The Phone Shop; Vincent's Line

I'm in a hurry right now so I don't know if somebody else has posted the same topic/inquiry regarding Vincent's line when he arrived in the scene. Tifa and Denzel were there too. Vincent's line was "Where's the phone shop?"

What did he mean by that?

Was he looking for a phone shop because he got Cloud's mobile phone from the bottom of the lake and he wanted it to be repaired or something?

....
I think I posted this in the wrong forum? It should be in the spoiler forum, I think... O_o' Just transfer it for convenience. :cloud:

yet again, today I loved you
It's just a cute little gag. If I remember correctly, Marlene needs a phone and asks Vincent for one, but he lifts up his cape and shows that he doesn't have one. I think there's something about him being the only person who doesn't have one. So later on he gets his cellphone. xD

Before that at the Forgotten City, Cloud and Vincent were conversing when Marlene ran up to them. She wanted to talk to Tifa, but Cloud had lost his cellphone. She asked Vinny if he had a cell, and Vinny said he hadn't, and Marlene said something akin to, "How could you?"

She was saying something like, "How could you NOT have a cellphone?" because everyone has one :P so poor Vincent goes to Edge as a man with a mission: to find the phone shop! :woot:

...Pretty sure Tifa had no idea what he was talking about, though.

Actually, the version I have goes like this:

"I want to talk to Tifa!"

*Cloud looks for his phone but cannot find it, Marlene looks at Vincent,*

"Do you have it?"

*Vincent lifts his cape, to show he has no pockets. Marlene frowns,*

"I dont believe it!"

So basically Marlene is hoping that maybe Vincent picked it up when he rescued Cloud. At least, that was the impression I got of it.

My bad, that's what my subtitles say too. But the meaning behind it still stands-- Marlene can't believe that Vincent doesn't have a phone. It's something like, "I can't believe you don't have a phone! :o"

The commentary about it on the FFVII AC: Reunion FAQ went like this:

Quote:

In the Forgotten Capital when Marlene says she wants to talk to Tifa, Cloud looks for the phone he lost during the fight with Kadaj. Marlene asked Vincent if he has one, but he opens his cape to show he doesn’t. Upon seeing this Marlene says how it’s unbelievable (that someone doesn’t own a phone).

I'm not sure where they got this commentary from, but the FAQ quotes official sources such as the Advent Pieces Script Book, Prologue book etc.

:lmao: Exactly! My first set of subtitles completely omitted Vincent's line about the phone shop, so I was kinda lost at first as to what that whole part was about. Leave it to Marlene to scold the scary gothic member of AVALANCHE! :lmao:

Poor Vinny. They say he was really hurt by that, too. :( Vincent just wants to be like the rest of us~

Funny part about the rest of what the FAQ says:

Quote:

·He was really hurt by this
·When Cloud says “I’ll let you know how it goes” he makes a phone gesture (holding his hand up to his ear)
If you watch the digest included with AC, you’ll see if he buys a phone or not.

Geez, and here I thought Cloud was referring to the whole "forgiving sin" thing. He was talking about a bloody phone shop?! :thump:

I knew it had something to do with the cute scene with Vincent and Marlene, but I also had the feeling that he was (playfully?) covering up the fact that he came to fight with the others by saying he came to Midgar to buy a phone. Of course, Tifa saw right through him.

I find the whole conversation thing in the Forgotten Capital hysterical. Marlene is so cute and I applaud her for not holding back on scolding poor Vincent.

I feel bad for him though. Aww. Now I want to pinch his cheeks and cuddle him. :lmao:

I knew what Vincent meant when he said "where's the phone shop?" because of the conversation earlier. I thought he meant it as a joke though. But it's adorable that he wants to join in with the group. Awww!

Hehe, Marlene sorta reminded me of Tifa in that scene, since she opened a good hard can of verbal whoopass on Cloud and Vincent. :lmao:

Okay, prepare for ranting...the phones seem to be the way everyone communicates in AVALANCHE, and seems to be very symbolic of...well, staying in touch with friends, and with oneself. I thought the incident where Cloud's phone falls into the water and the messages replay was a neat addition. And then Aeris's voice played, which sort of backs up my idea that SE was intending to show that Cloud's constant lamenting is distancing him from his friends, and yes, even the memory of Aeris herself. Keeping so far away from everyone is letting him sink deeper into a depression, where he is completely terrified to face anyone out of pure shame (on account of the time Aeris got shishkabobbed and the Shinra pumped lead into Zack right in front of his nose). He won't even return their calls, and is probably not answering the phone on purpose.

But I think the primary thing that is keeping Cloud so under the weather is his regrets over Aeris's death, and his tendency to believe that he can't protect anyone is obviously under its influence. I think that her role in the film is to portray his state of mind among the people he loves, hence the sound of her voice when Cloud's phone drops into the water. So it all really seems to loop around with the theme of forgiveness in the midst of deep remorse, Cloud's social mentality, and the symbolism of the cell phone. He loses to the SHM (yeah, I still use that nickname :P ) in battle and completely loses sight of the only form of communication with friends he possesses. Why? Because he has reached the very pinnacle of his depression--and it begins to appear as if he cannot ever forgive himself.

I think the appearance of Vincent to whisk him away from battle shows a lot about their similarities, and he very clearly sees a lot of himself in Cloud. After all, they're both practically floored over the death of the women they loved. (FANGIRL FODDER! :woot: ) But Vincent has been dealing with tragic girl trouble for much longer than Cloud has, and seems to be going through the exact same method Cloud chose for himself--punishment, and the acceptance that sins are unforgiven. But I think that after being forced to flee from a battle, Cloud realizes that this is not the path for a fighter. Now, this doesn't mean ZOMGBAYBEEZW/TIFA!!!11 as most perceive it to be, but I think it shows that Cloud still hasn't lost his edge-- he'll never, ever stop looking for Aeris. He's not going to sit back and be like old Vinniekins and mope around, he's going to keep her with him forever, whatever it takes. Since she is such a keen representative of not only his romantic relationships, but his family and his friends, I think that keeping her in his heart is the only way he will be able to gain self-forgiveness, and ultimately to return to the AVALANCHE team and fight Kadaj and co. Does Vincent understand this? Oh yeah.

So that's why I thought his "Where's the phone shop?" line was so cute. He understands the way Cloud is feeling and wants to deal with his Lucrecia issues in the same way Cloud deals with his Aeris issues. So he picks himself up and runs off to get a phone of his own. Go back to my zany friendship symbolism theory, and it sorta connects nicely. Yay Vincent. He's all grown up. :vincent:

Ugh... the wonders of technology... Well, Vincent's practically an old guy... old people usually shun off technology. But then he has to keep up, right? ;)

Wow Luna.....very interesting points. I never thought of it in that way before.

Your version also happens to tie in nicely with DoC, which is expanding more on Vincent. Perhaps how he chooses to fight as well, like the path Cloud chose?

^_^ I like your interpretation of "Where's the phone shop."

And off-topic but.... DEAR I LOVE YOUR SIG. :lmao: :lmao: Holy Carp, I'm going to have to marry it. :lmao: Absolutely hilarious!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Hehe, that's my runner-up theory. Poor Vincent is SO last century. *pats Vincent*

And thank you, yin-chan. Those were my thoughts exactly. Nice to see that he's ready to kick some ass and take some names. Ah, the things we do for love. Posted Image

(Glad you like the sig. I <3 Japan, because they let me make fun of my own pairing. :cleris: )
