Actually I would also like to join this club. One thing I absolutely hate is when sub elitists bash not only the person's acting but the person themselves and treat them like they're the spawn of Satan or something like that. Honestly even if they aren't good cut them some slack they're just trying to make an honest living. There are some other actor I would like to point out too Chris Patton: Sousuke (Full Metal Panic), Fakir (Princess Tutu), Greed (Fullmetal Alchemist) Kirk Thornton: Jade (Tales of the Abyss), Jin (Samurai Champloo), Antares (.hack//G.U.) Liam O' Brien: Endrance (.hack//G.U.), Lloyd Asplund (Code Geass), Red XIII/Nanaki (Advent Children) |

Hooray I have joined!! I have been currently enjoying the dubbed version of D.Gray-Man but my friend asked for the DVD box set of the first season back. Does anyone know where I can view it online in english? I've only been finding the japanese subbed thus far. |

Ugh this is another reason I like dubs. People come to conclusions like this
IT MEANS WILLPOWER FOR CRYING OUT LOUD Just because YOU don't understand it doesn't mean it should be untranslated just for you. It's not a magical word... geeze... I hope I never see this guy anywhere, on a forum or anywhere. <_< |

That one guy
|
It's one of those geek points things. "I'm a bigger fan because I watch it in the original Japanese as it was meant to be seen." Umm... no. It was meant to be scene without all that text at the bottom of the screen. Well, that and the fact that you're not actually part of the culture, so by nature some of the things they show are going to slip right by you. Now me, I like dubbs. Mainly because I hate to try and read and watch something at the same time. Also, because as far as I'm concerned, the people are speaking gibberish. I'm less likely to feel a part of what's going on if I can't understand what anybody is saying. I also have a hard time with people who talk about how the Japanese voice actors are so much better. I couldn't tell you if they are or not. I don't know if they're stressing the right words or talking with the appropriate accent or making clever vocal puns. Like I said, gibberish. Generally I can hear what the voice sounds like, but that's it. (And speaking of that, how come so many female characters all sound like elementary school students?) |

Exactly, do they think that when it airs in Japan it has awesome text and special effects everywhere? No. It was meant to be brought to you in your language. That's why dubs exist. |

Exactly. If you don't understand Japanese, then certain nuances in the way words are expressed are going to go right over your head. Reading=/=hearing, IMO. Very well said, I completely agree!

Thank you for reviving the club, Ultimavara! Those are some great ones I missed! I added them to the list for you! So... what do you all think of the VAs for FFXIII? I love the VAs for Lightning and Fang the best, but I think they are all great!

No problem. ![]() I haven't played FF13 yet, so, sadly, I haven't heard the voices yet. I usually get my games a year or two after they're released, once the price goes down a bit. But I bet the voices sound good! |

Add me in. But, I really love the work of japanese voice actors as well. I'm a strange case... I love japanese AND american voice actors but I don't really like or care for french voice actors (much... I mean, the only voice actor I know who dubbed in anime, video games, movies and TVshows is actually Sora's voice actor from KH... oh yeah, and House's french VA did Jafar from Aladdin XD... that, in itself, makes me smile... as it is almost ironic... but really, I don't have favorite french voice actors like I do in other languages). Oh, some of them are good. Strangely, they're generally better when dubbing live action TV shows/movies, as if animated stuff was not cared about as much, except if it's Disney/Dreamworks/any big production. Proof of that : video games are almost never dubbed in french, but Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 were (and the dub was actually good *not like Metal Gear Solid 1... oh man, yes it was dubbed in french, but THAT was horrible, so horrible that the game was actually pretty funny, it is really THAT bad, search for it on Youtube if you like*, with most of the original french voice actors coming back for their characters). Why ? Mostly DISNEY's influence. FF games are always in english with french subtitles, like the majority of games, and same with KH games on DS/PSP (maybe because they're not big games and they don't want to bother... imagine the feeling... KH1/2 are in french... you want to play the other games because you like KH and suddenly BAM... english voices... lame)... In a way, it's good because french people can learn english by playing video games XD... on the other hand, it's not fair to not offer us a french dubbed version, as if dubbing video games wasn't worth it. Only recently, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon I think were voiced in french, and we could choose the language, but as I said, it's a rarity. Sometimes even, games aren't even translated in french AT ALL... such as the latest Ace Attorney game (with Edgeworth in it)... I don't like the french translation as the jokes/references are poor and very rare (english Ace attorney puns/references rock and are almost the reason why I bought, played and loved the games *I was quite disappointed with Trials and Tribulations as the english version wasn't in it, contrary to the first 2 games*)... but it was downright disrespectful to not include it for those who don't read/speak english. Coming back to voice acting in general. I still feel like english and japanese dub are generally greater than french dub. English voice actors that I like : - Steve Blum (Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, Vincent Valentine, Auron *yes, it was him*, Khimari*yes, him too I think XD*, Darcia from Wolf's Rain, Canaan from Xenosaga 3...) - Crispin Freeman (Albedo from Xenosaga *I knew him thanks to Xenosaga, and what a great start for me, he rocked as crazy Albedo... and as Gaignun too, he voiced him too*, Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya, Tsume from Wolf's Rain... and yeah Alucard from Hellsing but I never watched Hellsing) - Travis Willingham (Roy Mustang from FMA, I love his deep voice... if I'm being honest, I really, really like the english cast of Mustang's team so... I just had to make it simple and pick my favorite VA out of the bunch) - Vic Mignogna (Edward Elric from FMA, Tamaki Suoh from Ouran, Junpei from Persona 3...) - Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Motoko Kusanagi from Gits, Julia from Cowboy Bebop, Doctus from Xenosaga *a cyborg, and funny thing, the guy who voiced Batou in Gits also voiced Ziggy, another cyborg and one of the main characters... they voiced cyborgs again in the same game XD*... and also, she's a great singer and sang most of Silent Hill songs... she's epic) - Melissa Fahn (Edward from Cowboy Bebop and Tachikoma from Gits... here's the proof that you can sound cute without being annoying... something Edward's french voice actress failed at *thank god, the rest of the characters are actually good in french, but it can't compete with the english VA... and as good as the japanese VA is, it can't compete either) - David Hayter (Solid Snake/Big Boss... oh come on, the guy is a legend, MGS japanese cast is not really well known anyway... the american really got all the fans...they deserve it, they're frankly awesome and I think they have a special bond with the characters they voice, really) - Quinton Flynn (Raiden from MGS, Axel from KH2... well, I'm not really fond of Raiden or Axel, but Quinton Flynn is awesome... and he seems to be quite a funny guy too) - Johnny Yong Bosch (only recently, he has a really charming voice, so yeah he did Kiba from Wolf's Rain and Itsuki Koizumi from Haruhi Suzumiya) - Vivianna Bateman (apparently, she's Koudelka's voice actress from the game Koudelka, prequel of Shadow Hearts... the acting was fantastic in this game, but REALLY, the characters felt so REAL both thanks to the amazing voice acting and animation... and Koudelka's voice was lovely and so charismatic) - Kari Wahlgren (Karin from SH2, Ashe from FF12, Cher from Wolf's Rain... I'm not a big huge fan of her voice... as it can be annoying sometimes, especially when she voices young girls... but she gives life to her characters perfectly) - Wendy Lee (Haruhi from Haruhi Suzumiya, Megara from Hercules, Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop, Lin from Spirited Away... yes, she's good... but just like Wahlgren, her voice can be annoying when voicing younger girls... such as Haruhi, seriously... she's a wonderful Faye however) - Caitlin Glass (Winry Rockbell from FMA and Haruhi from Ouran... I like her Haruhi voice more personally... deeper, less whiny... good voice actress) - Keith Ferguson (Marluxia from KH2, Basch from FF12... but I really loved him in Lost Odyssey as Kaim Argonar... his scream during that flashback involving his daughter, it felt so raw, so real... I was shocked, almost upset... this alone made me like the voice actor) - Heather Morris (Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3 and Eilleen from Silent Hill 4... she's damn good but her best role was Heather without a doubt... and she's in the musical comedy Glee apparently too... good to know if you like the series) - Donna Burke (Angela from Silent Hill 2 and Claudia from Silent Hill 3... different roles... but amazing performance) - Alessandro Juliani (L from Death Note... I think he was the best voice actor for L... he's an actor too and you probably know his face if you watched Battlestar Galactica... or Stargate SG-1 *but he only played 2 minor characters in it, not much to get excited about, however in Battlestar, he's Felix Gaeta*... he voiced a prince in one Barbie movie too... yes, that's... different XD). - Brian Bloom (because I had to mention this actor who voiced Alex Shepherd from Silent Hill Homecoming... probably the most credible voice actor in the whole series, maybe because he's more of an actor than only a voice actor) - Bridget Hoffman (KOS-MOS from Xenosaga... I really loved how she voiced KOS-MOS... she's also Belldandy from Ah My Goddess... apparently) - Chris Sarandon (Jack Skellington from NBC and Kurotowa from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind... yeah I know, he's an actor too... but what a charming voice he has...) - Vincent Price (he's just the best narrator of all time *one of my old english teachers would agree on this*... Remember the beginning of Beauty and the Beast ?) I have favorite japanese voice actors too such as : - Tomozaku Seki (Van Fanel/Escaflowne, Kyo Sohma/Fruits Basket, Bart Fatima/Xenogears, Virgil/Xenosaga, Sousuke Sagara/Full Metal Panic, Chiaki Shin’ichi/Nodame Cantabile, Nobu/NANA... and others... he's kinda the King of seiyuus to me) - Miyano Mamoru (Kiba from Wolf's Rain, Tamaki from Ouran, Light from Death Note, Ling from FMA, Riku from KH... aka the Prince of seiyuus XD) - Maaya Sakamoto (I don't need to make a list there, but she's Aerith and she's one of the only ones doing her justice *Aerith's french voice is actually good*) - Romi Paku (Nana Osaki from NANA, Zidane from FFDissidia, Edward Elric from FMA, Fran from FF12 too but I'm not sure) - Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya, Ikkyû-san from Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei... I think he's hilarious, I just feel it in his voice) - Aya Irano (Haruhi Suzumiya, Konata Izumi from Lucky Star and Misa Amane from Death Note... actually, I don't like her Haruhi and Misa voices too much... but Konata is pure gold IMO) - Hiroshi Kamiya (Nozomu Itoshiki from Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei... I love the teacher... and this series... somehow, it reminds me of shows like the Simpsons or Family Guy *the family being a class of teenagers here* because it's random/funny/crazy and of course, it's satirical). - Megumi Hayashibara (Rei Ayanami from Evangelion and Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop... I think she's Lina Inverse from Slayers too). Some anime/games/movies that I like a lot in english : - FMA : I just feel it's good and natural to watch it in english and I got attached to the voice acting (yes, even if Vic Mignogna sounds a bit old for Edward, he's Edward for a lot of people and I don't think that will change... however, Alphonse's voice is different now, he sounds like a girl sometimes... but really, it's hard to forget Aaron Dismuke's interpretation). - MGS : They just fit their characters. All of them. - Dragon Quest 8 : There is no other dub for this game anyway... but it's really enjoyable, really well done. There are a lot of different dubbers involved. I even spotted french people (badly) speaking english XD. Funny stuff. - FF12 : one of the best video game dubbing ever. - Azumanga Daioh : I loved the japanese version first, and I was afraid about the english version. But in the end, it's quite enjoyable. Japanese is still better for some characters... such as Chiyo... so much cuter. - Cowboy Bebop : English belongs to Bebop. Period. And other than that, it's good voice acting, seriously. - Ghost in the Shell : same as Cowboy Bebop. - Bacanno : Again, same thing. - Princess Mononoke : I loved the voice acting. And Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully from X-Files) was in it. Cool. - Spirited Away : I really loved the voice acting. I don't remember watching it much in japanese. - Professor Layton series : Luke and Layton have perfect british voices. - Xenosaga : 1 and 3... 2 was meh... but with a few good new voices like chaos and Febronia... MOMO's new voice was horrible but she improved in Episode 3. - Shadow Hearts : Yuri is good yeah, but he can't scream XD. Other than that, the voice really fits the character. Also, Alice's voice was more charming in SH1, but the new voice wasn't bad. Karin was great. I liked Saki and Kurando's voices too. - Koudelka - Escaflowne : yes, it is good, not as good as the japanese version but still very good. - Wolf's Rain : I just feel it better in english. However, the japanese isn't bad at all. - Haruhi Suzumiya : I kinda prefer the majority of the characters in english... but japanese Kyon is very cool (as much as Crispin Freeman finally, they're both good Kyon). - Ouran : I have a thing for the japanese dub... but english dub was so good that I enjoy both (even the mangaka said that Vic Mignogna is kinda better as Tamaki than Miyano Mamoru... I like them both, really). - Persona 3 : It's very good. Japanese is good too but I feel it better in english... weird since the characters live in Japan and all. - Lost Odyssey : One of the best english voice acting in video games. The french dub doesn't seem bad either. - Arjuna : Good in japanese, good in english. - Samourai Shamploo : Pretty good in french and japanese. I'm sure the english dub is really good but I didn't watched it. - Kingdom Hearts : Say thank you to Disney, Square, because they're responsible for the golden english casting. - Valkyrie Profile : mostly 1, because of Lenneth awesome voice, but I can't say it had awesome voice acting as a whole, but it had its charms. - Baten Kaitos : I can't say for sure since I didn't play much of it, but the dub was okay... and... I don't know... this game feels special to me and the voice acting has something to do with it. Now the ones I like in japanese : - Fruits Basket : because the voices just fit the characters, I didn't like the english or french versions. - Ouran : as much as the english one actually. - Haruhi Suzumiya : just for Kyon, seriously. - FMA:Brotherhood : because I watched it when there was no english dub. It's a good thing that I watched the first series in english only because some character's voices changed... more than in english, which is quite unusual. And well, I have a hard time adjusting to massive change of voice actors (it happened with the french cast of the sitcom Friends, 3 main voice actors left... and I felt like watching 3 new characters). - Escaflowne : Escaflowne french VA is horrible with a lot of nonsense... english and japanese are better. - Xenogears : not voiced much actually, but when it is, there are ton of reasons to prefer the japanese dub. Yeah the english voices are kinda awful, Bart having the weirdest voice of all. It doesn't suit him at all. - Evangelion : english is meh, french is the worst (OMG, Asuka is awful), the japanese cast is really better. - Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei : I don't think the english dub exist yet, or maybe I missed it. - Xenosaga : because the japanese cast was good and they almost always worked with the same voice actors. - Laputa (Castle in the Sky) : french VA was very good, japanese was very good too... but I don't know what happened with the english VA. The 2 kids sounded like adults, not kids. - Howl's Moving Castle : I just think the english VA never interested me... so I watched in japanese. However, this movie is better in french and I watched it more in french than in any other language. - Azumanga Daioh : I watched it first in japanese... and loved it. - Advent Children : As a whole, the japanese voice acting was much better and each character got a fitting voice. However, I wasn't crazy about Cloud's voice... I was much more charmed by Vincent's sad voice (Steve blum was a good english VA for Vincent too, so this character got lucky... except maybe in french *why did he have to say "Djenovah" or "Geostigmate"*) and by Sakamoto voicing Aerith. I have mixed feelings about FF10. Don't hit me, but Tidus's japanese voice feels more natural... Not that Taylor did completely bad, but his laughs and yells really hurt my ears... I think he did better as Shuyin. Seymour sounded lame, but again, the whole character is a pain in the butt without any charisma and with bad tastes in clothings. But then, there was Auron (Blum) who was fantastic, and Taylor, as I said, wasn't all bad (the horrible laughing sequence and Yuna's VA bad crying moment aside, I think the Yuna/Tidus moments are well played). I didn't like Wakka's voice much at first, but I think it suits him finally (and his voice actor did Bender from Futurama, funny). And as for the "Arigato" VS "I love you."... I think that Yuna saying thank you is as meaningful if not more than just saying "I love you". The dub team just wanted Yuna's last words to Tidus to be more direct than subtle for the western players... I mean, I talked to people who even whined about how Yuna/Tidus didn't kiss every five minutes from the Macalania scene until the end of the game... Personally, I think their relationship was well played... the very beginning was very forced, sure (I mean Wakka's comments... "She's cute, right ?", as subtle as a truck XD...)... but as a whole, it was more natural (personal opinion). But really, bad voice acting... I think Metal Gear Solid french VA and Magna Carta:Tears of Blood english VA are really bad... And I guess Silent Hill wasn't always good... the series are well known for their very calm heroes who ask stupid questions... but James, Henry and Harry's voice actors don't help at all (I still like James VA for some reasons). Rule of Rose had also a strange voice acting. I have mixed feelings about Death Note too... there was good and bad in everything... french, english, japanese. L was better in french/english, Light was better in japanese and Misa... all insufferable. OMG... so long O_o. Sorry, I tend to do that sometimes. |

Welcome, Beatrix! Well, I can't say I've heard any French VA's. I wouldn't know what they were saying anyways! Actually, Auron was voiced by Matt McKenzie and Kimahri was voiced by John DiMaggio, who also did Wakka. |

Maybe you're right about Auron. But I really thought it was Blum... for years. Oh man. The man still did a wonderful job. Edit : And... oh boy... he actually played in a lot of well known TV shows. |
