Devotion And Flowers; --was that a sunflower at the end?

Hey everyone. This question isn't really an AC spoiler question [that'll come later], but I was just wondering, where did the name Devotion come from? I was just wondering if someone decided to use it because it fitted Cloud and Aeris' love, or if it was somehow taken from something--in the game, maybe, or in the movie. I think Devotion as the Cleris ship name was coined before AC, but I saw something in the movie that made me think, "Eh, did they get it from there?"

Okay, the tiniest question regarding the movie:

--At the end of AC, even after the "Calling" video, were the flowers in Cloud's desk sunflowers? I'm not good at distinguishing them, but I like sunflowers [very much], so I was thinking I couldn't really be that dumb as to not know that one, can I?

Well, since I liked it so much, I decided to look for its meaning in flower meaning site and in this site [http://www.iflorist.com/en/act/meaning/#s] is says that Sunflowers, in the flower language, mean Homage and Devotion. I was wondering if someone knew about this and came up with the ship name cause of it.

Oh, and something that might or might not be interesting:

--In Greek Myth, the story about how the sunflowers were created goes like this: A girl who fell in love with the Sun-God [I forgot if it was Apollo or Helios] and everyday, she follow the chariot of the sun's progression as it blazes across the sky. She did these day by day, everyday up to nine days, I think, until she was changed into a flower.

Being that Aeris was hinted as Cloud's "light" in KH1, and being that the sun is our daily source of light [literally], I just thought it a nice coincidence that sunflowers were the flowers at his desk, as he seems to always be trying to follow Aeris whereve she goes.

'Course, there are other variations of the sunflower myth, but, eh . . . for the purpose of my shippage ways, never mind 'em.

Sunflowers are flippin' HUGE! I assure you (much to your dissapointment which I apologise for) that they are not sunflowers. Sunflowers grow tall and they have huge flowerheads, they also grow singular flowers and not bunches of flowers on one stem.

They look like a form of Ragwort, but there are many yellow flowers that can grow as dense as they do in the fields you see in AC akin to what we see in fields in Britain.

Now compare that Sunflower field to the fields you see below...

Slightly big difference, don't you think?

Don't be put off by the fact that they're a form of weed, the reason why they can overpopulate fields is because they're so resiliant to bad weather and poor soil conditions... most of the Ragwort and Dandelion species of weeds have great medicinal purposes.

My personal theory would be that because they grow in poor soil conditions, they are there to symbolise that even though the land around Midgar and the other reactors is ruined, then its obvious that once the Shin-ra stop pumping out makou that the soil can get better with time and thus, weeds such as ragwort will eventually grow.

EDIT: HAHA! I was right, it is indeed Ragwort!

the girl who becomes a prince
A life grows despite adversity. Pretty nice message, really...

And no, not really only applied to Cloud x Aerith. :P

Ahh~ There goes my happy dream.

Oh, but STILL, where DID Devotion come from?

Oh, not at all. After all, weeds are everywhere but people hardly notice them because of some reason or the other.

Like the thousand Cleris hints people tend ignore or explain away.

Thank you very much for the explantion.

And I've never actually SEEN sunflowers. If they're as huge as that, I bet they're really, really lovely. :D

I was just wondering if someone decided to use it because it fitted Cloud and Aeris' love, or if it was somehow taken from something--in the game, maybe, or in the movie. FF_Goddess thought up the name Devotion because it fitted Cloud and Aerith's love. She set up the club at the AC.net forums a good year before AC was released.

I completely agree with DH that the flowers aren't sunflowers. However, I'm not sure that they're ragwort.

Yin-chan has a Japanese friend who thought the flowers in the field were yellow daisies. She told yin-chan that yellow daisies mean "I will never forget you" in Japan. (Yin-chan posted about that months ago, but I couldn't find her post! I had to PM her to ask her about the meaning and the flower again.)

I googled yellow daisies to see if they're anything like the flowers in the field, and it looks to me like they are. There's many different types of yellow daisies, but here's some examples:

http://www.grandforksflorist.com/ftd%20sun.jpg
http://www.eyesushi.com/gallery/pages/Yell...%20mat1_jpg.htm
http://www.stanford.edu/~acotton/images/Mo...llowDaisies.jpg
http://www.pasquesi.com/images/ArgyranthemumButterfly.jpg

DH's picture of the flowers ( http://www.deviantart.com/view/23902542/ ) shows that the flowers have color variations in them. The center is a darker shade. Different types of yellow daisies can also have color variations, as you can see here: http://www.wymangallery.com/Daisies%20framed.jpg

Yellow daisies can also grow in large fields, like you can see in these pictures:
http://www.willieholdman.com/images/large/100711200611.jpg
http://www.willieholdman.com/images/large/100711200514.jpg
Those pictures of the daisy fields also look as if they're in the mountains, where the soil isn't very fertile.

So it looks like the flowers could be very well be yellow daisies. The meaning of "I'll never forget you" is also lovely, especially in the final picture where Cloud is pictured with his friends. To me, that makes the final picture seem as if it's saying that Aerith will always be part of Cloud's life, and that Aerith will always remain in his heart.

Yeah, the "I won't forget you." thing makes more sense because if the flowers are related with Cloud and Aeris they they have to be related with Cloud and Zack too, since Cloud gave some flowers to Zack.

And uh... <_< I don't feel like looking up all the meanings to all thsi stuff since I have to go soon. Talk later. Bye now.

I was refering to the scene at Zack's Buster-Sword memorial.

Cloud drops the flowers right next to the sword, if I remember correctly. It should have been in the beginning of the movie. ^^

Ah, that sword-in-the-ground scene. ^_^

Don't know if he threw flowers or not, but the flowers he 'threw' were similar to the lilies from the church, and not the flowers shown in Calling and the end scene. Don't know what lilies mean though, I think they mean 'purity' or something like that, which would suit the church setting. Hmm.... *goes to google*

Doesn't really matter though, Cloud's still a sap for flowers, and that's what's important!!! :cleris:

Goodness! We're all turning into Cleris gardeners now!!! Plant! Plant more seeds of sap!!!

*watches connection meter blink* Oh dear. *vanishes again*
