Hahaha what an idiot. XD That reminds me! Last night I was playing DDR at a party, when some emo kid said something about the Wii, so I stopped in the middle of my dancing, and shouted "WAIT WII WHAT?" and I went up to the kid and started shaking him. "What...did...you say! I wanna talk about the Wii! WII WII WII!" And I started chanting it. I scared all the people at that party and everyone just stared at me. AMY-CHAN....every emo kid's nightmare. =D |

She made it using the tut but it's not the exact icon, it has different text/borders.

Hur hur, I could of sworn I've seen her wearing the first icon some minutes ago. Maybe it's just me. But if you ask me, it looks like she altered this one. o: |

That brings up the topic of what constitutes "copying" an icon tutorial however~ Most tutorial makers don't mind you copying exactly as practice, but also most [especially the maker of the particular icon, from what I've seen, and understandably so] minds if you copy it onto the same material~ I personally think changing text and borders isn't enough to constitute not changing an icon, but that's my opinion~ EDIT: Wanted to also say that just changing the icon subject isn't enough either, I don't think. Icon tutorials are made to teach a technique not a look, imo. |

*Seconds* Personally, I find tutorials very close to cheating. Kinda like using tracing paper over someone else's art without them ever finding out. It's best to learn each individual tool and option in your graphics program fully by yourself. Only way to learn it for good, know exactly what you're doing, and develop a unique style for yourself. Oh, and not including brushes. |

Brushes aren't exactly the most original tool in the world, unless of course, you made them yourself out of squiggling or something. o-o; *is not a huge fan of brushes, although she finds them useful on occasion* |

They should be merely icing on the cake. They should never be more than 25% of your graphic. To find out if you have too much, try taking a look at your finished product minus the brushes. It should still look like a professional finished graphic. People overuse brushes because it's a horribly easy way to make your graphics look good with no effort. Though the effort is there if they are your own brushes.

Honestly, I think a lot of graphics these days are RUINED by their brushes. I look at a lot of graphics that pass by me everyday on livejournal communities and the brushes are just--EVERYWHERE. Stars and hearts poking into poor character's eyes. ;_; Although they are a good way to win icon contests/sig contests when the theme of the week is to make the worst icon/sig you can make possible. x3; |

-:huggle: you all- Even though I'm still learning, I did learn some basic help from others (as in asking) and spending hours on end just playing around. However, I find some tutorials really helpful like say, how to blend or crop better (and in other subjects, how to CG a drawing). How-to-make tutorials, however, I can agree with you both, but not to the fullest extent. I find it pretty okay to follow the tutorial step-by-step to practice the effects but then afterwards, it's all your own style. As for brushes, I don't find them as helpful as say some other people, but I agree that they shouldn't be totally reliable. That being said, I'm finding shapes and filters to be pretty helpful nowadays ![]() Just some advice to future graphic makers and/or new graphic makers is to spend time with your graphics, and don't rush. Oh, and resize better too xD. ...I should really stop popping into conversations that have nothing to do with me. |

Though I agree with not using tutorital step by step, it can't be helped with those who are very new to Iconing (or graphics in general), I know I used to copy step-by-step, mostly because I didn't know any of the controls of Photoshop back then. Nowadays I can fool around with tuts and not get a exact copy of them. For example, I used This Tut to make the icon I'm wearing now. |

But that icon maker didn't clearly state that he/she didn't want people to copy step by step, whereas snm_queen said not to do follow the tutorial step by step in big, readable print. ![]() You at least tried using a different image. I actually never copied a tutorial exactly, and like what CG said, I think that newbies should first take a couple of minutes to read about the tools and learn how to use them. Not copy a tutorial step by step.

Exactly DG. Newbies need to familiarize themselves first (thought I personally think it should be way more than just a few minutes ). Just jumping in, making what people give steps to do and taking all the credit for it (or "wowing" people) is just plain cheating.I spent over four years now with Photoshop and I learned all by myself with no pictures to "pretty up". It was all Photoshop. I have never used a tutorial because when I see something I'd like to learn, I learn it myself by trying MY OWN things in Photoshop. Even then I end up finding out that I could make something even better. I don't need someone to tell me what to do. I guess that's why I'm a paid graphic artist now. Bottom line is that if you want to learn Photoshop, just do it yourself. It isn't hard to experiment and play around without having to follow step by step something that a million other people already copied. I have such a huge opinion on this because I have come across many people who think following tutorials is the ONLY way to do things (and get people to give them praise) and it's sickening. People just need to learn what Photoshop is capable of doing before they start following these baby step by step tutorials. I mean, how do you learn to draw? You start off at the beginning and work your way up with basics. You don't just take the Mona Lisa, copy it and say you're a master. |

Guh, a few minutes everyday? But yeah, agree with a lot of your points, CG. But when I can't figure something out, I usually just look for that specific technique, not the style. We're not all gods when it comes to graphical art, CG.

In my experience of photoshop, I've used a tutorial once. And, that was to figure out how to make vintage.... Although, trying to figure things out on your own works. I've learned all I know about photoshop by myself, just experimenting.... I'm still not very good, but I'm trying. As for brushes, I think their very neat, and add nice touches... but, working with a pen tool/pencil brush, its a great way to get creative. ^^ |
