I actually used Aeris up until Kingdom Hearts came out and her name was spelled Aerith. I decided to change to using Aerith rather than Aeris as it's the more correct version, plus I think it's prettier.

I keep using both...I say Aeris but I type Aerith
It actually has a relation to the word "Air" and Cloud...well.... What moves Clouds? Not Tifa that's 4 sure XD Air!!! Aerith is what keeps Cloud going at least that's what I think ![]()

Quoted again, YATTA!! Back on topic, I believe Aerith's name is related to air, too, since that's what move clouds.
Eh, I don't mind if it's ACTUALLY a nickname for girls named Tiffany. |

They're both valid translations of 'Earisu', Aeris' name literally romanised from katakana. Different translators translated her name different ways, that's all. It appears both ways on different official merchandise, etc. It's personal preference more than correctness, as with so much in Final Fantasy VII. 'Aeris' is truer to the Japanese pronunciation, though. That wouldn't apply to 'Sephiroth', since 'Sephiroth' is actually a foreign word from Kabbalah, but with 'Aeris', since it's an original name, I prefer to stay closer to the original pronunciation (not to mention the one I know her by from Final Fantasy VII).
That doesn't surprise me; it's because in Japanese, the closest approximation to 'th' is 'su', which is pronounced more like 's'.
Mmm. I'm not so sure, since kanji represent concepts, rather than words, which is why the same kanji can mean different words. They usually circumvent that problem where there is ambiguety by putting kana over or beside the kanji to denote pronunciation. They probably just decided not to deal with that at all.
Much love. ;D |
