitase: What I most wanted to show with this title was another side of FFVII's world... another story. The story of FFVII Advent Children focused on Cloud and Tifa, but this time it will develop around the stories of Vincent and Yuffie. With this game I wanted to shift the focus to characters who still have a lot left untold, so I hope the fans will play it. Of course, it's not only going to back up the world of FFVII, but there will be new stories for the new characters as well, so the game has got a lot of highlights. Everyone can see it right through to the ending and follow the story, and getting familiar with the gun action system as they do. I hope that people play it right to the end! I especially loved this bit: "The story of FFVII Advent Children focused on Cloud and Tifa, but this time it will develop around the stories of Vincent and Yuffie." So, for all of those CloTis who thought that "Cloud and Tifa's story" meant a CloTi love story... *Insert evil laughter* Yeah, I highly doubt "Vincent and Yuffie's story" is going to be a Yuffentine love story either. *Cackles*

My opinion... Not really a spoiler, but to those picky about wanting to wait until the game to see the relationships, don't look.

Oh, I dunno... CloTi Yuffentine fans would be estatic by this. -_- And there are many of them. I seriously doubt DoC is a Vincent and Yuffie love story though. But yay! One year later. Cloud free of "depression" that kept him from True Love Tifa, and still nothing happened. Think people will ever get the hint?

They were pretty disappointed when I saw them. All they did was badmouth Lucrecia. All Yuffentine fans get is the fact that they help each other like friends. Zomg, tru lurve.

Shelke is a child. I highly doubt Square would make romantic implications between a 12 year old and a 50+ year old man, one who spent his life loving another woman.

Yeah, I heard she was around 12... Honestly, if she was anything under 20, it would still have the same effect on me. Vincent isn't a cradle robber.

Hey, but hadn't Vincent had eternal youth? I think, that if that's correct, then age wouldn't be any problem to him. And, Who knows? In case she's 12, then he would just has to wait from 6 to 9 years, well, as long as he has eternal youth, if not, he can always live with his platonic love, hehe. |

Age doesn't only count with the body, it does with the mind too. So it wouldn't matter how old he looks. Example: 14 year old girls that naturally look 18. Just because they look older doesn't mean it's right.

Thanks for the article. I was wondering about Gackt, because many people said that they hadn't seen him in the game itself. I'm sure when I get the game I'll be able to spot him right away...being the Gackt fangirl that I am. XD |

Interesting... With what I know about the game (with spoilers and all), it seems clear that there will be a sequel... On the other hand, Suzaku, a member of AC.net forums, has found this (MAJOR SPOILERS!! ):
