Don't feel like quoting the entire post, but I agree with Kaldea but at the same time, we were all newbs once so I don't feel that we should jump down someone's throat immediately for using a tutorial exactly. We all have to start somewhere and tutorials really helped me to get familiarized with Photoshop so I can experiment better on my own. Now, if that's all they're going to do, then that's a problem but it comes with the territory. Edit: And we is it I always miss out on the good conversation here! It all happens while I'm sleeping. <_< |

Well, I think it's alright to copy a tutorial exactly IN PRIVATE--when you're doing it to familiarize oneself with a concept or tool, but to use that icon would be almost the same as taking the icon the icon maker themselves made, but instead saying, "I made it". I think tutorials can be used for good to teach a coloring concept or a different tool, but at the same time, if a tutorial is used nearly STEP-BY-STEP and than posted up as one's own icon, especially a photomanipulation tutorial like the one snm_queen made and not just a coloring tutorial. I differentiate your example with the tutorial from clampesque and the tutorial by snm_queen by several things. First of all, the tutorial at clampesque does not give direct codes and numbers, it tells you basic colors, but doesn't give you exacts. As well, you [quite obviously] used a different picture and even the sharpness/coloring is different. The tutorial by snm_queen, if you look at it, is step-by-step WITH PICTURES of EACH STEP. And she quite specifically requests you not copy the tutorial step-by-step. I personally can't use tutorials as my program is too outdated for most any of them and I don't have the filters/curves/other tools they ask for. Considering this program that I use currently is the best program I've ever had? I don't think anyone really NEEDS a tutorial to teach them. XD; |

QFT. ![]() No one EVER needs a tutorial. I just don't get why people insist on half-assing graphics. No one needs to be told what to do with Photoshop unless you are taking a formal course for it in secondary school and you're getting complete training on it. As someone who has never needed a tutorial in her life and is STILL making a living on the program, I can safely say that tutorials are just an easy way out of discovering Photoshop on your own. Besides, Photoshop is a $600+ program. If anyone is going to download it illegally, they might as well use it the way it is meant to be used and get the most out of it. It actually should be regardless of how anyone got it. Graphics aren't a way to impress people. They are a way of expressing yourself. Why would you need someone else's guidelines to express your own individuality? There is no reason for it. Individuality isn't what is popular RIGHT NOW. Anything else is just misusing the program. |

Again, I completely agree but understand that it's the few individual impressive styles that people want to copying because they want acceptance from others. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I've seen many a bandwagon parade when it comes to certain styles and when someone's work is negatively received, that's where the copying begins. Fortunately, I've had the wherewithal to not go by everything step by step but sometimes the criticism works against the maker. As unfortunate as that sounds, I see it way too often. |

But again, like CG said, this is about expressing yourself, not impressing other people. I bet you'd start a trend if you did your own thing.

I'm sure we all understand that there are some people with very impressive styles (See: Kaldea. XD), however, it's no real excuse. "Oh, someone didn't like my work." "Oh, I want my icons to be popular!" None of those are the right reasons to change your own style of icons/graphics. How do you get the unique impressive styles? By trying your own ideas out. By doing your own techniques. My work's been negatively recieved before. It's been--for lack of a better term "OWNED" by other's works in a lot of contests. Yet, I continue to make graphics. Could I start making graphics like Kaldea or corporeal on livejournal? Maybe, maybe not. Would it give me satisfaction however? Most likely not.
I think it's only courtesy to respect the tutorial maker's wishes, even if they're a hypocrite. I have yet to see snm_queen be a hypocrite in the sense that you're implying, however, so I will continue to respect her wishes as she was the one who had the courtesy to make the tutorial. |
