As you may all know, in Final Fantasy Tactics, there is a subquest involving Cloud and Aerith. Aerith is selling flowers in Zarghidas Trade City when she is attacked by knaves. Cloud defends her, tells her to run, and then he and Ramza fight off the knaves. After that, he and Ramza have this conversation:

Cloud: I lost...a very important thing...

Ramza: Cloud......?

Cloud: Ever since, I've been lost. Who am I? What should I do? What about this pain...

Ramza: Cloud...there's someone in your world waiting for you. We might be able to send you back where you came from by using the stone's power.

Cloud: Let's go, Ramza. I can't be here. Must go...to the Promised Land.

I'm curious, who do you think this person waiting for Cloud in his world is? I always thought it was Tifa...it would confirm her fears about Cloud "going far away" since he appears to have chosen to pursue the Promised Land instead of going back to his world.
But one of you(Clerith-son, I think) said that this person was actually Aerith...

Hmmm... I don't know. Cloud does repeat some of the same lines from Aerith's death scene in FFT. My webpage on the LT covers FFT:

In Final Fantasy Tactics, Cloud appears, stating he has "lost a very important thing". He also states that he is "searching for the Promised Land". This final statement is reminiscent of Cloud's statement at the end of FFVII ("......I think I'm beginning to understand. An answer from the planet... the Promised Land... I think I can meet her... there...") and proves that he is searching for Aerith in this game. He also repeats the same lines that he spoke during Aerith's death scene ("What's this? My fingers are tingling... My eyes... they're burning...") and states "I must go to that place". Aerith also appears in the game as a flower girl. Cloud stumbles across her after being summoned into that world by Ramza, who uses a HOLY stone to do so. While this incarnation of Aerith doesn't recognize Cloud, she is named "Aeris" by Knave, who kidnaps her. Cloud then shows up and rescues the flower girl, furiously telling Knave to get his hands off Aeris.

What is terribly interesting about this game is that it was already being produced before FFVII was even released. So, any claims that Aerith's appearance with Cloud in this game was mere "fanservice" are negated. When this game was being produced, there WERE no rabid CloTi fans or ClAeris fans to satisfy. They had no reason to service fans who did not yet exist. They were merely following up on the true romance in FFVII- that of Cloud and Aerith.

So... it really could by Aerith. I mean, yes, Aerith exists in the parallel universe of FFT. However, she also still exists, in one form or another, in the FFVII world. Aerith could be waiting in the Lifestream for Cloud to return and defeat Sephiroth, so she can continue her quest to take Holy to the planet.

It seems Cloud appears in the world of FFT right after Aerith's death, maybe even the very night after he lost her. So, perhaps he disappeared from that world while the others were letting him rest. It would sure explain why he spoke nearly the same words as he did when Aerith died. This would mean that he had not finished his quest, to defeat Sephiroth and free Aerith's spirit. She could be the one waiting for him to return and complete his task.

HOWEVER, Cloud also speaks of going to the Promised Land in FFT, which he did not do until the end of FFVII. So, it could be that Aerith is waiting for him in the Promised Land. After all, he did vow to meet her there. :cleris:

Bottom line: Just because Aerith is dead in the FFVII world does not mean she does not exist there. She is still kicking, even in AC. And I think she is waiting for Cloud to find a way to be with her. :fangirl:

Ah! That makes a lot of sense! Since FFT is an alternate universe, perhaps Cloud found himself there through a dream or something...and Aerith is still in the FF7 world waiting for him :cleris:

To touch the light I see in your eyes...
Good explanation, FF_G. I always thought it was Aerith simply because Cloud says that he must go to the Promised Land when Ramza says that he can be sent back. Since his intended destination should indicate who is waiting for him, then it must be Aerith.

I've always thought that Tifa's statements about Cloud going "far, far away" in FFVII were foreshadowings that he would go to the Promised Land and leave her behind, too.

If this episode in Tactics happened as Cloud is drifting in the Lifestream before arriving in Mideel, it would show that Tifa's not the one on Cloud's mind.... as the Cloti's like to claim. ;)

Since FFT is released before FFVII, before it can be labelled as simply fan service, it only reinforces the concept that Cloud is going to look for Aerith in the promised land alone, solo, not together with Tifa.

Not exactly... In Japan, FFVII was released on Jan 31, 1997 and Tactics was released on Jun 20, 1997.

In the States, FFVII was released on Aug 31, 1997 and Tactics was released on Jan 29, 1998.

So Tactics was released after FFVII. However, the release of Tactics was so soon after FFVII that - if anything - it shows that fanservice wasn't involved. Since Tactics was being developed at the same time as FFVII, FFVII hadn't developed any fandoms yet.

I agree.

I said, I belived, that person was Aerith. Sorry if I sound as if I knew it for sure, but, even if Aerith & Cloud, doesn't share the same plane of life (she's in The Promised Land, and he's in the "Planet"), that doesn't mean that they're not in the same world, remember that The Promised Land, is part of The Planet.

And, as Cloud is searching for that very important thing, he lost, that very important thing, might be waiting for him. Well, that's my point of view.

FF_Goddess you rock my world, you got the point exactly as I did.

On the subject of the FFTsubquest...

I was wondering what Ramza meant by 'It's just the day and age.' which he said right after Aerith spoke about how she wished her knight in shining would come and take her away from there [Zarghidas].
