Honestly, I didn't even think about it as being a possibility. But then maybe I'm just completely naive.

No no, I didn't think of it either. These theories about Dumbledore are totally new to me, shows you how out of touch I am with that fandom. XD; I also saw him as just the mentor, but like Harry I suppose, I forgot he had a life outside Hogwarts.

Then again I sorta sleepwalked through book seven so maybe that's why I didn't notice.

:lmao:

Well that's a relief. ^_^ So I'm not totally the only one who was shocked by this. Yeah, I've kinda stayed out of the fandom too since HBP came out- the HP fans just get too scary for me to deal with.

I think the problem was not that I never considered him having a life outside Hogwarts, but rather that I just figured if anything was important, JKR would tell us. I rather liked that so much of him and his past was a mystery. That's why I was kinda frustrated that much of book 7 has all this stuff thrown at us. I think it would have been better to space some of it out through the others, but meh, oh well. (I was excited though that his mother shares my name!!! :fangirl: )I feel she almost humanized him too much, you know? *shrugs* I haven't been too pleased with JKR lately though. *sigh*

*SPOILARZ FOR THE BIG NEWS*

I'm still not sure how I feel about this, to be honest. On the one hand I'm happy that we have such a strong, gay character and it's never made a big deal that he's gay in the books. It's just there if you want it to be, it adds a bit of depth to him but I rather like that it wasn't made official until now because I think many people would have simply been distracted by the fact that he was gay and other aspects of his character would have been pushed aside.

JKR also mentioned something like she got enough heat for the books dealing with witchcraft, and exposing Dumbledore as a gay character would have just given more reason for people to hate.

Although I am kind of glad it's Dumbledore and not Draco, Sirius, or any other usual suspect. Then it's just be "ZOMGYAOIYAY". I mean, it still will be, but because Dumbledore's older and not bishie, it's easier to avoid.

Just my thoughts. ^^

OH YES I SECOND THIS FEELING ALTOGETHER

Seriously, I feel the same way. I'm SO SO SO glad it wasn't some HAWT character, it makes things more believable. ^_^

DivineRose, welcome!! I'll add you to the list. :huggle:

And Zelda, I'm just gonna add you to the member list even though you didn't ask. You've posted more than once, you can NEVER ESCAPE. :tard:

I just showed the news to my mom, and she was just sort of like, "Okay then..."

And neither of us are sure who Grindelwald is again. *forgetful*

I wonder if my cousin knows this. She probably does; she goes on MuggleNet a lot. We have got to fangirl about this. xD

Grindelwald is the Dark Wizard that Dumbledore defeated. It's on his chocolate frog card, and more about him is in book 7, but I shall not say more for fear of spoilerz! ^_^

Smart move, I feel. I wonder how many schools would've been willing to use HP in their classrooms if this news came out earlier. It's sad that something like this might be enough to change people's minds about a character, but I can easily see the book being taken off the teaching list has this been known earlier.

Truthfully, I never thought about that aspect of his life, either. There's just some things that don't occur to you with the Old Mentor-type characters (exactly what someone said about teachers having no lives XD), but knowing it now will just make me watch the movies with new eyes.

(Oh man, look at the attempted, non-spoilery ambiguity... Can we call this The Spoiler That Shall Not Be Named? )

hee, same here! Actually, I think it came up because someone in the movies wanted to mention a girl Dumbledore had a crush on and JKR was all, "Yeah, about that..."

I wonder if they'll include subtle hints towards this in the 7th movie, now. Hrrrm.

But yeah, with mentor types (especially old ones) it's just like, you once had a sex drive WHAT NOW?

SPOILER?

.....I just have to say:

WHY?!

I just CAN'T picture Dumbledore like that, I dont know why! Maybe it's because he's old. Maybe it's because he's the highly respected dodgery old coot that I grew to love as I was growing up with the books. *sigh*

But I am SO glad it wasn't Draco, or Sirius, or even SNAPE...can you imagine? Holy Moses...

I did almost hit the floor when I heard the news. Nothing wrong with gay people. I'm just not into yaoi, and I cringe when I think of all the nasty fanfiction/signatures/avatars that are going to crop up now, especially with the thought of the final movie coming out. They'll probably have Grindelwald in it...and then.....the graphics...*sob*

You voiced my feelings completley Amathala!

I don't have anything against gay people either, but I can't stand all the yaoi stuff. I just don't see the appeal of it. And I agree, I truly shudder to think of all the stuff that's going to pop up because of this. I thing I really am going to stay out of the graphic and fanfiction from now on.

:( There's some things that are just better left unsaid, and I think this is one of them. To think of Dumbledore in that way is just odd. Like you said, he's always been the brilliant, eccentric, elderly loon! It's just sad to me. :( And this might sound ridiculous, but I always thought that he and McGongle would have been cute together. So much for that now.

No, I liked McGonagall and Dumbledore together too, Alantie. ^_^

My newspaper had the story about the spoiler in it today, and it said that JKR had been reading over a script for the sixth movie, and at the point where it had Dumbledore remembering past loves and stuff like that, she crossed it out and wrote "Dumbledore is gay" over it.

Wait, do we really have to mark this as a spoiler? It's exploded all over the internet and JKR has made public statements about it, so it's not a secret in the slightest. Just wondering.

Personally, the only time I have a problem with yaoi is when it's just gay for the sake of gay. Like, character A and B are hawt, let's have them bang and be totally OOC for no reason at all.

However, in Dumbledore's case, I don't think it's OOC, and it's certainly not just for the sake of the hawtgheysexxorz. I don't feel his sexuality really makes any sort of dent in his characterization. He's still the same old coot we've always loved - now we just know a little bit more about him.

WHAT THE PHUCK?!!!! :ermm:

NOTHING wrong with gay people, all right? Some of the people I love best in the world are gay! Heck, I ship little bit of Sirius/Remus, and Oliver/Percy(yuh, what? It's cute!) in the HP fandom! But Dumbledore=Gay...DUMBLEDORE, GAY?!

*is still trying to sort her addled brain out*
